Chapter 4

The mind-link hit me at noon.

It came through the dead remnant of the bond—weak, crackling, like a radio signal from a station that had already gone off the air. But the Alpha tone underneath it was unmistakable. Carter had never needed a clean channel to make himself felt.

I was sitting across from Xavier at the time, a territorial map spread between us, my finger tracing the northern boundary line. I stopped. My hand went flat against the paper.

The summons lasted maybe ten seconds. Carter's voice, clipped and declarative, announcing the Mate Ceremony date. Announcing Gabriella. Announcing, with the particular graciousness of a man who has never once questioned his own generosity, that he was extending me the gift of closure. That my attendance was expected.

He expected me to come.

He actually expected me to come.

I closed the link. Not with anger—anger would have been a response, and Carter did not deserve a response. I simply shut it, the way you shut a door on a room that smells like someone else's life, and turned back to the map.

Xavier had not moved. His pen was still against the page. But his eyes behind the glasses had gone very, very still—the particular stillness I had learned to read as the opposite of calm.

He said nothing. He didn't ask.

Through the thin thread of awareness that had been growing between us—not a bond yet, not fully, but something that hummed when we were in the same room—I could feel his wolf pressing against the surface of his composure. Controlled. Contained. Like a storm behind glass that knows exactly how much pressure the glass can hold.

I picked up my pen.

"Northern boundary," I said. "You were saying."

Xavier held my gaze for one more second. Then he looked down at the map.

"The northern boundary," he agreed.

Neither of us mentioned it again. But the glass looked thinner after that.

---

The neutral-ground meeting was Gabriella's idea, which told me everything I needed to know about it.

She framed it as an olive branch—a lodge just inside the border territory, neutral pack land, somewhere civilized adults could settle things amicably. Xavier's political advisors flagged it immediately as an intelligence opportunity: Carter's current alliance posture, how many wolves he brought, whether his Beta attended or sent a proxy. I agreed to go for those reasons and those reasons only.

I dressed plainly. No armor in the clothing. The armor was in my face.

Gabriella arrived on Carter's arm in soft dusty rose, her hair loose, her voice already warm and slightly breathless before she had crossed the threshold. She had the gift of making a room feel like she was confiding in it—like everyone present was being trusted with something fragile.

"I just want everyone to be happy," she said, settling into her chair with a small, earnest smile. "That's all this is. I hope we can all move forward."

She had positioned me as the aggressor before I had said a single word. The wolves in the room—Carter's two advisors, the neutral-ground mediator—all angled slightly toward her. Sympathetic. Concerned.

I had seen this before. I had watched her do this at pack dinners while I served the roast.

I sat down. I folded my hands on the table. I said nothing.

She waited for me to fill the silence with something she could use. I didn't.

The meeting went like that for twenty minutes—Gabriella performing warmth, Carter watching me with the particular intensity of a man waiting for a reaction he was certain was coming, and me giving them both nothing. My wolf, faint and far down, growled once in the dark. Not at Gabriella. At the fact that I was sitting in a room where this was being asked of me.

It was the first anger I had felt since the ceremony hall. I noted it. Filed it away.

Then Gabriella's hand went to her chest.

It was beautifully done. The sharp intake of breath. The way her fingers curled. The slight forward lean, like she was trying to hold herself together.

"The stress," she whispered. "My wolf—"

Carter was on his feet before she finished the sentence. His eyes swung to me, and whatever he saw—my stillness, my refusal to perform the guilt his script required—ignited something behind his face that had nothing to do with Gabriella and everything to do with the fact that I had not crawled back.

He shoved me.

Not a push. A shove—his hand flat against my shoulder, hard enough that my chair scraped and I stumbled backward into open air.

I did not hit the ground.

A hand caught me at the waist. One hand, steady as stone, and I was upright.

The room went silent.

I felt it before I saw it—the pressure in the air changing, thickening, the way it does before a storm makes landfall. Every wolf in the lodge went still. Not from surprise. From instinct. From something older and more biological than thought.

Xavier's eyes behind the glasses were gold.

Not flecked with gold. Gold. Fully. The Lycan wolf looking through the human face without apology or concealment, and the aura rolling off him in slow, dense waves that pressed against every set of shoulders in the room until they curved downward without their owners deciding to move.

Carter's wolf whimpered.

I heard it. Everyone heard it. A small, involuntary sound from the Alpha of the Ironridge Pack, whose wolf had spent three years reminding me I was practically an Omega.

Carter's jaw clenched. He tried to suppress it. He was half a second too late.

Xavier did not look at him. He looked at me—a single, brief check, gold eyes scanning my face with an attention that had nothing diplomatic in it—and then he turned his back on Carter entirely.

Turned his back. On an Alpha. In front of witnesses.

The hand at my waist guided me toward the door. Unhurried. Absolute.

Behind us, I heard Carter's chair scrape. Heard him pull breath to speak.

Xavier did not slow down.

The lodge door opened. Cold air. The sound of wind in the trees. We walked out, and the door swung shut behind us, and the meeting was over.

I did not look back.

But in the silence that followed, I pressed my fingertips once against the cold scar on my neck—reflex, old habit—and felt, for the first time in days, the faint warmth of something that was not grief.
