Chapter 2

The smell hit me before I even saw the cup. Dark roast, a little burnt, with cinnamon dusted on top. That was Karson's order. He used to get it every morning from the cart outside his old firm, back when we lived in the walk-up on 9th.

My hand froze on the coffee maker. Leland was already gone for a seven a.m. call. The kitchen was quiet except for the hum of the fridge. I stood there and let the memory take me, because fighting it never worked.

I was back in the fertility clinic on East 63rd. Karson sat next to me in a paper gown he refused to wear right, one shoulder bare. The doctor had a kind face and a folder she didn't want to open. She said the word azoospermia like it might break something. Karson's hands started shaking first. Then his face went gray, the color draining out of him like someone pulled a plug.

He didn't say anything. He just stared at his own hands like they belonged to a stranger.

I remember thinking, faster than I should have, *I can fix this.* I remember saying, "It's me. I'm the reason we can't have children," before the doctor could even finish her sentence. I remember the relief on Karson's face. Not gratitude. Relief. Like I'd handed him back his own reflection.

He let me carry it after that. Every single time.

Thanksgiving, the year after. Diane Stewart, cutting into her turkey like she was performing surgery, not even looking up. "Some women just aren't built for it, dear." The whole table went quiet. I smiled and passed the cranberry sauce. Karson sat beside me, silent, cutting his own turkey, not once opening his mouth in my defense. Not once.

I used to tell myself that was love too. Quiet. Complicated. I know better now.

The coffee maker beeped. I poured it out, untouched, and made tea instead.

---

The next memory came two nights later, uninvited, while I was brushing my teeth. I saw his phone light up on the nightstand, years ago, the screen bright in the dark bedroom. *Delaney: miss you already. today was perfect.* Underneath it, three more messages I didn't need to read to understand.

I confronted him in the kitchen the next morning, phone in my hand, my voice steady because I hadn't cried yet.

"What is this?"

He didn't even flinch. "You're paranoid, Elyse."

"I'm not paranoid. I'm reading it."

"She's like a sister to us. We sponsored her. We *raised* her, practically." He took the phone from my hand, gently, like he was disarming a child. "You're jealous. It's not attractive."

I believed him. God help me, I believed him, because believing the alternative meant admitting I'd built my whole life on a man who didn't deserve the foundation.

Six weeks later, Delaney announced her pregnancy over brunch, dabbing her eyes with a napkin, and Karson's hand found the small of her back before he even remembered I was sitting across the table.

Three months after that, two officers stood on my doorstep with a warrant. Fraud. My name on documents I'd never signed, transfers I'd never made. And Karson stood in the doorway behind them in his good suit, arms crossed, eyes on the floor. Not once did he look at me. He didn't need to. He'd already left the room in every way that mattered.

I spit toothpaste into the sink and rinsed my mouth until the memory washed down with it.

---

So I did what I always do with a wound I can't close by hand. I picked up a pen and made a list.

The gala was three weeks out, and I threw myself into it the way some women throw themselves into a bathtub full of scalding water — because feeling something sharp was better than feeling nothing at all. I sat at the dining table with the Griffin Foundation binder open in front of me, seating charts spread out like battle plans. I moved the Hendersons away from the Whitfields. I swapped two auction items because the first ones felt tired. I read every RSVP twice.

"You don't have to do all this yourself," Leland said one night, leaning in the doorway with his tie loose around his neck.

"I know."

"Marissa has a whole team for this."

"I know that too." I didn't look up from the seating chart. "I want it perfect."

He didn't argue. He just came and sat beside me, quiet, the way he always was when he understood something I hadn't said out loud yet.

I found the dress two days later. Midnight blue, floor-length, cut so the fabric draped over my belly like it had been built around it, not despite it. Understated. Devastating. Nothing loud about it, and that was the point.

I stood in front of the mirror at the boutique and studied the woman looking back. Not fragile. Not something to be pitied.

Untouchable.

Somewhere out there, Karson Stewart thought he knew who I still was.

He was about to find out he didn't.
