Chapter 2

The storm raged through the cracks in the cabin walls, dusting the rotted floorboards with fine white powder. For three days, I had survived on melted snow and absolute silence. The silver still burned in my blood like crushed glass, and my right hand remained limp, the blunted fingers curled against my torn wool sleeve.

Inside me, that strange, deep resonance had gone dormant again, resting like a slumbering beast beneath my cracked ribs.

Then the wind shifted.

The scent rolled in through the drafty seams before I even heard him—pine needles, cold iron, and cedar. The stench of Ironveil. The stench of the man who had cast me aside like scrap meat on the floor of the Great Hall.

There was no knock. The crooked door blew open with a deafening crash, slamming hard against the log wall.

Alpha Ledger filled the entrance.

Snow clung to his heavy fur-lined cloak. His jaw was set like carved granite, his gray eyes sweeping the squalor of the room until they pinned me to the floor. Behind him, the gale howled into the empty darkness, but he didn't shudder. He didn't care about the cold.

Instantly, his Alpha aura exploded into the room. It was thick, suffocating, and heavy as a fallen tree, designed to drop every lesser wolf to their knees. For three years, that invisible weight had kept my head bowed and my mouth shut.

"Get up," Ledger said.

His voice didn't carry warmth, or remorse, or even basic concern. It was flat. Utterly functional.

"You've played this little drama out long enough, Scarlet," he continued, stepping inside and kicking the broken door half-shut behind him. "The patrols tracked your trail through the pass. Do you have any idea what it looks like to have an Omega run off immediately following my mating ceremony? Pack elders from the northern borders are already asking questions. They think Ironveil is unstable."

He stood over me, looking down at my pale face, my stained jacket, the useless right hand pressed against my chest. Not once did his eyes soften.

"You're making a fool of me," he said, his tone sharpening. "Gather your things. You will return quietly to the compound before dawn. You will clean the lower quarters as you always have, and you will stay out of Renata's sight. Stop embarrassing this pack."

My reputation. My life. My severed soul. To him, it was just bad optics before the neighboring Alphas.

The air in the room felt frozen, but something deep inside me went entirely still. The familiar urge to shrink away, to make myself small so the blows wouldn't land as hard—it simply evaporated. There was nothing left in me to break.

I placed my working left palm against the rough wood and pushed myself up.

My knees trembled from three days of starvation, but my spine straightened. I stood before him, tall and unyielding. For the first time in three years, I did not drop my chin. I looked straight into his cold gray eyes.

"The bond is gone," I said.

My voice wasn't loud. It didn't shake. It was a cold, flat line drawn in the dirt between us.

"You have no command over me. I want nothing from you."

Ledger’s eyes narrowed. His jaw tightened, the veins along his throat bulging as his composure fractured into ugly disbelief. A rejected Omega was supposed to weep. She was supposed to crawl, begging for scraps of shelter at the feet of her Alpha.

He took a menacing step forward, bringing the full, suffocating hammer of his Alpha tone down upon my ears. The air vibrated with raw compulsion.

"Know your place!" he snapped, his lip curling into pure contempt. "You think you have a choice? You think you survived out here on your own grit? Look at yourself. You'll be a rogue inside a week."

He looked at my ruined, trembling right hand and let out a dry, mocking laugh.

"You have no wolf," he spat, leaning down to hiss the words directly into my face. "No pack. No bloodline worth claiming. You are nothing, Scarlet. And without Ironveil, you are dead."

The words hit me like iron rods.

*No wolf. No bloodline.*

Something inside my chest snapped.

It was not an emotional break. It was a physical, terrifying rupture. Deep in the marrow of my bones, where the silver poison had pooled and festered, a barrier that had held for seventeen years suddenly gave way. A sound like thick glass shattering echoed through the hollows of my ribs—loud, sharp, and violent.

The silver didn't hurt anymore. The cold didn't bite.

A wave of suffocating, radiant heat erupted from my core. The air in the tiny cabin ignited with an invisible shockwave that blew the snow off the rafters.

"What—" Ledger choked, taking an instinctive step back. His eyes went wide as the shadows around us were violently consumed by light.

A blinding, white-gold luminescence tore through the seams of my skin.

My bones didn't just crack to shift—they expanded, detonating outward with the terrifying force of an ancient avalanche. The agony was blinding, beautiful, and absolute. The wolfsbane seal my mother had woven into my blood before she lost me dissolved in a flash of royal fire.

My spine lengthened. Pure, unadulterated muscle surged across my shoulders. The cabin's low timber ceiling cracked under the sheer height of my rising frame.

I didn't fall to all fours like a common wolf. I towered.

When the white-gold light settled into the pitch-black room, I was not an Omega. I was not even an Alpha.

I was a Lycan.

My thick, luminous white-gold coat rippled like liquid sunlight against the gloom, smelling of mountain storms, royal cedar, and untamed lightning. I stood twice the size of Ledger's gray wolf, my massive shoulders scraping the heavy crossbeams, my breath spilling into the freezing air like thick white steam.

On my right paw, the blunted claws were still scarred, the nerve damage still etched into the flesh—a permanent mark of what had been done to me. But the power rolling off my coat was colossal, suffocating, and absolute.

Ledger staggered backward, his spine slamming violently into the log wall.

The Alpha tone died in his throat. The arrogance on his face peeled away, replaced by a hollow, sickening terror. His breath hitched, his chest heaving, his own inner wolf violently cowering, whimpering inside his skull like a terrified pup caught beneath the jaws of an apex predator.

He slid down the wall until his knees hit the snowy floor, his head bowed purely on biological instinct.

I stepped forward, the floorboards groaning under my impossible weight. I looked down at him through blazing, molten amber eyes—seventeen years of stolen royalty burning behind them.

And far beyond these mountains, fifty miles to the south across the frozen pine barrens, the ancient scent of a lost princess caught the northern wind, roaring straight into the heart of the Shadowmere Court.
