Chapter 2

Luke and I were classmates in college. He was the most handsome boy in the class. He pursued Nancy for four years, and I also pursued him for four years.

When he was rejected by Nancy, he would always come to me for comfort. I thought he would be moved by my sincerity eventually.

The fact was just like that, he accepted me after graduation.

We got married not long after, but he never posted anything about us on social media.

He said he didn't like to be too high-profile.

"Marriage is a very private thing. As long as we are happy, that's enough. What do you think?"

"Okay, whatever you say." I agreed.

There was a high overlap rate among our circle of friends. I suppressed my joy and kept this happiness to myself for him.

Our life after marriage was lukewarm. I came home from work every day to do the laundry, cook and do other housework, and he never had to worry about the household.

He could focus on his career. He was promoted from an unknown salesperson to deputy manager in just one and a half years.

But when there was an internal competition for the marketing manager position, he resigned.

Because Nancy came back from abroad.

I didn't know how Nancy persuaded him to resign.

All I knew was that after I found out I was having difficulty conceiving two years after our marriage, he suggested I stay at home and prepare for pregnancy. His income was enough for us, and at that time he was still devoted to our family.

Until he went to Nancy's company.

I had to say that he had strong business capabilities. He became Nancy's right-hand man, helping her run the company in an orderly manner and greatly increase its market value.

Even the employees of Nancy's company once thought that he was her husband, which was why he worked so hard for her.

To outsiders, they were a match made in heaven. Whether in career or life, they were a perfect match and invincible.

Once he was on a business trip for a few months, and when he came back, he took me to do in vitro fertilization.

At that time, I was so happy that I hugged him and spun around, thinking that he finally figured it out.

But I didn't expect that it was because he felt guilty towards me.

What I lacked the least was guilt. What I needed was his wholehearted love.

I didn't know what happened in those few months, but his attitude towards me was completely obedient, and I thought he was finally moved by me.

But I didn't expect that what was waiting for me was a sharp sword, stabbing me and my mother.

I looked at the closed door and then at my mother who was crying.

During these five years, it was my caprices that made my mother suffer with me.

A forced marriage wouldn't be happy, and it would be very bitter.

It took me five years to understand it.

"If you feel uncomfortable, don't move. Take good care of yourself.

"I'll be there once I'm done with this.

"But...then wait for me."

When my mother and I came out of the room, we happened to hear him making a phone call as he left.

He left me behind and walked away briskly.

"Shameless!"

My mother was so angry that she slammed the door hard when she returned to her room.

I went to the kitchen to clean up the mess.

The chicken soup sprinkled all over the ground was still steaming.

I took bereavement leave for several days in a row. The whole company thought someone had died in my family, and they all offered their condolences.

Nancy's palpitations continued for many days.

And Luke hadn't been home for three days.

During my hospital stay, I was informed by the nurse that I had to remove my uterus as soon as possible, otherwise my life would be in danger.

As his wife, I thought he should have the right to know.

So I decided to wait for him again.

He caused me to have an induced abortion at six months of pregnancy, which was extremely harmful to me.

I hadn't been in good health, and he had been running around for Nancy. It was not surprising that he wouldn't even bother to attend the funeral if I died, let alone care about my abortion.

It was the last chance I gave him for this family.

Suddenly, I heard the sound of a text message on my phone.

It was a text message notification from the bank, which indicated me that my card had been used for over thirty thousand dollars.

There were so many unread text messages on my phone, because I was usually too lazy to read them. This time, I took a look because it popped up.

Luke usually was the one who used my card. What happened? Why did he need so much money?

Did he have a physical problem?

Ever since Nancy fell ill, I hadn't been able to reach him. After many twists and turns, I finally found him.

"Honey."

My call got stuck in my throat.

The scene before me was incredibly painful to witness.

He squeezed the wet towel and carefully wiped Nancy's body.

Although he had a scruffy beard, he looked energetic.

It was as if he became a superman for Nancy and never knew pain again.

But when I was with him, I didn't want him to even touch a needle, for fear that he would hurt himself.

But he actually could do all this for Nancy.

I Knocked on the door.

He turned around and the moment he saw me, his expression changed from guilty to indifferent.

"What are you doing here? Consider I borrowed that thirty thousand dollars. I'll pay back to you when I get my salary."

The first thing he did was to distance himself from me.

Had I ever asked him for a penny in all these years?

I didn't even care how much money was in my account.

I was just worried that he didn't have enough to spend, so I worked hard every day to make money.

But maybe all this money was spent on Nancy.

Nancy sat up from the bed and pretended to be puzzled. "Luke, you paid the surgery for me? And Madison doesn't know yet? You shouldn't do that."

"The company has been in a big deficit lately, and it's not enough to pay for your surgery. Your palpitations couldn't be diagnosed, and even if the commercial insurance covers it, it's not enough. These thirty thousand dollars is just a small fraction of the total. I'm out of options."

"But you just lost your baby. You should take care of Madison. What if you completely break her heart?" She said.

He lip-synced to me as he said, "Isn't that exactly what I want?"

It turned out that Nancy's target was never Luke from the very beginning, but me.
