Chapter 2

The speakeasy didn't have a sign. Just a black door on a side street off Canal, and a man who looked at my face for a second too long before he let me in.

I touched the cut above my brow without meaning to. It had scabbed over that morning, dark and thin, like a line someone drew with a ruler. I'd covered it with concealer, but I could still feel it. I think I would always feel it now.

The room inside was low-ceilinged and dim, lit by candles in jars. It smelled like bourbon and old wood. I scanned the booths until I found him in the back corner, half in shadow, already watching me. He didn't wave. He didn't need to.

Massimo Castillo looked like a man who never rushed anything. Dark suit, no tie, sleeves rolled to the forearm. He had a scar along his jaw, thin and old, the kind of scar that had a story nobody got to hear. When I sat down across from him, he didn't say hello.

"You came alone," he said.

"You told me to."

"Most people don't listen." He slid a sealed envelope across the table. Plain, white, no markings. "Open it."

My fingers weren't as steady as I wanted them to be. Inside was a lab report, clinical and cold, full of numbers I didn't understand at first glance. Then I saw the names. *Briella Lawson.* *Fetal DNA sample.* And across from it, in another column: *Bertrand Meyer.*

Not Dylan.

His grandfather.

The letters blurred, then sharpened again. I set the paper down slowly, like it might combust if I moved too fast.

"This is real," I said. It wasn't a question, but I needed him to answer it like one.

"I don't deal in anything else." His voice was low, flat, unbothered. "I've had that sample for six days. I could have gone to the tabloids. I could've mailed it to every board member at Meyer Industries anonymously." He leaned back. "I didn't."

"Why not?"

"Because a leak dies in a news cycle. I don't want it to die." He watched me over steepled fingers, patient as a man watching weather roll in. "I want it to detonate somewhere it can't be buried. Somewhere with witnesses who matter. And I need someone the family still, on paper, considers one of their own to make sure it lands there."

"You need a face they trust."

"I need you."

I thought about Dylan's hand on the back of my head. The cold marble. The blood in my eye. I thought about Briella's mouth curling at the corner while she cried into her palm for an audience.

"Why do you care?" I asked. "What is this to you?"

Something moved behind his eyes, brief, gone before I could name it. "That's a conversation for another night."

I didn't push. I filed it away instead, the way you file away a loose thread you intend to pull later.

"When?" I asked.

He almost smiled. Almost. "That's the only question that matters."

"Then answer it."

"Her birthday gala. Three weeks. Rooftop, full guest list, every camera in Manhattan society pointed at that stage." He tapped the envelope once. "You keep this copy. I'll have others. When the time comes, you won't need to say a single word. The truth will do the talking."

I didn't shake his hand. I just nodded, once, and folded the envelope into my bag like it weighed nothing at all.

---

The days after moved differently. I went to the luncheon Margaret hosted for the hospital foundation and smiled at the right moments. I sat two tables from Briella at a Meyer charity dinner and asked her, in a voice smooth as glass, how she was feeling. She blinked, thrown by how calm I sounded, and I watched her recalibrate in real time, unsure which version of me she was supposed to be afraid of.

Dylan noticed too. Of course he did.

He caught me in the estate hallway on a Thursday, near the same staircase where Briella had thrown herself down a week before. He stepped in close, the way he used to when he wanted to say something only I could hear.

"Estelle." His voice dropped, careful, coaxing. "Whatever happens with the baby—my responsibility to it—it doesn't change us. You know that."

He reached for my arm. The hand with four fingers. The one missing the pinky he'd cut off years ago, right in front of his whole family, to prove he'd never leave me for anyone else.

I looked down at his hand on my sleeve.

Then I lifted my own hand and removed it. Slowly. Deliberately. Like taking something off that no longer fit.

I held his gaze. One second. Two. Three.

I didn't say a word.

Then I turned and walked down the hall, my heels the only sound in that cavernous, lily-scented house, and I didn't look back to see his face.

I didn't need to. I already knew what it looked like—a man who'd spent his whole life being obeyed, watching the one thing he thought he owned walk away without asking permission.
