Chapter 2

My father did not hover.

That was the first thing I learned about Lycan King Mathew Silvercrest in the three days after he brought me home. He did not ask how I was feeling. He did not sit beside my bed and hold my hand. He did not apologize for the years we had been apart or explain why he had waited at the border instead of coming for me sooner.

What he did was build.

A healer arrived within the hour—a woman with silver hair and steady hands who examined the cold mark on my neck without flinching. She did not tell me it would fade. She told me it would scar, and that the scar would be permanent, and that I should wear it as proof I had survived what would have killed weaker wolves. Then she left a tonic on the bedside table and closed the door quietly behind her.

The quarters they gave me were not a guest room. They were mine. My name was already on the door in script I recognized from my mother's letters. The furniture was old Silvercrest oak. The walls smelled faintly of cedar and something else—something that made the cold knot in my chest loosen just slightly when I breathed it in.

I did not cry again. I had used up my tears on a single block of Ironridge pavement, and I would not waste another drop on a man who had escorted me out of my own ceremony.

On the second day, I heard voices in the hall outside my door. Low. Deliberate. My father's voice, and a woman's I did not recognize.

"The Crescent Ridge pact," the woman said. "Activated this morning. They will not answer Ironridge calls."

"Good," my father replied. "What about the northern routes?"

"Closed by sunset."

I pressed my ear to the door. The conversation continued for another minute, then footsteps retreated down the corridor. When I opened the door, the hall was empty.

But I understood.

My father was not comforting me. He was dismantling Carter Campbell, one alliance at a time, so quietly that Carter would not realize he was alone until the walls had already closed in.

I went back to my desk and opened my journal. I had not written in it since the night of the rejection. Now I turned to a blank page and wrote a single line:

*Ironridge wolves who once treated me as near-Omega now lower their eyes when the Silvercrest name is spoken.*

I set down the pen. My hand was steady.

---

On the third day, my father summoned me to his study.

He was standing by the window when I entered, his hands folded behind his back in a posture I was beginning to recognize. He did not turn immediately.

"There is a Lycan Court function tomorrow night," he said. "Diplomatic. Nighthollow delegation will be in attendance."

I waited.

"You will come," he continued. Still facing the window. "Not as my guest. As my daughter. You will be introduced as Sutton Silvercrest, and every wolf in that hall will know exactly what that means."

My throat tightened. "I'm not ready—"

"You are." He turned then, and his eyes met mine with the same gold intensity I had seen at the border. "You have been ready for three years. You simply did not have the name to match it."

I looked down at my hands. The incomplete mark on my neck throbbed faintly, a dull cold I had learned to ignore.

"What do I need to know?" I asked quietly.

My father's mouth curved slightly. Not quite a smile. "Everything."

He gestured to the desk, where a thick dossier lay open. I stepped closer. The pages were filled with names, pack affiliations, political histories. At the top of the first page, in bold script: *Nighthollow Court Delegation.*

And beneath it, a single name: *Xavier O'Brien, Lycan Prince.*

I scanned the details. Educated. Diplomatic. Known for composure and strategic restraint. No recorded mate bond. No public displays of Lycan-royal aggression, though his wolf was noted as "exceptionally powerful" in the footnotes.

I read the file twice. Committed the key points to memory. By the time I looked up, my father was watching me with an expression I could not quite read.

"You are not going to this function to be seen," he said slowly. "You are going to be strategic."

I met his eyes. "I know."

He nodded once. "Good."

---

The next evening, I dressed in a gown the color of winter frost—pale silver that caught the light when I moved. The neckline was high enough to cover the mark. I pinned my hair back, applied minimal makeup, and studied myself in the mirror.

I looked like someone who had not been escorted out of a ceremony three days ago.

I looked like someone who belonged.

The reception hall was enormous. Chandeliers hung from vaulted ceilings. Wolves in formal dress moved through the space in carefully choreographed social orbits. I entered on my father's arm, and the room did not go silent—but I felt the shift. Eyes turning. Conversations pausing mid-sentence.

Mathew Silvercrest's lost daughter, returned.

I kept my chin level and my expression composed. I had spent three years learning to armor myself in public. This was no different.

Except it was.

Because halfway across the hall, near a cluster of Nighthollow wolves in dark formal wear, a man went completely still.

He was tall. Glasses. Dark hair. He held a glass of something amber in one hand, but he was not drinking. He was not moving at all.

And he was staring directly at me.

I felt it before I understood it—a pull low in my chest, like a string drawn taut between us. My wolf, silent since the rejection, stirred faintly. Not waking. Just… aware.

My father's hand tightened slightly on my arm. "That," he murmured, "is Xavier O'Brien."

I did not look away.

Xavier's eyes—dark brown behind the glasses—locked onto mine across the room, and for one long second neither of us moved.

Then he set down his glass, very deliberately, and waited.

He did not come to me.

He waited to see what I would do first.

I took a breath. Steadied myself. And began walking toward him.

I was not here to be rescued.

I was here to negotiate.
