Chapter 5

Dylan showed up at eight on a Tuesday, no call first, like he still had the right to skip that step.

I opened the door because the camera in the hallway showed me his face, and some old habit in me still wanted to see what he'd say. He stood there in a gray coat, rain still beaded on the shoulders, and for a second he just looked at me like he was checking for damage.

"You look tired," he said.

"I'm fine."

"Can I come in?"

I didn't move from the doorway. "Say what you came to say, Dylan."

His jaw tightened, but he nodded, like he'd decided to let that one go. "Briella's condition is complicated. The doctors want her monitored. It's a lot, Estelle, for the family, for me." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I need you to be patient. I need you to understand that whatever this looks like right now, it doesn't erase us."

"Us," I repeated.

"Yes." He said it like it should have settled everything. Then he lifted his hand — the one with four fingers — and held it up between us, like a torch. "You remember what this cost me. I gave this up for you. In front of everyone. My grandfather, my parents, the whole family watching. I didn't even flinch." His voice dropped, coaxing, the voice he used when he wanted me to feel small for doubting him. "That has to mean something still. That has to buy me some time."

I looked at the hand. The scar where the pinky used to be had healed pale and smooth years ago, but I remembered the blood on the tablecloth that night, how it had looked almost black under the chandelier. I remembered how proud I'd been. How chosen I'd felt.

I looked at that scar for a long time. Then I looked at his face.

"That finger," I said quietly, "was never for me."

His mouth opened. Nothing came out.

"It was for your grandfather," I said. "You wanted to win an argument with a dead man who isn't even dead yet. I was just standing close enough to get credit for it."

"Estelle—"

I closed the door. Not hard. Not a slam. Just steady, the way you close something you don't intend to open again.

Through the wood I heard him say my name once more, and then nothing. I stood there a second with my hand still on the lock, and I pictured him on the other side, hand still raised in the empty hallway, staring at four fingers that had stopped meaning anything the moment I said so out loud.

I didn't feel triumphant. I felt like I'd set down something heavy I'd been carrying so long my arms had forgotten they were tired.

---

Sophia called two days later, her voice pitched low like she was standing somewhere she shouldn't be gossiping.

"Margaret had a dinner Thursday," she said. "Small. Family, a few board wives. I only heard about it because my aunt was there."

"I wasn't invited." It wasn't a question.

"No." A pause, careful. "Estelle — they sat Briella in your chair. The one by Margaret. The one that's always been for the future daughter-in-law."

I sat with that a second, turning it over like a stone, checking it for sharp edges. There weren't any left that could cut me. "Okay," I said.

"That's it? Okay?"

"What do you want me to say, Sophia."

She laughed, short and disbelieving. "I don't know. I expected you to be upset."

"I was upset three weeks ago," I said. "I've moved past that particular chair."

She went quiet, and I could hear her deciding whether to keep going. Then she did. "There's a birthday gala. Briella's turning twenty-six. Rooftop venue, downtown, the one with the glass walls that look over the whole skyline. Dylan's paying for the whole thing." Her voice dropped even lower. "It's going to be enormous. Every name that matters will be there."

"When?"

"Three weeks. I'm not on the list — well, I am, but I wasn't going to go. It feels wrong, honestly, celebrating her after everything." She hesitated. "But I could get you in. Quietly. As my guest. Nobody would think twice, not with how big it's going to be."

I closed my eyes for a second. Three weeks. The same three weeks Massimo had already circled on his calendar, the same rooftop I was almost certain he already had blueprints for, cameras mapped, screens counted.

"Yes," I said. "Get me in."

"You're sure?" Sophia asked. "Estelle, if you show up there, after everything — people will talk."

"Let them," I said, and I meant it in a way I hadn't meant anything in a long time. "I want them talking. I just want to pick what they're talking about."

After I hung up, I stood by my window a while, looking down at the wet street, thinking about Dylan's raised hand in my hallway, about the fear that had flickered behind his eyes for the first time since I'd known him. He'd come to remind me what he'd sacrificed. He'd left having learned, for the first time, that the ledger wasn't his to keep anymore.

It was mine. And I was almost done writing the last line.
