Chapter 2

The notice came at 2 AM. I was already awake.

The kitchen light made everything look worse. Yellow bulb. Cracked tile. Stack of envelopes I'd been avoiding for three days.

I opened the one from the hospital.

Dear Ms. Porter,

This is a final notice regarding account #4472-CH. The outstanding balance of $8,340 is now 90 days overdue. If payment arrangements are not made by October 14th, we will be forced to suspend the medication program for Charleigh Grant and postpone her scheduled cardiac evaluation.

I read it twice. The second time didn't change anything.

I spread the pay stubs across the table. Three weeks of diner shifts before they let me go. Two weeks of grocery store stocking that ended when I couldn't lift the boxes fast enough. Last night's single restaurant shift that ended with my uniform in the trash.

I did the math. I always do the math. It never works.

From the next room, Charleigh coughed. Small sound. Then her breathing evened out again, that slight hitch at the end of each exhale that the doctors said to monitor.

I folded the notice. Put it back in the envelope. Set it on top of the stack.

The kitchen window showed my reflection. I looked away.

By morning I'd registered with three delivery apps. By noon I had my first shift.

The bike was ten years old and the brakes squeaked, but it moved. I strapped the insulated bag to my back and started riding.

Seattle in October is all rain and headlights. I worked through it. Pad Thai to Capitol Hill. Burgers to Fremont. Pizza to somewhere I didn't catch the name of because I was already checking the next order.

The app pinged every twenty minutes. I took everything.

My legs burned. My shoulders ached from the bag. I didn't stop.

Charleigh was at a neighbor's. Mrs. Huang from 3B, who asked too many questions but always said yes when I needed help. I'd pick Charleigh up at ten. I'd smile. I'd say work was fine.

I'd done it before. I could do it again.

On the third night, the app pinged with something different. Large catering order. VIP delivery. Downtown nightclub. The payout was three times the usual rate.

I accepted before I finished reading.

The club was the kind of place that had a separate entrance for deliveries. I went around back, showed my phone to the security guy, and he waved me through.

The kitchen staff pointed me toward a hallway. Marble floors. Recessed lighting. A door at the end with a small brass plaque that said PRIVATE.

I knocked.

A man in a suit opened it. He looked at the bags, nodded, and stepped aside.

I walked in.

Leather booths. Low music. A bar along one wall with bottles that probably cost more than my bike. A group of people in tailored clothes holding cocktails and laughing at something I hadn't heard.

And at the center table, facing the door—

Weston Grant.

Kaeli Nichols sat beside him, her hand on his arm.

I stopped.

Kaeli saw me first. Her face did something I recognized from the restaurant. Not surprise. Satisfaction.

She stood. Slowly. Like she had all the time in the world.

"Oh my God," she said. Loud enough. "Weston. Look who it is."

The room didn't go quiet all at once. It was slower than that. One conversation stopping. Then another. Heads turning.

Weston looked up from his drink.

His eyes found mine. Held for two seconds. Then slid away like I was a stain on the wallpaper.

"Your ex-wife," Kaeli said, walking toward me. She picked up a champagne flute from a passing tray. Her heels clicked on the marble. "Raelynn Porter. Or—wait, did you ever actually marry her? I forget. She faked so much."

I set the bags down on the nearest table. Carefully. My hands didn't shake. I made sure of it.

"The pregnancy was fake," Kaeli continued. She was circling now, glass in hand, playing to the room. "Did you all know that? She told Weston she was pregnant to trap him. Then she killed his mother in a hit-and-run and tried to blame someone else."

No one said anything. A woman in a red dress looked at me, then at Weston, then at her phone.

Weston swirled his whiskey. He didn't correct her. He didn't speak.

Kaeli stopped in front of me. Close enough that I could smell her perfume. Something expensive. Something I'd never be able to afford.

"You have a lot of nerve," she said softly. Just for me. "Coming here. Showing your face. After everything you did."

I looked at her. I didn't blink.

"I'm just delivering food," I said.

She smiled.

Then she poured the champagne over my head.

It ran cold down my face, into my collar, soaking through my jacket. Bubbles fizzed against my skin.

Someone laughed. A man by the bar.

Kaeli handed the empty glass to a server and turned back to the room.

"Sorry about that," she said brightly. "Slippery fingers."

I stood there dripping.

Weston still hadn't looked up.

I picked up the empty bags. I turned toward the door.

"Wait," Kaeli said.

I stopped.

She walked to the bar, picked up a champagne bottle, and smashed it on the marble floor.

Glass exploded. Shards scattered across the tile, glittering under the recessed lights.

Kaeli pointed at the floor.

"Kneel," she said.

I looked at the glass. Then at her.

"You owe Weston an apology," she said. "For everything you did. For killing his mother. For the lies. For existing."

She tilted her head.

"So kneel. And say you're sorry."

The room was completely silent now.

I thought about Charleigh. About the notice. About the number I couldn't reach and the week I didn't have.

I thought about the neighbor who was watching her right now, who'd ask how work went, who'd smile and say she didn't mind helping.

I thought about my daughter's journal full of oceans.

I knelt.

The glass bit through my jeans immediately. Sharp and cold. I felt it puncture. Felt the warm slide of blood.

I put my hands on the floor. More glass. It cut into my palms.

"I'm sorry," I said.

My voice didn't crack. I made sure of it.

Kaeli leaned down. "Louder."

"I'm sorry," I said again.

Someone took a picture. I heard the shutter sound.

Weston finally moved. He set down his glass. Leaned back in the booth. Looked at me the way you look at something broken that you're deciding whether to throw away.

"Get her out," he said.

Then the door slammed open.

And everything changed.
