Chapter 3

Gracelynn came home on the fourth day, wrapped in the blanket I'd made her before she was even born, and she screamed the whole way up the driveway.

Not cried. Screamed. A raw, tearing sound that didn't stop until I got her inside and rocked her in the dark nursery for two hours straight, my broken sleep schedule now a joke I didn't have the energy to laugh at.

The bottle was the problem. Any bottle. The second the nipple touched her lips, her whole body went rigid, and she'd throw her head back and wail like I was hurting her. I tried three different formulas. I tried warming it more, warming it less. I tried feeding her in the rocking chair, in the sling, in the bath. Nothing worked. She'd take maybe an ounce, then arch away from me, red-faced, shaking.

I called Dr. Halloway's office myself. I didn't wait for Brandon.

"She needs an evaluation," the pediatrician told me over the phone, her voice careful in the way doctors get when they're trying not to alarm you and failing. "I want her seen by a feeding specialist. And given the ingestion event, a developmental pediatrician too. Sooner is better here."

I wrote both names down on a legal pad I kept in the diaper bag. Dr. Anh Pham. Dr. Correy Wallace. I circled them twice.

"I'll need Brandon's authorization for the referrals," the scheduler said. "He's the primary on the policy."

Of course he was.

I brought it to him that night, printed and stapled, the way you'd bring a contract to someone who only respected paper.

"I need you to sign off on these referrals," I said.

He barely looked up from his phone. "Send it to my assistant. I'll get to it."

"She's not eating, Brandon."

"I heard you the first time." He finally looked at me, and something in his face had gone smooth and closed, the way it always did now when I brought him anything that wasn't about Danna. "I have a board call this week. And next week. It's a scheduling thing."

"A scheduling thing," I repeated.

"I'll get to it, Anna."

He didn't get to it. Not that week. Not the next.

In the meantime, Danna moved a chaise longue into the sitting room off our bedroom — our bedroom — and hung two of her own framed photographs on the wall Brandon and I had picked out our wedding portrait for. Nobody asked me if that was fine. Nobody asked me anything anymore.

I opened my document that night and added two lines under the date. *Referral request submitted. Delayed — cited scheduling.* Then, a week later, the same line again. I was starting to notice the rhythm of my own handwriting when I typed those entries, how flat and even it stayed no matter what I was cataloguing.

The wire transfer, I found by accident.

I was paying the gardener's invoice through the household account, half-asleep at the kitchen island, when I saw it. $1,200,000. Outgoing. Danna M. Griffin. Memo line: *Bellevue — closing.*

I sat very still for a moment, the way you do when you've stepped on something sharp and you're waiting to feel how bad it is.

Then I took out my phone and photographed the screen. I zoomed in on the account number, the routing number, the date. My hands were steadier than I expected.

The envelope was on the counter the next morning, careless, half-open, the way things always were when Danna assumed no one in this house looked closely at anything. A deed. Property address in Bellevue. A reference number in the corner.

I locked myself in the bathroom, ran the tap so it would sound like I was just washing my face, and searched the county property registry on my phone. Grantee: Danna M. Griffin. Purchase price: matched, almost to the dollar, the wire I'd seen the night before.

Community funds. Our money. Four years of my name meaning nothing on paper, and yet somehow it was still my money too, wasn't it — under Washington law, under everything I'd studied and buried and told myself didn't matter anymore.

I added it to the file. I didn't sleep.

The pharmacy test, I bought two towns over, cash only, baseball cap low over my face like I was the one doing something wrong.

Six weeks.

I sat in my car in that parking lot for forty minutes with the test face-down on the passenger seat, engine off, hands in my lap. I let myself imagine it for exactly as long as I could stand to — a baby who didn't know yet what house it was being born into, what its mother had already stopped being able to protect. I imagined telling Brandon. I imagined his face doing something soft, something like it used to, years ago, before Danna's name meant anything at all.

Then I imagined his face doing nothing.

I got out, walked two blocks, and dropped the box at the bottom of a public trash bin outside a coffee shop I'd never been to before and would never go to again.

I drove home. I didn't tell anyone. Not yet.

I just added the date to the file, in my own steady hand, and closed the laptop before Brandon came up the stairs.
