Chapter 4

The email arrived on a Tuesday morning while I was icing my feet after rehearsal.

*Dear Ms. Marlowe, Thank you for your interest in our upcoming season. Unfortunately, we will not be moving forward with your audition at this time.*

I stared at the screen. It was the second rejection in three days. Both from companies I'd been certain would at least see me. Both phrased almost identically. Both arriving without explanation.

Celeste had been furious when I told her. "That makes no sense. Your technique is solid now. Your audition tape was beautiful. Something's wrong."

I didn't argue. But I felt it settling into my bones anyway — that old familiar weight. Maybe I wasn't good enough. Maybe the years away had damaged something I couldn't repair. Maybe this was always going to be the ceiling.

I closed my laptop. Buster nudged my hand with his nose, sensing the shift in my mood. I scratched behind his ears and tried not to think about it.

Two weeks later, something changed.

An artistic director I'd contacted months ago — someone who'd never responded — suddenly replied with an audition slot. Then another company reached out, one I hadn't even approached. Doors that had been firmly closed were quietly opening.

"Maybe they're just noticing you now," Celeste said over coffee. "Word travels."

I wanted to believe that. But there was something too deliberate about the timing. Too coordinated.

I mentioned it to Ambrose that evening. We were walking Buster through Prospect Park, the autumn light turning everything gold. He'd been attending my rehearsals for weeks now, always in that same back row, never intrusive. We'd fallen into an easy rhythm — walks after practice, quiet dinners, conversations that stretched late into the night.

"Opportunities opening up?" His tone was carefully neutral.

"Yeah. It's strange. Like someone flipped a switch."

He was quiet for a moment. Then: "You opened them. I made sure no one closed them behind you."

I stopped walking. Buster's leash went taut. "What does that mean?"

Ambrose turned to face me. His expression was calm. Steady. "There were people working to keep you out. Werewolf social circles with reach into the human dance world. They were blacklisting you."

The words landed like stones. "Gloria."

"Her allies, yes. They wanted to ensure your career never rose high enough to embarrass the Silvercrest name." He said it matter-of-factly, like he was describing weather patterns. "I cleared the interference."

I should have been angry that he hadn't told me. Should have demanded to know the details. Instead, I felt something crack open in my chest — not pain, but the opposite. Relief. Gratitude. The specific exhaustion of someone who has been fighting alone for so long she'd forgotten what it felt like to have someone else carry part of the weight.

"Thank you," I whispered.

His hand moved slightly, like he wanted to reach for me but caught himself. "You don't need to thank me for this."

We stood there on the path while joggers passed and Buster sniffed at fallen leaves. The evening light caught in Ambrose's hair, turning the silver at his temples almost white. I wanted to say more. Wanted to close the distance between us. But my body still carried too much memory of what happened the last time I trusted someone completely.

So I just nodded. Started walking again. His presence beside me felt like a promise I wasn't ready to name yet.

---

The stumble happened three nights later.

We were walking home from a late rehearsal. I was exhausted, my legs shaky from two hours of allegro combinations. Buster trotted between us on his leash, perfectly content. I wasn't paying attention to the sidewalk.

My foot caught on an uneven curb.

I felt myself tipping forward — and then Ambrose's hand was at my waist, steadying me before I'd even registered the motion. His palm was warm through the thin fabric of my jacket. Solid. Certain.

The contact sent heat radiating through my entire body.

Not the electric shock I'd felt at eighteen when I first scented Maddox. This was different. Deeper. Like something settling into place after years of being slightly misaligned. Like coming home to a house I'd never seen but somehow recognized.

We stood frozen on the sidewalk. His hand didn't drop immediately. I didn't pull away.

The city noise faded to background hum. Someone honked three blocks over. A dog barked. But in the small circle of space we occupied, everything was very still.

Buster looked up at both of us with that patient, knowing expression golden retrievers seem to specialize in. His tail wagged slowly, like he'd been waiting for this and was pleased we'd finally figured it out.

Ambrose's thumb moved slightly against my waist. Just a fraction. A question.

I leaned into the contact instead of away.

His breath caught. I heard it clearly in the quiet. His other hand came up slowly, carefully, and tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear. His fingers lingered at my temple.

"Marlowe." My name in his voice sounded like a prayer. Like something he'd been holding back for years.

I should have said something. Should have named what was happening between us. But words felt insufficient. So I just stood there with his hand at my waist and his fingers in my hair, and I let myself feel safe.

We stayed like that for a long moment. Then Buster tugged on his leash, impatient with our stillness, and the spell broke gently.

Ambrose's hand slipped from my waist. But his fingers found mine as we started walking again. Our hands fit together easily, naturally, like they'd been doing this for years instead of seconds.

Neither of us spoke the rest of the way home. We didn't need to.

---

His apartment was in Brooklyn Heights, in a converted brownstone with tall windows and hardwood floors that creaked in all the right places. He'd invited me over for dinner — something we'd done before, casual and easy. But tonight felt different. Heavier with possibility.

I was looking at his bookshelves while he finished cooking. Lots of history. Some poetry. A worn copy of a ballet encyclopedia that made me smile.

Then I saw the cabinet.

It was tucked in the corner, wood-paneled and unobtrusive. Something about it pulled at me. I opened it without thinking.

Inside were recordings. Dozens of them, carefully labeled and organized. VHS tapes converted to digital. DVDs in slim cases. USB drives in a small wooden box.

I pulled one out. The label read: *Marlowe — Regional Competition, 2018.*

My hands started shaking.

I opened another. *Studio Showcase, Spring 2017.* Another. *Debut Performance, Lincoln Center, 2019.*

There were more. So many more. Polished recordings from major competitions. Grainy footage from small studio showcases that barely anyone attended. A physical program from my debut performance, the edges worn soft with handling, with handwritten notes in the margins in Ambrose's precise script.

I picked up the program with trembling fingers. The notes were small observations. Technical details. Moments he'd found beautiful. One phrase, underlined twice: *She makes it look like breathing.*

I heard him come up behind me. Felt his presence in the doorway.

"How long?" My voice came out barely above a whisper.

He didn't pretend not to understand. "Long enough."

I turned to face him. He was standing very still, watching me with that patient calm he carried everywhere. But underneath I could see something raw. Vulnerable. Years of silent grief he'd carried alone.

He'd known. He'd recognized me as his mate years ago. And he'd said nothing. Done nothing. Just — watched. Waited. Collected these fragments of my life like they were sacred.

I set the program down carefully on the cabinet. My hands were still shaking.

Then I crossed the space between us and took his hand.

His fingers closed around mine immediately. Without hesitation. Like they'd been waiting for permission. Like this was the moment he'd been holding his breath for.

I looked up at him. Really looked. At the silver in his hair and the lines at the corners of his eyes and the absolute steadiness in his gaze. At the man who had loved me in silence for years because I belonged to someone else. Who had waited. Who had never asked for anything.

Who was still waiting now.

"Ambrose," I said quietly.

His thumb brushed across my knuckles. "I'm here."

I didn't have words for what I felt. Gratitude and grief and something else — something that felt like hope but deeper, more certain. So I just held his hand and let the silence say what I couldn't yet.

He understood. He always understood.

We stood there in his apartment with my past spread out in careful recordings behind me and my future standing patient in front of me, and for the first time in years, I felt like I was exactly where I was supposed to be.
