Chapter 1

The pediatric ward smelled like antiseptic and crayon wax. I'd learned to stop noticing it after the third Tuesday.

Kai walked beside me with his hands shoved in the pocket of his hoodie, craning his neck at every room we passed. He was looking for the boy with the dinosaur drawings — a nine-year-old named Marcus who'd been in for two weeks and had papered his entire window with T-rexes. Kai considered this a personal challenge.

'He did a new one,' Kai announced, pointing. 'That one has a hat.'

'Dinosaurs didn't wear hats, baby.'

'Marcus's do.'

I smiled. It was real. That's what Kai did — he made things real without trying.

We turned the corner into the long corridor, and I saw them.

Bryce first. He was standing with his hands in his coat pockets, looking at his phone. Taller than I remembered, or maybe just better dressed. The gray at his temples was new. It made him look distinguished. I hated that it did.

Then Penny.

She was crouched beside a small boy, adjusting his collar with the practiced tenderness of a woman who knew she was being watched. The boy had a visitor sticker on his jacket. I read the name from fifteen feet away.

Liam.

I stopped walking.

Kai took two more steps before he realized I wasn't with him. He looked back at me with a small frown. I felt my hand find his shoulder and squeeze once — easy, steady — the way you hold something you cannot afford to drop.

Five years. I had spent five years building a wall around that name, brick by careful brick. And Penny had just put it on a sticker and stuck it to her son's chest.

She stood up. She had already seen me. I knew because she was smiling.

That smile. I had forgotten the specific architecture of it — how it started in her eyes before it reached her mouth, how it was designed to look warm from a distance and land like a blade up close.

She steered the boy toward me.

'Liam,' she said sweetly, crouching again at his level. 'Say hello.'

The boy waved. He had no idea. He was just a child.

Penny straightened. She looked at me directly, and her voice dropped into something softer, more intimate, more cruel.

'We named him after — well. You know.' A small pause. Perfectly timed. 'We thought the name deserved to belong to someone who actually lived.' Another beat. 'Motherhood is such a blessing, isn't it?'

The corridor went very quiet.

I felt it move through me — the cold, the crack, the old familiar drop into darkness. Two seconds. Maybe three. Penny saw it. I watched her savor it, watched her shoulders settle with satisfaction.

Then I found the floor under my feet again.

I looked at her. Not through her. At her. The way you look at something you've already finished deciding about.

'You named your child as a taunt,' I said. My voice was even. 'That's not motherhood, Penny. That's evidence.'

The smile collapsed.

She shoved me. Both hands, flat against my collarbone. Hard enough that I stepped back.

I slapped her. Open hand, full contact, the sound of it sharp and clean in the corridor. Her head snapped sideways.

Bryce moved. He grabbed my arm above the elbow, fingers digging in, his face gone ugly and red.

I slapped him too.

Security arrived in under a minute. By then I already had Kai's hand and we were walking. I didn't look back. I heard Penny's voice rising behind us — the pitch of it climbing, breaking, becoming something that echoed off the linoleum — but I kept my eyes forward and my steps even.

Kai didn't say anything until we were in the elevator.

Then: 'Are you okay, Mommy?'

'Yes,' I said.

He looked at me the way he sometimes did — that old-soul look that had no business on a seven-year-old face. Then he took my hand and held it, and we rode down in silence.

In the Maybach, he climbed into his seat and reached across without looking, the way he always did in crowds, his small fingers finding mine on the console.

'Why was that lady yelling at you?'

I smoothed his hair back from his forehead. 'Nothing important, baby.'

He considered this. 'She seemed pretty mad for nothing important.'

'She did,' I agreed.

He leaned his head against my arm and went quiet. Outside, Manhattan moved past the tinted windows in gray and gold.

My hands were trembling. I pressed them flat against my knee and breathed.

Five years. Every share acquired through a shell company with a name that meant nothing. Every quarterly report memorized. Every board member mapped, every vulnerability catalogued. Fifty-one percent, sitting in a ledger on Zaria's tablet like a loaded gun with the safety still on.

That evening, Zaria slid the tablet across my desk without a word. The financials first — Johnston & Lane Corp bleeding out through bad acquisitions and Penny's unchecked spending. Then the acquisition ledger.

Fifty-one percent.

I read it once. Closed the tablet.

'Schedule the shareholders' meeting for the fifteenth,' I said. 'And make sure Legal has everything ready to file the same day.'

Zaria picked up her phone. 'Already drafted,' she said.

I turned to the window. Somewhere across this city, Penny was icing her face and telling Bryce I was unstable. Bryce was probably agreeing.

Let them.
