Chapter 4

I took the subway to Rafael's apartment on Saturday morning. Colin didn't know I was leaving. I didn't tell him. I just walked out the door while he was in his study and disappeared into the underground.

The train rattled and swayed. I stood holding the pole and watched the city blur past in the dark. Normal people surrounded me. A woman with grocery bags. A kid with headphones. An old man reading a paperback with a cracked spine.

I'd forgotten what normal felt like.

Rafael lived in the East Village in a fourth-floor walkup with a fire escape and plants on the windowsill. I knocked. He opened the door in jeans and an old college sweatshirt, and his face broke into a grin.

"Sof," he said.

He pulled me into a hug. A real one. The kind that squeezed the air out of my lungs. When he let go, his eyes were bright.

"How long has it been?" he asked.

"Four months," I said quietly.

His smile faded. "That long?"

I nodded.

He stepped back and let me in. The apartment was small and messy and alive. Books everywhere. Dishes in the sink. A guitar leaning against the couch. Proof that an actual human being lived here.

He made coffee in a French press. We sat at his tiny kitchen table with mugs that didn't match, and he looked at me like he was seeing me for the first time in years.

"You look different," he said.

"Do I?"

"Yeah." He tilted his head. "You look... awake."

I wrapped my hands around the warm mug. "I'm leaving him."

Rafael went very still. Then he set down his coffee and reached across the table and gripped my hand so hard it hurt.

"Thank God," he whispered.

I blinked. "You're not surprised?"

"Sof, I've been waiting five years to hear you say that." His voice cracked. "Five years watching you disappear into that fucking penthouse. Into that marriage. I wanted to—" He stopped. Swallowed. "Dad wouldn't let me say anything. The alliance. The business. But I wanted to drive up there and drag you out myself."

Tears burned behind my eyes. "Rafa—"

"You were always the strong one," he said. "Even when we were kids. You stood up to Dad. You protected me. And then you married Colin Barnes and it was like watching someone turn off a light."

I looked down at our hands. His grip was warm and solid and real.

"I'm scared," I admitted.

"Of what?"

"Of what happens next. Of Dad. Of—"

"Dad can go to hell," Rafael said flatly. "You want money? I have money. You want a place to stay? You can have my couch. You want contacts? I know people. Lawyers. Good ones. Whatever you need, Sof. I'm here."

I started crying. Not sad tears. Relief. Recognition. The feeling of not being alone.

Rafael came around the table and hugged me again. I pressed my face against his shoulder and let myself break a little.

"You're going to be okay," he said quietly. "Better than okay. You're going to be free."

I believed him.

When I left his apartment two hours later, I walked differently. Straighter. Lighter. Like I'd set something heavy down and forgotten to pick it back up.

I didn't go home.

I went to a bookshop and bought three novels I'd wanted to read for years. I went to a café and ordered the sweetest drink on the menu. I sat by the window and watched people pass and felt the city breathe around me.

My phone buzzed. Colin: *Where are you?*

I stared at the message. Five years ago, I would have answered immediately. Apologized. Rushed home.

I turned off my phone and ordered another coffee.

That night, Colin made his announcement at dinner. We were sitting at opposite ends of the long table — the one his decorator had chosen, the one that seated twelve but only ever sat two. He cut into his steak with surgical precision.

"I'm taking Bridget to Paris on Tuesday," he said. "Business trip. I'll be back Friday."

He didn't look at me when he said it.

I reached for the wine bottle. Poured myself a full glass. Colin's jaw tightened — I was only supposed to have one glass with dinner, his rule — but he said nothing.

"Okay," I said.

He looked up. "That's it?"

I took a long sip. "What do you want me to say?"

"Most wives would—" He stopped.

"Would what?" I asked quietly. "Object? Cry? Beg you not to go?"

His eyes narrowed. "Sofia—"

"Have a good trip," I said.

I stood up and left the table. My steak was half-eaten. I didn't care. I walked to the bedroom and locked the door and called Silas.

He answered on the first ring. "Hey."

"Can you meet me?" I asked.

"When?"

"Now."

Silence. Then: "Send me the address."

I met him at a hotel in Midtown. Not one of the Barnes properties. Just a quiet place with clean sheets and no history. When I opened the door, he was standing in the hallway with that look — the one that made me feel seen all the way through.

He didn't ask questions. He just pulled me inside and kissed me like I was the only real thing in the world.

We didn't leave the room until morning.

I lay with my head on his chest and listened to his heartbeat and felt the particular tension I'd carried for five years finally loosen.

"Colin's taking Bridget to Paris on Tuesday," I said quietly.

Silas's hand tightened on my shoulder. "Good."

I looked up at him. "Good?"

"The further away he is," Silas said, "the easier this gets."

He was right.

When I finally went back to the penthouse Sunday afternoon, Colin was in his study with the door closed. I walked past without stopping.

I didn't feel guilty.

I felt free.
