After His Mistress Framed Me, I Took Everything Back Novel Cover

After His Mistress Framed Me, I Took Everything Back

For seven years I stood beside billionaire Karson Dixon, never missing an anniversary. Tonight I chose an ivory dress—quiet, deliberate, the armor of a wife who refuses to break. Then his mistress framed me, and the woman who held herself together by sheer will shattered. No more smiling for cameras. No more playing the perfect wife. I'm taking back my name, my power, my life—and I won't stop until every one of them pays.

Chapter 1

Seven years. That's how long I'd been married to Karson Dixon. And every single one of those anniversaries, I showed up.

I showed up in the right dress. Said the right things. Smiled at the right people. Tonight I wore ivory — fitted, simple, the kind of dress that says I tried without screaming it. I stood outside Aureole for a moment before going in, watching my reflection in the dark glass of the door. The woman looking back at me was composed. Careful. I barely recognized her.

I went in.

The hostess led me toward our usual table in the back, and I heard them before I saw them. Laughter. The specific, overlapping laughter of people who already know the punchline. I turned the corner and stopped.

The whole table was full.

Karson's people. All of them. Marcus Hale with his loose tie and his louder-than-necessary voice. The Whitfield brothers. A woman I recognized from the charity circuit whose name I could never remember. Eight, maybe ten people, already on their second round of drinks.

And Cataleya.

She was at Karson's right hand. Her fingers rested on his wrist, light as a question. She was wearing green — deep, saturated green — and her dark hair was loose around her shoulders. She looked like she belonged there. She looked like she'd always belonged there.

Karson saw me. He didn't stand up.

"Jovie." He said my name the way you'd say the name of someone you'd invited as a favor. "Sit down."

I sat.

There was an envelope at my place setting. Cream-colored, heavy stock, with gold lettering I didn't need to read to understand. I looked at it for a moment. Then I picked it up.

Karson Dixon and Cataleya Harper request the pleasure of your company—

I set it down.

The table kept talking. Someone made a joke. Marcus laughed too loud. I pressed my thumb against the inside of my opposite wrist and held it there.

Karson picked up his wine glass. "We've set the date for the fourteenth," he said, to the table, to no one, to me. "Cataleya wants the Plaza. I told her whatever she wants."

Cataleya smiled. It was a warm smile. A gracious smile. The smile of a woman who has already won and is generous enough not to gloat too obviously.

"Jovie." Karson looked at me then. Directly. With the detached curiosity of a man watching a mildly interesting experiment. "We'd like you to be Cataleya's maid of honor."

Somewhere at the table, a woman made a soft sound. Not quite a laugh. Almost.

I looked at him. My voice came out quiet and even. "I want a divorce."

Karson laughed. It was a real laugh — easy, unforced, like I'd said something genuinely funny. Marcus raised his glass. The Whitfield brothers exchanged a glance. Cataleya's expression shifted into something that looked almost like sympathy. It was perfectly done. If I hadn't been watching for it, I might have believed it.

No one spoke to me for the rest of dinner.

I sat there for two hours. I ate what was put in front of me. I did not cry.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist and I did not cry.

---

In the days after that dinner, Karson made one thing clear without ever saying it directly: the divorce would happen when he decided it would happen. Not before.

Cataleya started texting me. Color swatches. Florist options. A link to a bridal boutique with the message: *Fitting Tuesday at 2, don't be late.* Each one arrived with the cheerful intimacy of a woman who believed, genuinely, that I had no choice but to participate in my own replacement. Maybe she was right.

Karson discussed honeymoon destinations at breakfast. Amalfi. Santorini. He asked me, without looking up from his phone, whether I thought Cataleya would prefer a villa or a hotel. I said I didn't know. He said I should find out.

Eleanor brought me tea every morning. She never said anything. She just set the cup down in front of me and stood there for a moment, and in that moment I understood that she saw everything and was sorry and there was nothing either of us could do about it yet.

I kept showing up. I answered Cataleya's texts. I pressed Karson's shirts. I played the role I'd been playing for seven years, the one I'd gotten so good at I'd stopped noticing I was performing.

But something had shifted. Something small and quiet, like a door that had been stuck for years finally working loose on its hinge.

At night, I sat alone in the bedroom and read three pages of whatever paperback I had in my bag. Just three pages. Enough to remember that there were other worlds than this one.

I stopped flinching when Karson's footsteps came down the hall.

I looked at myself in the mirror one evening — really looked — and saw it clearly for the first time. The beige. The ivory. The grey. Every muted, apologetic color I'd been wearing for seven years because Karson had once said, offhandedly, that bright colors were attention-seeking.

I stood there for a long time.

I thought: I used to have a favorite color.

I couldn't remember what it was.
