After I Lost Our Baby, My Husband Chose His Sister Novel Cover

After I Lost Our Baby, My Husband Chose His Sister

Seven years ago, Connor knelt in Central Park, swearing I would never face the world alone. Tonight, that oath lies in ruins. I spent seven hours on his beef Wellington, uncorked the Brooklyn Bordeaux, and lit the vanilla-sandalwood candles from our Bali honeymoon, all in a green silk dress that turned my eyes to sea glass. He was due at 7:47. Instead, he chose his sister, right after I lost our baby. The promise is broken, and the grief cuts deeper than any betrayal.

Chapter 1

I spent seven hours cooking Connor's favorite meal.

The beef Wellington sat on the counter, golden and perfect. I'd practiced the pastry twice this week to get it right. The wine was a 2015 Bordeaux I'd found at an estate sale in Brooklyn. Candles lined the dining table in the townhouse—vanilla and sandalwood, the scents from our honeymoon in Bali. I wore the green silk dress Connor once said made my eyes look like sea glass.

Seven years. Seven years since he'd knelt in Central Park with a ring and a promise that I would never be alone again.

I checked my phone. 7:47 PM. Connor was supposed to be home at six.

The candles had burned down an inch. I trimmed the wicks and relit them. The beef was still warm in the oven. Everything was ready. I sat at the table and waited.

At 8:23, I heard his key in the lock.

Connor came through the door in his charcoal suit, tie loosened, phone pressed to his ear. He barely glanced at me as he shrugged off his jacket and tossed it over a chair. "—No, tell them we're not moving on price. They can take the offer or sit on the property for another six months—"

I stood. "Connor."

He held up one finger. Wait.

I waited.

He paced into the living room, still talking. The candles flickered. The wine was breathing. I could smell the rosemary from the roasted potatoes going cold on the stove.

When he finally hung up, I smiled. "Happy anniversary."

Connor blinked. For a second, his face went blank. Then he rubbed his eyes and exhaled. "Right. God. Rosemary, I'm sorry. The Tribeca deal went sideways and I—" He looked at the table. The candles. The wine. "You cooked."

"Your favorite."

He stepped toward me, and for a heartbeat I thought he might actually sit down. Then a soft voice called from upstairs.

"Connor?"

Jolene.

Connor's head turned toward the staircase. "Is that—"

"She said she wasn't feeling well earlier," I said quickly. "I checked on her at six. She was resting."

"Connor?" Jolene's voice again, higher now. Weaker. "I don't feel good."

Connor was already moving toward the stairs. "I'll be right back."

"Connor, wait—"

But he was gone.

I stood there in my green dress, holding a wine glass I hadn't poured yet, listening to his footsteps fade down the hall. I heard Jolene's door open. Her soft, trembling words. Connor's low, soothing murmur.

I sat down at the table.

The candles kept burning.

At 9:15, I ate a bite of the Wellington. It was dry now. The pastry had gone soggy. I chewed slowly and washed it down with wine.

At 10:03, I blew out the candles and covered the dishes with foil.

Connor never came back downstairs.

---

The next morning, I brought Jolene her breakfast tray. Poached eggs, sourdough toast, fresh-squeezed orange juice. I balanced it carefully as I knocked on her door.

"Come in."

Jolene was sitting up in her white four-poster bed, her dark hair spilling over the silk pillows like something out of a painting. She wore a cashmere robe the color of champagne. Her wheelchair sat beside the bed, within arm's reach, like it always was.

She smiled when she saw me. "You're so sweet, Rosemary."

I set the tray on her lap. "How are you feeling?"

"Much better." She picked up her fork and took a delicate bite of egg. "Connor stayed with me for hours last night. He's such a good brother."

I said nothing.

Jolene's eyes flicked up to mine. "You made dinner, didn't you? I smelled it from up here. Beef Wellington?"

"Yes."

"That's Connor's favorite." She tilted her head. "He didn't eat with you?"

"No."

"Oh." She pressed a hand to her chest, her face the picture of concern. "I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to ruin your evening. I just felt so awful, and Connor was the only one who could—" She trailed off, biting her lip. "You understand, don't you?"

I picked up the empty water glass from her nightstand. "Of course."

Jolene reached for the soup bowl on her tray. French onion, still steaming. She lifted it carefully with both hands, like she was about to take a sip.

Then she tipped it.

The scalding broth hit my forearms and splashed across my chest. I gasped and stumbled back, the glass slipping from my hand and shattering on the hardwood.

Jolene's mouth fell open. "Oh my God! Rosemary, I'm so sorry! My hands—they just slipped—"

The pain was white-hot. My skin screamed.

I pressed my burned arms against my stomach and turned toward the door.

"Rosemary, wait—" Jolene's voice followed me down the hall, sweet and horrified. "I didn't mean to! Please, let me call someone—"

I didn't answer. I walked downstairs to the kitchen, my vision blurring at the edges. I turned on the faucet and shoved my arms under the cold water. The burn marks were already blistering, angry red streaks across my wrists and forearms.

I stood there for twenty minutes, shaking, while the water ran.

No one came to check on me.

---

That night, I couldn't sleep. The burns throbbed under the gauze I'd wrapped myself. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the soup tipping in slow motion. Jolene's wide, innocent eyes. *I didn't mean to.*

At 2 AM, I gave up and went downstairs looking for the first-aid kit. The house was silent. I pushed open the door to Connor's study.

His laptop was still open on the desk, the screen glowing faintly in the dark.

I wasn't trying to snoop. I was just looking for the kit in the drawer beneath. But the document on the screen caught my eye.

**DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE AGREEMENT**

**Petitioner: Connor Elijah Hamilton**

**Respondent: Rosemary Adelaide Webb Hamilton**

I stopped breathing.

I scrolled down. The terms were clean and brutal. No alimony. No division of assets. The townhouse, the summer home in the Hamptons, the investment accounts—all of it stayed with Connor. I would leave the marriage with nothing but my personal belongings.

Connor's signature was already on the last page. Black ink, dated three days ago.

A yellow sticky note was stuck to the printed copy beside the keyboard. Jolene's looping handwriting:

*She'll sign. She always does what she's told.*

I stood there in the dark, my burned arms hanging at my sides, staring at my husband's signature.

I didn't cry.

I closed the laptop.

I went back upstairs and climbed into bed.

But something inside me—something that had been bending and bending for two years—finally cracked.
