Chapter 3

The Westbrook Foundation Gala glittered with wealth and power. Crystal chandeliers cast prismatic light across the ballroom, where New York's elite mingled in designer attire and practiced smiles. I smoothed the silk of my emerald gown—the one Jayden had insisted I buy for tonight—and tried to ignore the flutter of nerves in my stomach.

"You look stunning," Jayden whispered, his hand warm against the small of my back. "Everyone's watching you."

I smiled up at him, searching his face for any sign of the distance that had grown between us since our anniversary. Tonight was supposed to be our fresh start, our recommitment to each other. Jayden had been attentive all evening, introducing me to business associates with pride in his voice.

"Mr. Knight," a silver-haired man in a tuxedo approached, hand extended. "The Westbrook deal wouldn't have happened without you."

Jayden's chest puffed slightly as he shook the man's hand. "Just good business sense, Richard. Though I will say, the timing couldn't have been better."

I watched Jayden's face light up as he discussed the details of whatever deal they'd closed. This was the Jayden I loved—confident, brilliant, passionate about his work. For a moment, I could almost forget about Charley and the phone call that had shattered our anniversary.

"Excuse me," I murmured, feeling my bladder protest after too much champagne. "I need to use the restroom."

Jayden nodded absently, already deep in conversation about market projections.

The hallway leading to the restrooms was quieter, the sounds of the party muffled by thick carpet and closed doors. I took a deep breath, preparing to return and play the perfect partner a little longer.

That's when I heard it—a collective gasp from the ballroom, followed by a ripple of murmurs.

Curiosity pulled me back toward the party. I paused at the doorway, scanning the crowd for the source of the commotion.

She stood in the center of the room like a flame, her red dress clinging to every curve, cut low enough to draw every eye. Her dark hair cascaded over bare shoulders, and her red lips curved into a smile that somehow managed to be both sweet and predatory.

Charley West.

My stomach dropped as I watched Jayden's head snap toward her, his entire body tensing like a bowstring. The business associates forgotten, he took a step forward, then another, moving through the crowd as if pulled by an invisible force.

"Jayden," I called, my voice sounding small even to my own ears.

He didn't turn. Didn't even hesitate.

I stood frozen as Charley's eyes found Jayden's across the room. Her smile widened, and she extended one manicured hand toward him in a gesture both beckoning and possessive.

The champagne in my stomach threatened to rise back up my throat.

I watched them meet in the middle of the room, her hand sliding into his as naturally as if it belonged there. Jayden didn't pull away. Instead, he leaned down, and she whispered something in his ear that made him laugh—a real laugh, not the polite chuckle he'd been using all evening.

Something inside me cracked.

I turned away, unable to watch anymore, and headed for the bar. The bartender slid me another glass of champagne without asking, probably recognizing me from earlier.

"Make it a double," I said, my voice steadier than I felt.

I was halfway through the glass when I sensed someone beside me. A cloud of expensive perfume enveloped me before she even spoke.

"Enjoying the party?"

I turned to find Charley West standing next to me, her red dress even more stunning up close. Her eyes sparkled with malice barely disguised as friendliness.

"Wren, isn't it?" she continued, signalingthe bartender for her own drink. "Jayden's told me so much about you."

"I doubt that," I replied, trying to keep my voice level.

She laughed, the sound like breaking glass. "Oh, we've had plenty of time to talk about... everything." She emphasized the last word, her eyes never leaving mine.

"Charley," I started, but she cut me off.

"It's so sweet of you to keep him company all these years," she said, her voice dripping with false sweetness. "But honestly, everyone knows you're just his cute little replacement."

The bar suddenly felt too hot, too crowded. I glanced around and noticed several nearby guests pretending not to listen while straining to catch every word.

"Did you really think he'd choose you permanently?" Charley continued, her voice carrying just enough to ensure others could hear. "I'm his first love, his true love. Everyone knows that."

My glass trembled in my hand as humiliation burned through me. Not just because of her words, but because of the audience we'd attracted. How many people were hearing this? How many were already whispering behind their hands?

"Wren," Charley leaned closer, her perfume suffocating me. "Don't worry. I'm sure you'll find someone who appreciates... whatever it is you have to offer."

The champagne glass shattered in my grip, sending shards of crystal and droplets of alcohol across the polished bar top. And in that moment, surrounded by whispers and stares, I realized that Charley West wasn't just Jayden's past—she was determined to make herself my future's nightmare.
