Chapter 4

The world came back in pieces.

Light first. Too bright. Sterile white that hurt to look at.

Then sound. A steady beep. Mechanical. Rhythmic. The hum of something electronic nearby.

Then smell. Antiseptic. Clean in a way that felt wrong. Chemical.

I blinked. The ceiling was white tile. Fluorescent panels. Hospital.

I tried to sit up. Pain shot through my abdomen. Sharp and deep. I gasped and fell back against the pillow.

A woman appeared beside the bed. White coat. Stethoscope around her neck. She had kind eyes. The kind that had delivered bad news before.

"Mrs. Kelley," she said softly. "Don't try to move yet. You've had surgery."

Surgery. I looked down. Saw the bandages across my stomach. Remembered the knife. The blood. The marble floor.

"Grandpa Kelley," I said. My voice came out rough. Broken.

The doctor's expression shifted. "He's stable. He had a stroke, but he's receiving treatment. He's going to be okay."

Relief flooded through me. Hot and overwhelming. I closed my eyes.

"Thank you," I whispered.

The doctor pulled a chair closer. Sat down. Her hands folded in her lap.

That's when I knew.

Something in the way she settled herself. The careful arrangement of her features. The practiced gentleness.

She was about to ruin my life.

"Mrs. Kelley," she said. "There's something we need to discuss."

I looked at her. Waited.

"When you came in, we ran a full panel of tests. Standard procedure for trauma cases." She paused. "One of those tests was a pregnancy screen."

The room tilted.

"You were pregnant," she said. Her voice was steady. Professional. "Early stages. Approximately six weeks."

*Were.*

Past tense.

I couldn't breathe. Couldn't process. The beeping sound got louder. Or maybe that was my heartbeat.

"The impact from your fall caused significant internal trauma," the doctor continued. "We did everything we could, but the damage was too severe. I'm so sorry. You've had a miscarriage."

The words landed. Each one separate and distinct.

Pregnant.

Six weeks.

Miscarriage.

I stared at the ceiling tiles. Counted them. One. Two. Three. Four.

"Mrs. Kelley?" The doctor leaned forward. "Do you understand what I'm telling you?"

I nodded. Kept counting. Five. Six. Seven.

"Is there someone I can call for you? Family? Friends?"

"No," I said.

My hand moved to my stomach. Pressed against the bandages. Felt nothing.

There had been a baby. Inside me. A baby I didn't know existed.

And now it was gone.

Because Chase shoved me.

Because I hit a table.

Because I fell.

The doctor kept talking. Something about recovery. Rest. Follow-up appointments. Her voice was background noise.

I turned my head toward the window. Saw gray sky. Manhattan buildings. Traffic moving below.

Everything looked the same.

Nothing was the same.

The doctor eventually left. I heard the door close. Heard footsteps fade down the hallway.

I lay there. Stared at the ceiling. Didn't cry.

Couldn't cry.

Something inside me had closed. Locked. Sealed shut.

I didn't know how long I stayed like that. Minutes. Hours. Time felt irrelevant.

Then the door opened again.

I knew who it was before I looked. Knew by the weight of his footsteps. The particular way he moved through space.

Chase.

He crossed the room quickly. Stopped at the foot of my bed. His suit was wrinkled. His tie gone. He looked like he hadn't slept.

Good.

"Eli," he said. His voice cracked on my name. "Thank God. I've been waiting for hours. They wouldn't let me in until—"

"Sign the papers," I said.

He stopped. Blinked.

"What?"

"Divorce papers," I said. My voice was flat. Empty. "Sign them."

He moved closer. Reached for my hand.

I pulled it away.

"Eli, listen to me." His CEO voice now. Smooth. Controlled. Managing the crisis. "I know how this looks. I know you're upset. But we can fix this. We can work through—"

"I was pregnant," I said.

He froze.

"Six weeks," I continued. "I didn't know. The doctor told me twenty minutes ago."

His face went white. His mouth opened. Closed.

"Was," I said. "Past tense. Because when you shoved me, I hit the table. And when I hit the table, I fell. And when I fell, I killed the baby neither of us knew I was carrying."

He staggered back. Hit the wall. His hand went to his mouth.

"Eli—" His voice broke completely. "No. No, I didn't—I didn't know—"

"I know you didn't," I said. "That's not the point."

He slid down the wall. Sat on the floor. His hands went to his hair. Gripped hard.

"The point," I said, "is that you shoved your wife to protect your reputation. You held your mistress while your grandfather collapsed. You gave her a diamond and gave me a speech about how love doesn't need material things."

I looked at him. Really looked at him. Saw him clearly for the first time in seven years.

"The point is that I'm done," I said.

He looked up. His eyes were red. Wet. Desperate.

"We can fix this," he said. "Eli, please. I'll do anything. I'll end it with Karina. I'll—"

"Sign the papers," I said again.

He stood. Moved toward the bed. Reached for me.

"Don't touch me," I said.

He stopped. His hands hung in the air between us. Useless.

"I love you," he said. "I know I've been—I know I messed up. But I love you. That has to count for something."

I looked at him. At the man I'd given seven years to. The man I'd shrunk myself for. The man I'd believed when he said material things didn't matter.

The man who killed our baby without meaning to.

The man who meant to silence me instead.

"No," I said. "It doesn't."

His face crumpled.

I turned away. Looked back at the window. At the gray sky and the moving traffic and the world that kept spinning.

"Get out," I said.

He didn't move.

"Get out," I said again. Louder now. "Or I'll call security and tell them exactly what you did to me."

He left.

The door closed behind him.

I lay there in the silence. Felt the bandages against my skin. The emptiness in my stomach.

I still didn't cry.

I counted ceiling tiles instead.

One. Two. Three. Four.

Seven years.

Gone.
