Chapter 4

The two security guards stepped forward. Their heavy boots squeaked against the polished floor.

One of them reached out. His thick fingers opened, aiming straight for the lapel of my coat.

I didn’t flinch. I didn’t take a single step back.

Instead, my right hand came up.

Without drama, without a word, my fingers touched the platinum band on my left hand. I slid it off. It moved easily over my knuckle. No hesitation.

I held the ring between my thumb and forefinger for one quiet breath.

Then, I opened my fingers.

*Clink.*

The small piece of metal hit the marble floor. The sound was tiny, but in the quiet room, it sounded like a gunshot. It bounced once, rolled in a tight circle, and fell completely flat against the stone.

Right at the guard’s boot.

The guard stopped. He looked down at the ring, then up at my face.

I didn't look at the ring. I reached into my coat pocket and pulled out my phone. My thumb pressed a single button on speed dial. I didn't even look at the screen. I brought the phone to my ear.

The line connected on the very first ring.

“Fifth Avenue,” I said softly. “The showroom.”

I hung up before the person on the other end could reply. I slid the phone back into my coat.

Antonella let out a sharp, nervous laugh. “What was that? Who did you call? The police? Go ahead! Tell them you vandalized a five-million-dollar car!”

She turned back to the two guards and stamped her foot. “Don’t just stand there! I said take her clothes off! Strip her!”

The guard shook his head, clearing his daze. His thick hand reached out again, only inches from my chest.

Then, he stopped.

He didn't stop because of me. He stopped because of something behind me.

Outside the massive floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the sunlight suddenly disappeared.

Three heavy, matte-black armored SUVs pulled up to the curb. They moved in perfect, synchronized formation. They didn't park in the normal spaces. They pulled right onto the sidewalk, blocking the dealership’s main entrance completely.

The heavy doors opened at the exact same second.

Men stepped out. They were tall, broad, and dressed in sharp, tailored charcoal coats. No logos. No bright badges. But every single one of them had a coiled black earpiece tucked behind his collar. They moved with absolute, terrifying discipline.

Inside the showroom, the air instantly changed.

A woman standing near the window dropped her designer purse. It hit the floor with a dull thud. She didn't pick it up. Her face went bone white. She grabbed her husband’s arm so hard her knuckles turned chalky.

“Look at the cut of their coats,” she whispered. Her voice was shaking. “Look at the earpieces. Oh God. Richard, look.”

A man in a tailored navy suit pulled out his phone. His hands trembled as he typed a quick search. He stared at the screen, read two short sentences, and his jaw dropped open. He almost fumbled the phone right out of his grip.

“It’s Bennett,” he muttered under his breath. The color drained from his lips. “Freya Bennett.”

The name drifted through the crowd like a freezing wind.

*The Reaper.*

*The underground boss.*

*Why is she here?*

The whispers died the second they started. Terror choked the room. In New York, everyone with real money knew that name. You didn't cross Freya Bennett. You didn't even look her in the eye. When she moved, people vanished. Entire hedge funds packed up and fled the country overnight just to stay out of her reach.

And now, her enforcers were surrounding the building.

Inside the showroom, the two guards froze in place. Their hands hung in midair, six inches from my coat. Their instincts kicked in, completely overriding Antonella’s orders. They slowly pulled their hands back and stepped away from me, heads ducked.

Sebastian felt the shift too.

For the first time all morning, his arms uncrossed. He stood up straight, his lazy slouch disappearing. His brows pulled together as he stared at the black trucks outside. The smug, unbothered smirk on his face flickered, replaced by deep confusion.

Beside him, Rafael Voss had gone completely still.

The arrogant dealership manager didn’t look so confident anymore. His bright, fake smile was entirely gone. He stared at the men outside, his throat bobbing as he swallowed hard. His fingers twitched against the seams of his gray trousers.

Antonella’s eyes darted between the window and Sebastian.

She felt the silence. She saw the fear on everyone's faces. The cruel, giddy glow on her cheeks began to fade. Her lips parted, her practiced smile cracking right down the middle.

“Seb?” she whispered. Her voice didn't have that sweet, mocking edge anymore. It sounded small. Weak. “Seb, what’s going on? Who are those people?”

Sebastian didn't answer her. He didn't even glance at her.

His eyes were locked on the front glass doors.

The heavy silence pressed down on the showroom like a concrete slab. Nobody laughed. Nobody whispered. Nobody dared to take a breath.

The whole room was frozen, waiting for the door to open.
