Chapter 1

"I'm sorry for your loss, Donna," the doctor's voice broke through the fog in my mind.

I could not make sense of the words at first. But as the truth sank in, the weight of it crushed me like a hand pressing down on my sternum until I could not draw air.

I was four weeks pregnant, and at that moment, I had lost the baby. All because of the ambush that came just before dawn, an unsanctioned hit that ripped through the Bellandi compound while half the Family slept.

Yet, even as I bled helplessly on the ground, my husband, Dante, the Don of the Bellandi Family, was nowhere to be found. He was too busy saving Alessia, the daughter of a slain Bellandi capo, the woman who had been his shadow since childhood, the one who always seemed to be at his side when his own wife needed him most.

When they finally found me, broken and barely breathing in the gravel beside the east entrance of the estate, Dante did not drop to his knees. He did not press his hands over mine or call my name. He turned Alessia away, his palm cupping the back of her head the way a man shields something precious from ruin.

"Don't look, Alessia," he said, his voice soft and protective, pitched low enough to be intimate. "It is too terrible. You will have nightmares if you remember it."

Nightmares. The word echoed through the corridor of my shock like a bullet ricocheting off marble. It was as though he had forgotten I was the one living the nightmare, losing our baby, my blood staining the flagstone, and my heart breaking all at once. The soldiers standing behind him would not meet my eyes. Two of them had crossed themselves. None of them moved until Dante gave the order, and even then his voice carried no urgency, only the calm authority of a man whose priorities had already been arranged.

His concern was not for me, his own wife, but for her.

……

As I lay there, the taste of iron flooding my mouth and the December cold seeping through my torn clothes, I realized that the marriage I had cherished was nothing more than a cruel illusion. Every Sunday dinner where he sat me at the head of his table, every time he introduced me as "my wife" to visiting capos with that proprietary hand at the small of my back, every public kiss pressed to my temple for the benefit of the Family, it was theater. His loyalty had always belonged to someone else, and I had simply been too desperate, too proud, too deep inside the machinery of omertà and obligation to see it clearly.

After the doctor patched me up in the private clinic on the compound's lower floor, the one that smelled of antiseptic and old stone and the faint copper of other men's wounds, I stumbled out into the corridor and my decision became crystal clear. I had to leave. Leave him, leave the Family, leave everything behind that had been slowly poisoning my spirit. The fluorescent light above the exit buzzed and flickered. One of the younger soldiers stationed at the door straightened when he saw me, his hand twitching toward his holster out of reflex before he recognized the Donna's face. He started to speak, probably to offer an escort, but I walked past him as if he were furniture.

I directly dialed a number I had tucked away in the back of my mind for moments just like that. It rang once, twice, before I heard the familiar voice, unhurried, certain, the voice of a man who never asked a question he did not already know the answer to.

"Hello, Don Matteo." My voice was steady, even though everything inside me was trembling. My thumb rubbed the pale mark where my wedding ring used to sit, a ghost of gold against skin that had already started to forget the weight of it. "I have thought about your offer, and I have decided to transfer back to Moretti territory under your Family's protection."

There was a brief pause. I could hear, distantly, the low murmur of men in a room behind him, the clink of glass, someone laughing once and then going silent as if reminded the Don was on the phone. When he spoke again, I heard the smile in his voice, warm but controlled, the smile of a man who understood exactly what this call cost me. "That's wonderful news, Bianca."

The relief that washed over me was bittersweet, but it was the only choice I had left. I pressed the phone against my cheek and closed my eyes, and for one suspended moment the world was only his voice and the cold night air and the sound of my own breathing, ragged but alive.

But later, as I arrived at the edge of Moretti territory, the checkpoint where two of Matteo's soldiers waited beside a black sedan with its headlights cutting the dark, Dante caught up with me. His own car screeched to a halt twenty yards behind mine, and he stepped out into the spill of light with his face twisted in desperation, his overcoat open, his collar undone. I had never seen him look so undone. He looked, for the first time in our marriage, like a man who understood he was losing something and did not know the protocol for getting it back.

"Bianca, please," he begged, his voice filled with a rare vulnerability that might have shattered me a day earlier. "Come back to the Bellandi estate. We can fix this. I can fix this."

I looked at him, the man I once loved more than anything, the Don whose name I had taken, whose ring I had worn, whose world I had entered with both eyes open and a foolish, willing heart. Behind him, his driver stood with a hand inside his jacket, eyes on Matteo's soldiers. Behind me, the Moretti men waited without expression, their patience a kind of message in itself: she is already under our protection; what happens next is your problem.

And I knew there was no going back.

"No way," I yelled, the fire of my pain rising in my chest so hot I thought it would char me from the inside. "You made your choice, Dante. And now, I am making mine."

His hand moved. I saw his thumb drag slowly over the face of his signet ring, that old Bellandi crest, and I understood the gesture for what it was. He had stopped thinking about love. He was thinking about possession. About territory. About the insult of a Donna walking across a rival Family's borderline in full view of soldiers who would talk.

I turned my back on him and walked toward the waiting sedan, and I did not look over my shoulder, not once, not even when I heard him say my name again, quieter this time, the way you say a word when you are trying to memorize the sound of it before it is gone.
