Chapter 3

The studio smelled like raw linen and sawdust.

I stood at the center of the room Chandler had built for me—three walls of floor-to-ceiling windows, sunlight pouring in from every angle—and spread fabric samples across the worktable. Cream-colored cotton. Rough-spun wool. A bolt of silk I'd salvaged from a textile supplier in the neutral zone. My hands moved automatically, sorting by texture and weight, the way they used to during Ironvale's reconstruction years when I'd had to make something functional out of whatever materials we could afford.

Except this time, I wasn't building for survival. I was building because I wanted to.

The architectural sketches pinned to the wall behind me weren't pack strategies or territorial maps. They were designs. A modular shelter system that could be assembled without permanent foundations. A layered textile pattern that trapped heat without bulk. Structures built from salvage instincts, yes—but structures that were mine.

I picked up a pencil and started drafting. The scratch of graphite on paper filled the quiet. My wolf stirred faintly in the back of my mind. Not a howl. Not even a whisper. Just a flicker of awareness, like someone opening their eyes in a dark room.

I pressed my thumb against my bare neck and kept working.

---

I didn't hear Chandler enter. One moment I was alone, bent over a pattern draft, and the next I felt his presence at the edge of the room. Not intrusive. Just... there.

I looked up. He stood near the doorway, hands in his pockets, surveying the space. His eyes moved across the sketches on the wall, the fabric samples on the table, the half-finished structural model I'd been assembling from scrap wood. He didn't speak. He just looked.

I set the pencil down. "If you need the strategy reports, they're in the archives. I finished cross-referencing the border data this morning."

"I'm not here for reports," he said.

I waited. My hand went to my neck again. The gesture I couldn't stop making.

Chandler stepped closer to the worktable. He picked up one of the fabric samples—the rough-spun wool—and ran it between his fingers. Testing the weight. The texture. When he spoke, his voice was quiet. "You're using a double-weave structure. Traps air between the layers. Insulates without adding bulk."

I blinked. "Yes."

"The modular shelter design." He nodded toward the sketches on the wall. "You're accounting for variable terrain. Foundation-free assembly. It's designed for displacement scenarios."

I stared at him. He wasn't asking. He was observing. Accurately.

"You've been reading my drafts," I said slowly.

His mouth quirked slightly. Not quite a smile. "I've been paying attention."

Something shifted in my chest. Not the bond—that was still cold and silent. Something else. A recalibration. I didn't know what to do with a powerful man who listened to what I actually said. Who noticed the work I did when no one was watching. Who didn't take credit or ask what it was for.

I looked down at the fabric in his hands. "It's nothing. Just... something to keep my hands busy."

"It's not nothing." He set the wool back on the table carefully. "And you don't have to justify what you create here, Emily. This space is yours. Use it however you want."

I pressed my thumb harder against my neck. The skin was smooth. Unmarked. No bond-scar. No claim.

"Thank you," I said quietly.

Chandler nodded once. Then he left. No demands. No questions. Just the sound of his boots on the floor and the door closing softly behind him.

I stood alone in the sunlit studio for a long time after he was gone.

---

I heard about Seth's deterioration from Nora.

She was one of the mid-ranking Ironvale wolves I'd trained during the reconstruction years—a fighter who'd stood beside me in the worst battles, who'd never questioned my strategies even when the older wolves doubted. She sent a message through neutral channels. Short. Careful. The kind of message you send when you're not sure if the recipient wants to hear from you at all.

*The Alpha's wolf is smaller. Pack members are noticing. Skylar is making decisions in his name now. Thought you should know.*

I read it three times in my quarters. The moonlight poured through the windows—three walls of glass, no darkness anywhere—and I felt nothing. No satisfaction. No vindication. Just a cold, distant awareness.

Seth's wolf was withering. The bond we'd broken was taking its biological toll. And somewhere in Ironvale, he was probably standing in his study with his hand pressed to his neck, feeling the burn of a rejection scar that would never heal.

I deleted the message and went back to work.

---

But later that night, alone in the studio with only the silver moonlight for company, I found myself thinking about the clay wolf figurine.

We'd made it together during Ironvale's poorest year. Seth's hands guiding mine, shaping the crude little wolf from wet clay, laughing when it came out lopsided. We'd fired it in a makeshift kiln and set it on the mantle of the pack house. The only object in that building that wasn't replaced when Ironvale rose to wealth.

Until Skylar smashed it. Replaced it with an expensive sculpture. And Seth said nothing.

I wondered if he'd kept the shards. If he was trying to piece them back together in the empty rooms, bleeding from the sharp edges, talking to a ghost that would never answer.

Clay fired once cannot be re-fired. I'd learned that during the reconstruction. Once the heat sets the structure, you can't reshape it. You can press the pieces together all you want. They won't hold.

Some things, once broken, stay broken.

I pressed my thumb against my bare neck one more time. Then I turned back to my sketches and kept working until dawn.
