Chapter 1

The divorce papers sat on our white marble kitchen island.

Jalen slid them toward me with two fingers. He looked solemn, the way he did before board meetings at his family’s real estate firm. In his other hand, he held a folded stapled packet.

"Lexi," he said. His voice was low and carefully practiced. "I know this is hard. I drew up some compromise terms. We can talk through the transition. You don't have to panic."

He braced his shoulders. He was waiting for the breakdown. He wanted the tears, the screaming, the desperate begging that would let him play the patient, generous husband.

I didn't blink. I pulled the cap off my pen.

I flipped through the pages. Page four, signature. Page seven, initials. Page twelve, final sign-off. My hand didn't shake once. The pen scratched against the heavy paper, loud in the sterile silence of our Upper East Side apartment.

I capped the pen, set it down, and stepped away from the counter.

Jalen’s rehearsed expression slipped. His mouth parted slightly. "Wait. You aren't going to read the terms?"

I didn't answer. I walked to the coat rack, picked up the small black carry-on I had packed three nights ago, and slipped my trench coat over my arm.

"Lexi?" he called out, his voice sharp now, laced with annoyance. "What are you doing? Let's talk about this!"

I walked straight to the front door, opened it, and stepped into the hallway. When I glanced back, Jalen was frozen in the doorway. The unread compromise papers were still clutched uselessly in his right hand.

I pulled the door shut between us. The latch clicked. It was the easiest sound I had ever heard.

Two days later, my phone started buzzing.

It wasn't Jalen. It was Braelynn Sanders.

She was Jalen’s former college junior, the girl with wide eyes who had spent the last eight months circling our marriage like a hawk.

First came the voice memos. I tapped one. Jalen’s low, rumbling laugh filled my ear, followed by Braelynn’s high giggle. *"Tell her you love me,"* she whispered in the clip. Jalen only chuckled back, lazy and pleased.

Then came the screenshots. Endless text threads. Pet names. Late-night check-ins. *Can’t wait to see you tomorrow, baby.* *Headed up to your place now.*

Then, the photograph.

Braelynn was sprawled across our gray sectional. She was wearing my emerald green silk robe—the one Jalen had bought me for our second anniversary. Her legs were bare. She held a glass of white wine and smiled straight into the lens.

Underneath the picture, she typed: *Just thought you should know. 💕*

I stared at the screen. My heart didn't race. My stomach didn't drop. Whatever small, burning ember of pain had survived inside me simply went cold. It turned to gray ash.

I didn't type a word. I tapped her profile, hit mute, and closed the app. I would never open it again.

That night, lying on the narrow twin bed of my temporary sublet in Queens, I let myself look back one last time.

Not to mourn. Just to remember why I was here.

Six months ago, my flight home from a Chicago architecture conference had landed four hours early. I took a cab straight home, unlocked the front door, and dropped my keys onto the console.

The living room was dim. In the kitchen, Braelynn was perched on the edge of the island.

She was wearing my silk slip nightgown. Her bare feet swung back and forth, inches from the cabinet doors. Jalen stood between her knees, unbuttoning his collar with one hand while pouring a vintage cabernet with the other.

When the keys hit the table, Jalen turned. He didn't drop the bottle. He didn't blush.

His jaw instantly tightened into anger.

"What are you doing here?" he sneered. "You're supposed to land at midnight."

"Jalen," I whispered, the air leaving my lungs. "Who is this?"

"Don't start with me, Lexi," he snapped, stepping around the counter. His eyes were cold and furious. "You have a filthy, suspicious mind. Braelynn had an emergency. A pipe burst in her building. She needed a place to shower and change. It's not my fault she didn't have clothes."

He drove her home twenty minutes later. He didn't come back until three in the morning. I spent those hours sitting in the dark living room, staring at the empty wine glass on the island.

That was the night I realized I was married to a stranger. He had traded my trust for an ego trip, and he expected my silence as a reward.

I swore to myself I would never give him that silence again.

By Friday, I signed the lease on a one-bedroom in Brooklyn Heights.

The building was old brick with ivy crawling up the side. The apartment had high ceilings, scarred oak floors, and three massive windows facing the river.

Over the weekend, I moved in. I didn't bring anything from the old apartment except my clothes and my drafting tools. I bought secondhand wooden bookshelves from a shop down the street. I hung macramé plant holders near the glass, filling them with golden pothos and string-of-pearls. In the corner by the widest window, I set up an armchair angled straight toward the morning sun.

On Monday morning, I woke up early.

The sky over the East River was pale pink and gold. I brewed a pot of dark roast, poured it into a ceramic mug, and walked over to the window.

In the Upper East Side place, Jalen had insisted on heavy, dark velvet drapes. He said sunlight ruined the artwork. For years, I had lived in an expensive shadow.

Now, the light poured across the floorboards. It was bright. It was warm.

I took a slow sip of hot coffee, feeling the heat settle into my chest. The apartment was quiet, slightly drafty, and completely mine. For the first time in years, the tight knot under my ribs let go, and I took a full, clean breath.
