Chapter 2

I lit the first cigarette on Tuesday night.

The balcony was cold. Forty floors up, the wind came sharp off the Hudson, cutting through my sweater. I didn't care. I stood at the railing and watched the city glitter below while smoke curled up into the dark.

Colin banned smoking the first week we were married. He'd found an old pack in my purse — something I'd carried since college, barely touched — and his face had gone tight. "Not in this house," he'd said. Not a discussion. A decree. I'd thrown the pack away without argument.

That was five years ago.

I took a long drag and felt the burn in my lungs. The security camera above the door blinked its little red eye at me. I looked straight at it and exhaled slowly.

Let him watch.

I smoked two more before I went back inside. The apartment was silent. Colin was in his study with the door closed, the way he always was after nine PM. I walked past without stopping and went to the kitchen.

I ordered Thai food on my phone. The greasy kind — pad thai with extra oil, spring rolls, fried rice. The kind that came in plastic containers that sweated and left rings on surfaces. Delivery in thirty minutes.

When it arrived, I unpacked everything directly onto the marble counter. I didn't use plates. I ate standing up, right there in the middle of Colin's pristine kitchen, and when I was done I left the containers exactly where they were.

Then I went to the living room and turned on music.

Loud.

It was past ten. Colin's cutoff was ten PM exactly — silence after that, because he needed "optimal conditions" for sleep, even though his bedroom was on the opposite side of the penthouse with two closed doors between us.

I picked a playlist I hadn't listened to in years. The kind of music I'd loved before this marriage — raw and loud and alive. I turned the volume up until I could feel the bass in my chest and sat down on the couch.

I didn't feel guilty.

I felt awake.

The study door opened. Colin appeared in the hallway, his face unreadable in the dim light. He stood there for a long moment, just looking at me. Then he walked over and turned the music off.

The silence was immediate and total.

"It's after ten," he said.

I looked up at him. "I know."

"You know the rules."

"Your rules," I said quietly.

Something flickered across his face. Irritation, maybe. Or confusion. He glanced toward the kitchen, and I watched him register the takeout containers on the counter. His jaw tightened.

"What is this?" he asked.

"Dinner."

"Sofia—"

"I was hungry," I said. "So I ate."

He stared at me like I was a malfunctioning appliance. "We don't order takeout. You know that."

"You don't order takeout," I corrected. "I just did."

His eyes narrowed. He walked to the kitchen and looked at the mess I'd left — the containers, the plastic forks, the little pools of oil on the marble. When he turned back to me, his voice was colder.

"Clean this up."

I stayed exactly where I was. "No."

The word hung in the air between us.

Colin went very still. It was the thing his assistants had learned to fear — the absolute motionless quality he took on when something threatened his control. I'd seen it a hundred times. Board meetings. Negotiations. Moments when someone pushed back.

It had always worked.

I looked at him and felt nothing.

"What's gotten into you?" he asked quietly.

I almost laughed. Five years. Five years of late-night phone calls and early-morning disappearances and rules that turned our home into a museum. Five years of being managed and measured and found acceptable only when I made myself invisible.

And he wanted to know what had gotten into me.

"Nothing," I said. "Absolutely nothing."

He took a step closer. "You've been acting strange since—"

"Since what?" I interrupted. "Since you left at two in the morning last week? Since you came back smelling like her perfume? Since you've spent five years treating me like furniture?"

His face didn't change. That was the worst part. No guilt. No recognition. Just cold assessment.

"This isn't like you," he said.

"No," I agreed. "It's not."

I stood up slowly. We were three feet apart. Close enough that I could see the pale grey of his eyes — the same color as Silas's, but completely different. Empty where Silas's were warm. Flat where Silas's had depth.

"What are you going to do, Colin?" I asked softly. "Divorce me?"

Something shifted in his expression. Not quite shock. More like the first crack in ice that's been solid too long.

I smiled. It felt strange on my face. "That's what I thought."

I walked past him toward the bedroom. He didn't move. Didn't speak. I could feel his eyes on my back the whole way down the hall.

I closed the door behind me and locked it.

Then I picked up my phone and texted Diana: *Started smoking again. Feels good.*

Her response came immediately: *ABOUT TIME.*

I lay down on the bed — the enormous, cold bed I'd shared with a stranger for five years — and stared at the ceiling.

Somewhere in the penthouse, Colin was standing in his perfect kitchen looking at takeout containers on marble.

And I felt absolutely nothing.
