Chapter 2

Karina's smile didn't waver. It sharpened.

"You want to know about Chase?" she said. Her voice carried now. Louder. She was performing for the crowd gathering around us. "Let me tell you about Chase."

She took a step closer. I held my ground.

"He calls you 'the placeholder,'" she said. Each word landed like a slap. "That's his nickname for you. The Placeholder. Because you kept his bed warm while he figured out what he actually wanted."

Someone in the crowd gasped. I heard the sound from far away.

"He told me all about your little notes," Karina continued. "The ones you tuck into his briefcase like a child leaving cookies for Santa. He throws them away at the office. Didn't want to hurt your feelings by doing it at home."

She held up her hand. Let the diamond catch every light. Let everyone see it.

"This ring?" She turned it slowly. "He gave it to me three months ago. Got down on one knee in our apartment. *Our* apartment, Elianna. The one on the Upper West Side with the view of the park. He said I was the only woman who ever made him feel alive."

My throat closed. I couldn't swallow. Couldn't breathe right.

"And that?" She pointed at my left hand. At the cheap silver band I'd worn for seven years. "That's the price tag he put on seven years of tolerance. Fifty dollars and a philosophy about how 'real love doesn't need material things.' Did you actually believe that?"

The crowd murmured. I heard phones come out. Cameras. Recording.

My hands were perfectly still at my sides.

"You're lying," I said again. But my voice was smaller now.

Karina laughed. The sound was light. Musical. Designed to humiliate.

"Am I?" She tilted her head. "Ask him yourself. Oh wait—you can't. Because he's not coming home tonight. He's with me."

That's when Grandpa Kelley moved.

He stepped forward. Placed himself directly beside me. His hand found mine and gripped it hard.

He was shaking. Not with age. With fury.

"You," he said. His voice cut through the noise like a blade. Everyone went quiet. "You are wearing a dead woman's ring on a stolen hand, and you have the nerve to bar my granddaughter-in-law from the door."

Karina's smile flickered. Just for a second.

"I don't know who you think you are—" she started.

"I know exactly who you are," Grandpa Kelley said. His voice was steady. Brutal. "You're the kind of woman who mistakes cruelty for power. Who thinks a ring makes you legitimate. It doesn't. It makes you a thief."

The crowd pressed closer. I felt bodies around us. Heard whispers. Cameras still recording.

Karina's face flushed. "You need to leave," she said. Her voice was higher now. Brittle. "Both of you. Before I call security."

"Call them," Grandpa Kelley said. "I'd love to see you explain to the press why you're throwing Chase Kelley's wife and grandfather out of an event his company is sponsoring."

Karina opened her mouth. Closed it. Her hands curled into fists at her sides.

That's when Grandpa Kelley made a sound.

A small, broken noise. Like something inside him had cracked.

His hand went to his chest. His face went gray.

"Grandpa?" I grabbed his arm. "Grandpa, what's wrong?"

He tried to speak. Couldn't. His knees buckled.

I caught him as he fell. We went down together. His weight pulled me to the marble floor. My knees hit hard. Pain shot up my legs. I didn't care.

"Help!" I screamed. "Someone help him!"

People moved. Voices shouted. I pressed my hand to his cheek. His skin was cold. Too cold.

"Stay with me," I said. My voice broke. "Please. Stay with me."

Venue staff rushed forward. A man in a black suit. A woman with a radio.

Karina stepped directly into their path.

She spread her arms wide. Blocked them.

"Stop," she said. Her voice was sharp. Commanding. "This event cannot be disrupted for a medical performance."

I looked up at her. At her perfect makeup. Her perfect dress. The diamond on her hand.

"Get out of the way," I said.

She didn't move.

"This is a high-profile event," she said. "We have investors here. Press. We cannot have this kind of scene—"

"He's dying!" I screamed. The words ripped out of me. Raw. Desperate. "He's dying and you're worried about your fucking event?"

The crowd went silent.

Karina's face twisted. Something ugly flashed across it.

"You don't get to make demands here," she said. "You're nobody. You're nothing. You're the placeholder."

She stepped closer. Loomed over me. Over Grandpa Kelley's body on the floor.

"And when Chase gets here," she said softly, "he's going to tell you the same thing."

I looked down at Grandpa Kelley. His eyes were closed. His breathing shallow.

I pressed my hand harder against his cheek.

"Someone call 911," I said. My voice was steady now. Cold. "Now."

Someone did.
