Chapter 1

The overhead lights in the surgical wing were always too bright. I blinked against them as I stripped off my gloves, the snap of latex punctuating the end of another successful procedure. Dr. Chen clapped me on the shoulder.

"Beautiful work, Turner. That ovarian torsion could've gone south fast."

I managed a smile. "Just another Tuesday."

But it wasn't just another Tuesday. It was three days before my wedding.

In the scrub room, I washed my hands with the same methodical precision I'd used for a decade. Soap. Water. Count to twenty. The ritual steadied me when nothing else could. Through the small window, I could see the nurses' station, the familiar hum of the hospital that had become more home than my actual apartment ever was.

When I pushed through the double doors into the corridor, Sarah from the nursing staff was waiting with a bouquet so large she could barely hold it.

"Dr. Turner! These just came for you."

Twelve white roses. Perfect, pristine, expensive. I took them carefully, and Sarah handed me the card with a knowing grin.

The handwriting was Levi's—neat, controlled, the kind of penmanship they don't teach anymore. *Three more days until forever. I love you more than words. —L*

My chest tightened in that good way, the way it always did when he did these things. The surprise flowers. The handwritten notes. The way he showed up at 2 AM with coffee when I had back-to-back shifts.

"He's a keeper," Sarah said.

"Yeah." I touched the edge of the card. "He is."

Back in my office, I set the roses on the corner of my desk, next to the framed photo I kept there. Me and Flynn, maybe ten and fourteen, at Coney Island. His arm slung around my shoulders, both of us sunburned and grinning. I touched the frame without meaning to.

*Three more days,* I thought. *And then everything starts over.*

I changed out of my scrubs, pulled on jeans and a silk blouse, and checked my phone. Twelve texts in the group chat.

*WHERE ARE YOU*

*We're setting up!*

*Bride is REQUIRED to be on time to her own bachelorette party*

I smiled and typed back: *On my way. Don't start without me.*

But they would. They always did.

---

The SoHo loft was exactly what my friends thought I wanted. Fairy lights strung across exposed brick. A custom floral backdrop for photos. Champagne bottles sweating in silver buckets. A playlist of songs from college that made me feel both nostalgic and old.

I walked in to a chorus of shrieks.

"There she is!"

"The bride!"

Hands pulled me into hugs. Someone pressed a glass into my palm. I smiled until my face hurt, laughed at the right moments, posed for pictures in front of the flowers.

Across the room, Destiny sat on the white leather sofa, legs crossed, wearing a black dress that looked more funeral than celebration. Her lips were painted that coral shade she always wore. She raised her glass to me when our eyes met.

I raised mine back.

She was Flynn's daughter. My niece. The girl I'd helped raise after he died. She had every right to be here.

Even if something about her smile always felt wrong.

"Okay, okay!" My friend Jess clapped her hands, her voice cutting through the music. "Time for Truth or Dare!"

Groans. Laughter. Someone refilled my glass.

We arranged ourselves in a loose circle on the floor and the sofa. Jess spun an empty champagne bottle in the center. It landed on Claire, who chose dare and had to text her ex something embarrassing. It landed on Mara, who admitted she'd once stolen hotel bathrobes. Harmless. Silly. The kind of game you play when you're too old for it but too drunk to care.

The bottle spun again.

It pointed at Destiny.

"Truth or dare, Destiny?" Jess asked.

Destiny didn't hesitate. "Truth."

She stood up. Slowly. Like she'd been waiting for this.

The room quieted.

She looked at me. Only at me.

"I've been sleeping with Levi Harrison for six years."

The words landed like a scalpel between my ribs.

Someone laughed nervously. "Wait, what?"

Destiny didn't blink. "I've been pregnant by him four times. And every single time, Aunt Violet performed the procedure herself."

My champagne glass was cold in my hand. I couldn't feel my fingers.

"I checked in under a fake name," she continued, her voice soft, almost tender. "Dana Wells. You never knew it was me. But it was. Every time."

The room was silent now. Completely silent.

I looked at her. At the coral lipstick. At the black dress. At the girl I used to read bedtime stories to.

My hands trembled once. Just once.

Then I set the glass down on the coffee table. Stood. Picked up my coat from the back of the chair.

And walked out.

No one stopped me.

No one said a word.

The door clicked shut behind me, and the night air hit my face like a slap.

I didn't cry.

I didn't scream.

I just walked.

---

By the time I got home, it was past midnight. My apartment was dark and cold. I didn't turn on the lights. I sat at my desk and stared at nothing for two hours.

Then I pulled my hair into a tight knot, opened my laptop, and logged into the clinic's patient database.

I searched for "Dana Wells."

Four entries. Four procedures. Four dates that aligned perfectly with times Destiny had claimed to be visiting friends, attending conferences, traveling.

I opened each file. Read every word. Cross-referenced every detail.

By 4 AM, I had a dossier.

Irrefutable.

Complete.

I touched the photo of Flynn on my bedside table. His arm around my shoulders. Both of us smiling.

*I'm sorry,* I thought. *I'm so sorry.*

Then I picked up my phone and started making calls.

The venue. The florist. The caterer. My mother. His mother.

By sunrise, the wedding was canceled.

And I still hadn't cried.
