After His Rejection Made Me the Lycan Prince’s Luna Chapter 1

The doorknob turned at 9:14 on a Tuesday morning, and the betrayal hit my nose before I even saw her.

Cassidy stood in the doorway of the Alpha suite. She was wearing Colton’s red flannel shirt—the oversized one I had hand-washed two days ago. It fell halfway down her thighs. But the shirt wasn't the insult. The scent was. Colton’s heavy cedar and smoke was layered over her bare collarbones so thick it smelled like a mating claim.

She widened her eyes in soft, rehearsed surprise. "Oh! Adalynn. You're back from your family’s pack already? I was just... tidying up for Alpha Colton."

Inside my ribs, my wolf went completely rigid. A low, vicious growl rumbled up my throat, vibrating against my teeth. I swallowed it down with pure willpower, refusing to give this stray the satisfaction of a scene.

"Pack your hands off his things," I said, my voice dead level. "And get out of my room."

Cassidy flinched as if I had struck her, tucking her chin and slipping past me down the stairs.

I found Colton five minutes later in his office. He sat behind his oak desk, signing patrol logs. When I stepped in, the scent of vanilla and clover from my bag didn't make him look up with a smile like it used to.

"She’s wearing your shirt, Colton," I said quietly. "In our bedroom."

Colton set his pen down slowly. His right hand reached up and rubbed the back of his neck.

It was his tell. Every time he lied to himself, his fingers touched that same spot.

"Cassidy is packless, Adalynn," he said, his tone thick with irritation. "Her dorm heater broke last night. She was freezing. I gave her a shirt and let her sleep on the couch upstairs. It’s called leadership. Don't be petty."

"Charity doesn't smell like intimate skin contact," I replied, standing tall. "And charity doesn't belong in the Alpha suite."

"Enough," he snapped. "I mentor the wolves who need me. If you can't handle my responsibilities, that’s your problem."

I looked at him—really looked at the man the Moon Goddess had bound to my soul. I said nothing else. I turned around, went back to the suite, and lay awake in the cold bed alone. Colton didn't come upstairs until dawn.

At seven sharp, the pack assembled for the morning run. Three hundred wolves lined the perimeter trail. I ran my usual flank position, keeping the pace steady. Cassidy was running three rows behind Colton.

Two miles in, Cassidy let out a sharp cry.

She collapsed mid-stride, pitching forward into the damp dirt.

Colton broke formation in a heartbeat. He didn't just check on her; he dropped to his knees, slid his arms under her waist, and pulled her flush against his chest before the entire pack. Cassidy buried her face in his neck, her small hands clutching his tactical vest, weeping softly.

I jogged over and stopped five paces away. "She tripped on flat grass, Colton. Get her to her feet and stop embarrassing the pack."

Colton’s head snapped up. His eyes burned amber with fury.

**"Silence."**

The Alpha tone slammed into my chest like an iron bar. It was designed to force wolves to their knees, to crush their windpipes until they submitted. My throat tightened. The pressure burned behind my eyes.

I didn't drop. I dug my heels into the mud, squared my shoulders, and stared straight through his glare.

My defiance seemed to snap the last thread of his pride. He stood up, still holding Cassidy against his side. Before three hundred staring wolves, his voice rang across the clearing.

"I, Colton, Alpha of the Silverfang Pack, reject you, Adalynn, as my mate."

The mark on the right side of my neck burned white-hot.

A split second later, the heat died. An icy numbness spread under my skin, like a heavy iron gate slamming shut in an abandoned cellar. Deep in my mind, my wolf let out one choked cry, crumpled, and went completely, terrifyingly silent.

Cassidy let out a tiny, muffled gasp against his chest.

Colton looked down at me, his jaw set in stone. "You have until sundown to get off Silverfang territory."

I didn't blink. I didn't drop a single tear.

"Consider it done," I said.

At dusk, I walked into the Alpha suite for the last time. I took only two things: the wooden herb kit my grandmother gave me, and my worn leather field journal. The journal held five years of boundary calculations, ward schedules, and scent formulas that had kept Silverfang safe from rogue incursions. Without them, the borders wouldn't hold a month.

I gripped the strap of my bag and opened the faint, ragged mental thread still hanging between us.

*“I, Adalynn, accept your rejection, Alpha Colton.”*

Then I cut the bond myself.

I severed the link with a violent, mental snap. Through the dying echo of the connection, miles away down in the council hall, I felt Colton stumble. I heard the crack of his knees hitting the floorboards, followed by the muffled, agonized howl of his wolf as the soul-tie tore out by its bloody roots.

A hollow ache ripped through my middle, cold and deep. I ignored it, zipped my jacket, and walked out the back gate.

By 4:00 AM, the road was pitch black.

I reached the eastern boundary stone—the final marker of Silverfang land. Across the line lay the neutral highway leading north to the Blackmoon Pack. In my pocket rested an official letter bearing the dark wax crest of Asher, the Lycan Prince. He had sent an invitation to join his high strategic council three months ago, impressed by an anonymous paper I had published on border warfare. I hadn't used it then. I was using it now.

As I paused at the stone, something strange happened.

In the dead, silent center of my chest where my wolf had fallen, a sharp thud echoed. It wasn't pain. It was a deep, heavy pulse of heat—like old iron striking stone, testing the weight of a foundation.

I pressed my hand to my sternum, holding my breath. The feeling settled into a quiet hum.

Across the asphalt, fifty yards into the pines of the neutral zone, two massive black wolves stepped out of the fog. Their eyes caught the early dawn light. They didn't growl. They dipped their muzzles in a low, formal bow and waited.

I gripped my field journal tighter under my arm and took the step across the border.

Behind me, the glowing scent-ward I had maintained for five years gave a faint, sputtering hiss—and went completely dark.
