After His Mistress Slandered Me, I Fought Back
Chapter 3
Security arrived in under four minutes. Two men in dark suits, polite and efficient. They flanked Mrs. Lawrence and escorted her to the elevator. She didn't struggle. She just kept looking back at me, her face twisted with something between rage and disbelief.
Desmond stood in the doorway and watched her go. His hands were in his pockets. His posture was relaxed. But I knew him well enough to see the tension in his jaw.
When the elevator doors closed, he turned to me.
I was still standing in the same spot. My hands were clasped in front of me. My breathing was even. I had learned a long time ago that emotions displayed in front of the wrong people become weapons used against you.
Desmond crossed the room in three strides. He cupped my face in both hands and tilted my head up so I had to meet his eyes.
"She will never set foot in this building again," he said.
I nodded. My throat felt tight.
He pressed his forehead to mine and held me there. "I mean it, Oaklee. Never."
"I know."
He kissed my temple. Then he pulled out his phone and stepped onto the terrace.
I heard his voice through the glass. Low. Calm. Final.
"On Lawrence Corp—accelerate the timeline."
I closed my eyes and took a breath.
Two days later, I was at my design studio reviewing a client proposal when my phone lit up. A text from a number I didn't recognize. A link. No message.
I shouldn't have clicked it. But I did.
It was a gossip blog. The headline made my stomach drop.
*Billionaire's Wife or Gold-Digging Ex? The Truth About Oaklee Mendoza.*
Below it were photos. Old ones. Me and Kolton. At a restaurant. At his apartment. One of us kissing on a terrace somewhere I didn't even remember. The captions were worse.
*She left him the moment someone richer came along.*
*Poor Kolton gave her everything. She threw him away like trash.*
*What kind of woman does that?*
I scrolled down. The comment section was a cesspool. Strangers dissecting my life. My choices. My character. Calling me names I wouldn't repeat.
I set the phone down very carefully.
My assistant knocked on the door. "Oaklee? Your three o'clock is here."
"Cancel it," I said. My voice was steady. "Cancel everything today."
She blinked. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine. Just cancel it."
She left. I picked up the phone again and called Sandra.
"I need you to see something," I said.
I forwarded her the link. She was quiet for a moment. Then she swore. Loudly.
"This is Gracelynn," she said. "Has to be. The photos, the narrative, the timing. It's her."
"I know."
"I'm filing harassment charges. And I'm going after the hosting platforms. This is defamation, Oaklee. Clear-cut."
"Do it."
I hung up. Then I sat very still in my chair and stared at the wall.
I didn't cry. I didn't rage. I just felt cold.
Desmond arrived an hour later. I didn't call him. His PR team must have alerted him before I even spoke to Sandra.
He walked into my studio without knocking. He looked at me. I looked back.
"I saw it," he said.
I nodded.
He crossed the room and sat beside me. He took my hand. His thumb brushed over my knuckles.
"I know who you are," he said quietly. "That's all that matters."
I swallowed hard. "Desmond—"
"No." His voice was firm. "I know who you are. I knew before I married you. I know now. And nothing some anonymous coward posts online will ever change that."
I looked down at our joined hands. "People are going to believe it."
"Let them." He tilted my chin up. "The people who matter know the truth. Everyone else is noise."
I wanted to believe him. But the comments were still there. The photos. The lies.
He pulled out his phone and made a call. "It's Knight. I need a full scrub. Every platform. Every mirror site. I want it gone in ten minutes."
He paused. Listened.
"I don't care what it costs. Just do it."
He hung up. Then he made another call.
"Legal. I want cease-and-desist letters sent to Gracelynn Watkins and Kolton Lawrence. Tonight. Full weight of Knight Industries behind them. And make it clear—if they come near my wife again, we're filing criminal charges."
He ended the call and looked at me. "It's handled."
I stared at him. "Just like that?"
"Just like that."
I felt something crack open in my chest. Relief. Gratitude. Something deeper I didn't have words for.
He pulled me close. I pressed my face into his shoulder and let myself breathe.
"Thank you," I whispered.
"Always," he said.
By the time we got home that evening, the posts were gone. Every single one. Scrubbed from the internet like they'd never existed.
Gracelynn and Kolton would receive their letters by morning.
Desmond had promised to protect me.
And Desmond Knight always kept his promises.
