Chapter 3

The recovery house sat on the edge of neutral territory—a two-story structure that smelled like old wood and medicinal herbs. The kind of place where wolves went when they couldn't go home. I'd been here four days. Long enough for the bruises from the warehouse to fade to yellow-green. Long enough for the pup to settle back into a steady rhythm beneath my ribs. Long enough to start building.

I spread the papers across the narrow desk in my room. Supply chain manifests. Warrior rotation schedules. Allied pack debt arrangements. Financial dependencies. Three years of intimate knowledge, compiled from memory and cross-referenced against every scrap of documentation I'd kept from my time as Anthony's protégée and Emmett's Luna.

I'd always been good at details. It was why Anthony had valued me—before he'd tried to kill me. I remembered every contract he'd ever shown me, every territorial negotiation, every quiet conversation about which packs owed Silverfang favors and which ones were one bad harvest away from collapse. He'd taught me to see the architecture beneath pack politics. The invisible scaffolding of debt and obligation that held territories together.

Now I was going to use that architecture to bring his down.

I opened the Council codex. The leather binding cracked softly. Inside the front cover, pressed flat against the first page, was the honeysuckle flower Caleb had given me on my first day in Ironvale. Pale purple. Dried to paper-thin fragility. I didn't look at it long. I couldn't afford to feel anything about it yet.

I flipped to Section VII: Territorial Stewardship in Cases of Alpha Incapacitation.

*When an Alpha is rendered unable to fulfill the duties of leadership due to injury, illness, or other permanent impairment, the Lycan Council may appoint an interim steward to maintain territorial stability. Priority is given to candidates with demonstrated knowledge of pack operations and the confidence of the warrior class.*

I read it three times. Memorized the exact wording. Anthony was crippled and blind. He couldn't patrol borders, couldn't lead warriors, couldn't even see the wolves he was supposed to command. By the letter of Council law, he was incapacitated.

And I knew Silverfang's operations better than anyone except Anthony himself.

I moved to Section XII: Evidentiary Standards for Bloodline Fraud.

*Claims of fraudulent bloodline assertion require corroborating testimony from multiple independent sources, physical evidence of intent, and biological verification through scent analysis conducted by a Council-sanctioned Lycan elder.*

The mute rogue's testimony would be one source. The contract instructions he'd kept—Anthony's scent still on them—would be physical evidence. And the Lycan King himself could conduct the scent analysis. I'd seen the way he'd inhaled at the banquet, the way his eyes had gone sharp and certain. He knew what I was.

I turned to Section XIX: Permanent Wolf Severance.

*The ritual of permanent wolf severance may be invoked by the Lycan Council as penalty for crimes against the sacred bonds of pack and mate. The severance is irreversible and results in the permanent dormancy of the individual's inner wolf.*

I traced the words with my finger. Permanent. Irreversible. Dormancy.

Not death. Something worse. A wolf without a wolf. Human in a world that measured worth by what you could shift into.

My wolf stirred beneath my ribs. That low ancient voice, satisfied.

*"Yes."*

I closed the codex. Pressed my palm flat against the cover. The honeysuckle flower shifted slightly inside, a whisper of dried petals.

Then I reached for the blank parchment and started drafting my Council petition.

---

The border trade healer arrived at dusk. Her name was Mira—a neutral-pack wolf who ran a small clinic on unclaimed land and owed me a favor from two years ago when I'd helped her negotiate a supply contract with Ironvale's herbalist. She didn't ask questions. Just handed me the sealed envelope and waited.

I opened it carefully. Inside was a single sheet of paper covered in precise, blocky handwriting. Sign language transcribed into written English by someone who knew both fluently.

*Alive. Hiding in eastern rogue territory. Still have everything: contract with Alpha's scent, payment records, warehouse map with wolfsbane damage documented. Why contact me now?*

I pulled out a fresh sheet and wrote my response in the same transcription format, visualizing the signs as I wrote.

*I'm petitioning the Lycan Council. I need your testimony. Not as a criminal. As a recognized witness. Professional interpreter. Delivered with dignity. Your voice will be heard. Your account will matter.*

I paused. Then added:

*I can't promise you safety I don't have yet. But I can promise you this: the man who hired you to kill me will answer for it. And you'll be the one who makes him answer.*

I sealed it. Handed it to Mira. She tucked it into her coat without reading it.

"How long?" I asked.

"Three days to reach him. Three days back. Maybe a week total."

I nodded. A week. I could work with that.

Mira hesitated at the door. "Gwen—be careful. Anthony's people are watching the neutral zones. If they find out you're organizing something—"

"They won't," I said. "Not until it's too late."

She left. I stood at the window and watched her disappear into the tree line.

My wolf's voice hummed low. *"The rogue will come."*

I pressed my thumb against the dead mark on my neck. The habit was automatic now. A reminder of the exact shape of what had been taken.

"I know," I whispered.

---

The intercepted communication arrived the next morning. A courier I'd paid with the last of my Luna savings—a young Delta from a border pack who didn't ask why I wanted copies of regional Alpha correspondence.

I spread the pages across the desk. Read them once. Twice. Then a third time, my jaw tightening with each pass.

Anthony's cover narrative. Polished. Sympathetic. Structurally perfect.

*Ambushed during routine border patrol. Rogue faction. Silverfang's territorial enemies. Pack solidarity needed.*

No mention of me. No mention of the warehouse. No mention of the pregnant Luna he'd ordered murdered.

Sympathetic Alphas had already responded. Condolences. Pledges of support. Offers of warriors and resources.

I recognized the architecture immediately. It was the same structure Anthony had used to suppress every inconvenient truth during my years as his protégée. Redirect attention. Frame the narrative. Make yourself the victim before anyone can make you the villain.

He was good. He'd always been good.

But I'd learned from him.

I pulled out my timeline. The Council petition was scheduled for three weeks from now. I crossed it out. Wrote a new date.

Two weeks.

My wolf growled softly. Not a warning. Approval.

I reached for the codex again. Flipped to the section on expedited Council hearings. Read the requirements. Drafted the formal request.

When I was done, I pressed the honeysuckle flower flat against the page one more time. Felt its fragile weight.

Then I sealed the petition and prepared to burn Anthony's world down faster than he could rebuild it.
