Chapter 1

We fought for forty minutes.

Emmie went into cardiac arrest without warning. One second she was smiling through a contraction, and the next, her monitors screamed. Amniotic fluid embolism. It is every obstetrician’s worst nightmare. Rare. Unpreventable. Fatal.

We cracked open emergency trays. We pumped her chest until my arms burned. Blood soaked the sterile drapes and pooled on the linoleum. Nothing worked.

I called the time of death at 4:18 PM.

I walked out of the operating room and pulled off my rubber gloves. My scrubs were soaked in sweat and streaked with dark red.

Jared was pacing by the waiting room window. He wore an expensive gray suit, looking every bit like the sharp tech CEO he was. Seattle called him a visionary. To me, he had just been my husband.

He turned when the heavy doors swung shut. "Sydney? How is she? How is my sister?"

I looked at him. My voice was low, steady, and stripped of everything. "She didn't make it, Jared. Amniotic fluid embolism. Her heart gave out. We did everything humanly possible."

Jared stopped breathing. His face drained of color.

Then his eyes dropped to my chest. He stared at the dark red smears of his sister's blood on my scrub top. His jaw clenched so tight the muscle twitched.

He didn't scream. He didn't ask questions. He just stared at the blood with cold, empty eyes.

That silence was the first crack in everything.

In the weeks after the funeral, the man I loved disappeared.

Jared stopped sleeping in our bed. He moved his things down the hall to the guest suite. When he saw me in the hallways, he spoke only in flat directives. "Sign the insurance papers." "Don't cook for me."

He stayed out until dawn. When he finally came home, his jacket smelled of heavy floral perfume. Cheap. Sweet. Unfamiliar.

Four years ago, Jared was crushed in a hit-and-run crash. I gave him my blood. I stayed by his bedside during complications, suffered an internal rupture, and lost my uterus during emergency surgery. I gave up my ability to have a child so he could live.

Back then, he held my hand and wept. He swore I was enough.

Now, I could see the truth in his eyes. He hated me for breathing while Emmie was dead.

I didn't yell. I didn't beg. I made two clean, precise cuts. I hired an attorney and quietly filed for divorce. That same afternoon, I typed up my resignation letter and handed it to the chief of medicine.

I thought I could walk away before the hatred swallowed me whole.

Two days later, the front door slammed open.

Jared walked into our kitchen. He tossed two manila folders onto the marble island. Both were ripped open.

"Our prenup has a non-severance clause, Sydney," he said. His voice was ice. "My legal team blocked your divorce petition. And my venture fund controls twenty percent of your hospital's board. Your resignation has been denied."

Before I could speak, soft footsteps echoed in the foyer.

A young woman stepped into the kitchen. She wore a cream cashmere sweater and flat shoes. A tiny silver cross hung around her neck. Leyla Dixon. The widow of his former college roommate.

She held a weekend bag in both hands. Her stomach was rounded in a small, unmistakable bump.

"Leyla is moving into the east wing," Jared said. He looked straight at me. "She's eight weeks pregnant with my child."

The room seemed to tilt beneath my feet.

"You killed Emmie," Jared said, stepping closer. "You took a life from my family. Now you are going to keep this one safe. You will be Leyla's personal doctor. You will check her vitals, monitor every meal, and track every heartbeat. You owe me this."

Leyla lowered her gaze, looking small and fragile. "I'm sorry to intrude, Dr. Reed. Jared just wants what's best for the baby."

My fingernails bit into the palms of my hands. I didn't raise my voice. I didn't scream.

"I understand," I said quietly.

I looked down at the floor, and in that silence, I began to plan.

A month later, my hospital clinic was packed.

Expectant mothers sat on the vinyl chairs. Nurses moved back and forth with charts.

The double doors swung open with a bang.

Jared walked in, holding Leyla by the arm. She was dressed in a soft pink wrap dress that hugged her belly. Her manicured hand rested gently over her womb.

At the front desk, my closest nurse, Grace Sullivan, froze with a chart in her hand.

"Sydney," Jared's voice echoed off the white walls.

I came out of Exam Room 2 wearing my lab coat, a stethoscope around my neck.

"Mr. Stephens," I said evenly. "If you need an appointment, you have to register at reception."

Jared ignored me. He turned toward the crowded waiting room, speaking clearly so every doctor, patient, and nurse could hear.

"We don't need an appointment," he announced. "We're here for Leyla's twelve-week scan. She's carrying my baby. The heir I always wanted."

A collective gasp rippled through the staff.

Everyone in this ward knew my history. They knew I lost my womb saving his life. They knew I could never give him a child.

Jared looked right past my shoulder, treating me like a hired servant. "Take good care of her, Dr. Reed."

My right hand trembled once. I forced my fingers into a fist until the knuckles went white.

"Grace," I said, my voice dead and calm. "Prep room three for an ultrasound."

I turned on my heel and walked straight into my private office.

I shut the heavy door and turned the lock.

My knees gave out. I slid down the wood and hit the floor behind my desk.

I lifted my right hand. With my left thumb, I pressed hard into the inside of my right wrist. I pressed into the tendon, digging down until the sharp pain overpowered the ringing in my ears.

I sat there on the cold tile, waiting for the trembling to stop.

I did not shed a single tear.
