Chapter 3

The parking garage swallowed me whole.

Level B2. Fluorescent tubes humming overhead, half of them flickering. The smell of motor oil and cold concrete. My footsteps echoed off the pillars as I walked, Jase's ash still on my palms, still dusted into the creases of my knuckles.

I didn't see them until they were already moving.

Two men. Dark jackets. No hesitation. The kind of professionals who don't need to say anything before they start.

The first one caught my arm and swung me hard into a concrete pillar. The impact knocked the air clean out of my lungs. I didn't scream. I didn't have the breath for it. The second man moved in from the left, and then the blows came—methodical, fast, targeted. My ribs. My side. The back of my head against the pillar.

I slid down the concrete. The cold of the garage floor soaked through my dress. I pressed my grey-dusted hands flat against the ground and tried to breathe through the white-hot fire in my chest. Two ribs, I registered distantly. Maybe three.

Somewhere above me, one of them said something low and flat. A confirmation. A job being finished.

Then tires screamed.

Headlights flooded the column. A black sedan, long and low, braked hard twenty feet away. The driver's door opened before the car had fully stopped.

The man who stepped out was tall. Dark coat. He moved like someone who had made fast decisions before and didn't second-guess them. He said two words—sharp, quiet—and something in his voice made both men go still for exactly one second. That second was all he needed. He was already between them and me.

I don't know what happened in the next sixty seconds. My vision was narrowing at the edges. I heard footsteps retreating. I heard a car door slam somewhere in the distance.

Then he was crouching in front of me.

"Can you hear me?" His voice was calm. Not the performed calm of someone pretending. The real kind. The kind that costs something.

"Yes," I said. My voice came out wrong. Too thin.

He shrugged off his coat and wrapped it around my shoulders without asking permission. It smelled like cedar and something clean. He had his phone to his ear before I could say anything else.

"I need the Zurich team on standby. Two hours." A pause. "Yes. Tonight."

He looked at me while he talked. Not through me. At me. Like I was a person and not a problem to be managed.

I let him help me into the car. I didn't have anything left to argue with.

---

Five days later, Rafael Simmons sat behind his desk on the forty-second floor and decided he'd been patient long enough.

He'd given her five days. Five days to come to her senses, to realize that walking out of the penthouse like some kind of martyr accomplished nothing. He'd half-expected her to be back by morning. Then by the end of the first day. Then the second.

Now it was day five and the silence from her end had shifted from annoying to deliberately calculated. He recognized the tactic. Make him wait. Make him worry. Make him reach out first.

He wasn't going to reach out first.

He pressed the intercom. "Diana. Get in here."

Diana Cho appeared in the doorway thirty seconds later. Notepad in hand. Expression neutral in the careful way it always was around him.

"The medical trust for Jase Hayes," Rafael said. "Freeze it. All of it. Halt the experimental treatment authorizations, stop the ICU billing cycle, everything. Effective immediately." He picked up his coffee. "She wants to play games, she can play them without my checkbook."

Diana wrote it down. She didn't look up. "Understood."

"And when she calls—" he said.

"She'll be directed to your office," Diana said. "As always."

He waved her out.

---

Forty minutes later, Diana came back.

She didn't knock. She walked in, crossed the room, and set two documents on his desk. She didn't say anything. She just set them down and stepped back.

Rafael looked at them.

The first was a death certificate. Official. Notarized. Jase Hayes. Date of death printed in clean black type—three weeks ago.

The second was a hospital cremation record. Remains-release authorization. Roselyn's signature at the bottom, in her small, careful handwriting. The same handwriting he'd seen on the divorce papers this morning when he'd finally opened them.

He stared at the papers.

The coffee cup in his hand tilted. He didn't notice. Dark liquid spread across the documents, across the desk, dripped onto the floor. He didn't move.

Three weeks.

She had been carrying her brother's ashes in that urn for three weeks. She had been carrying them when he told her she was exactly the kind of woman he always knew she was. She had been carrying them when Kimberly knocked them to the floor.

He had frozen the funding for a dead man.

All the color left his face at once.

Diana Cho picked up her notepad. She walked to the office door, opened it, and quietly pulled it shut behind her. She didn't look back.
