Chapter 1

The hospital ceiling had water stains shaped like continents I didn't recognize. I'd been staring at them for three days, counting the hours between morphine doses, trying not to breathe too deeply because my ribs screamed every time my lungs expanded. The rogue attack had been fast and brutal. I remembered teeth. I remembered falling. I remembered my wolf trying to surface and failing, too weak from months of dormancy to do anything but whimper as claws tore through my side.

The doctor said I was lucky. A fractured arm. Deep gashes across my ribs that would scar even with werewolf healing. My wolf was too depleted to accelerate the process. So I lay there in the sterile white room, bandaged and broken, listening to the steady beep of monitors and the distant murmur of pack members visiting other patients down the hall.

I didn't expect Maddox to come. I had stopped expecting anything from him a long time ago.

But on the third night, I heard his voice in the corridor. Sharp. Urgent. The specific tone he used when he was barely holding himself together. My wolf stirred for the first time in weeks. It was a faint flutter, like a candle trying to catch in the wind. Hope, I realized. My stupid, broken wolf still had hope.

I turned my head toward the door. Listened to his footsteps approach. Heavy boots on linoleum. Getting closer. My heart rate spiked. The monitor beeped faster. I tried to sit up and gasped as pain lanced through my side. I didn't care. He was coming. He had finally come.

The footsteps passed my door without pausing.

I froze. Stared at the empty doorway. Heard him knock on the next room down. Gloria's room. Where Gloria Bailey, his chosen Luna, was being treated for a superficial scratch on her forearm. I had seen her earlier in the day, laughing with nurses, her hair perfectly styled, her makeup flawless.

"Baby, I got here as fast as I could." Maddox's voice carried through the thin wall. Rough with concern. The kind of concern I used to hear in my dreams. "Are you okay? Does it hurt?"

Gloria's laugh was bright and performative. "Oh, Maddox, you're so dramatic. It's just a little scratch. But I'm so glad you're here."

I lay very still. My wolf, that fragile flicker of hope, let out a howl so deep it didn't make a sound. It reverberated through my entire consciousness like a shockwave, splitting something fundamental inside me. Then it fell silent. Completely. Permanently. The absence was so absolute I couldn't breathe around it.

I pressed the call button. When the nurse came, I told her I needed to be discharged. She argued. I signed the forms anyway. My hand shook so badly I could barely hold the pen.

Five days later, I stood in the Silvercrest ceremonial hall. The space was too large for just the two of us. Maddox had tried to refuse the meeting. I had invoked pack law. He couldn't deny a formal request from a bonded mate. Even a rejected one.

He looked tired. There were shadows under his eyes I didn't remember being there before. He stood near the raised platform where Alphas conducted official business, arms crossed, jaw tight. He wouldn't meet my gaze.

"Marlowe." His voice was flat. "What do you want?"

I walked forward slowly. My ribs still ached. My arm was in a sling. I stopped three feet away from him and straightened my spine. I had rehearsed this. I needed to get the words exactly right.

"I, Marlowe," I said quietly, "accept your rejection, Alpha Maddox of Silvercrest Pack."

The bond snapped.

It felt like a bone breaking inside my chest. A clean fracture. Immediate and absolute. I gasped and staggered, catching myself on the edge of the platform. Maddox made a sound I had never heard from him before. A raw, animal noise of shock and agony. His hand flew to his chest. His knees buckled. He caught himself on the platform across from me, staring at me with wide, disbelieving eyes.

"What—" He couldn't finish. His wolf was erupting inside him. I could see it in the way his shoulders shook, the way his breathing turned ragged. He had never anticipated it would feel like this. He had rejected me months ago. He thought the pain was already done.

I straightened. The pain in my chest was clarifying. It burned away everything soft and left only bone.

"The compensation," I said. My voice didn't shake. "The settlement you owe me for the pack debts I covered. I want it now."

He stared at me. Really looked at me for the first time in years. I saw the exact moment he registered what he was seeing. A hollow-eyed stranger. Someone who had already left. Someone who was never coming back.

"Marlowe, wait—"

"Now," I repeated.

He pulled out his phone with shaking hands. Transferred the funds. My phone buzzed in my pocket. I didn't check it. I turned and walked toward the door.

"Marlowe, please." His voice cracked. "We need to talk about this."

I stopped. Didn't turn around. "There's nothing left to talk about."

I walked out. The autumn air hit my face. Cold and clean. I got into my car. Drove away from the Silvercrest estate. Didn't look in the rearview mirror.

I didn't look back.
