Chapter 1

I arrived at the restaurant at seven o'clock exactly, smoothing the fabric of my navy dress as I approached the maître d'. The reservation was under Montgomery—Knox's name, not mine. It had always been that way.

"Mrs. Montgomery, right this way," he said, his smile professional but warm. "Your husband hasn't arrived yet, but I'll show you to your table."

I nodded, following him through the dimly lit space. This was our anniversary dinner—eight years. The table was perfect, tucked into a corner with a view of the city lights through the window. A small vase of white roses sat in the center, probably arranged by Knox's assistant. He was good at gestures like that—the ones other people executed for him.

"Would you like to order a drink while you wait?" the server asked, appearing at my elbow.

"Just water for now," I replied, settling into my chair. "My husband will be here soon."

The water came. I sipped it slowly, watching the other tables fill with couples and families. A man helped his wife with her coat. A woman laughed at something her husband said. I checked my phone. No messages. I refolded my napkin, a habit I'd developed over years of waiting.

One hour passed. Then two. The restaurant grew quieter as tables emptied. The maître d' stopped by, his expression a careful mask of sympathy.

"Mrs. Montgomery, would you like to order? Perhaps an appetizer to start?"

"No, thank you," I said, my voice steady. "We're waiting for my husband."

At the three-hour mark, my phone buzzed. I expected Knox's name on the screen—some excuse, some explanation. Instead, it was Derek Hale, a colleague of Knox's whom I'd met at company functions.

"Hey Willa, thought you should see this," the message read, followed by a photo.

My finger hovered over the image before tapping it open. The screen illuminated my face in the dim restaurant. Knox and Noor sat on her Soho apartment floor, a fireplace crackling behind them. They were laughing, heads bent close together over a tangle of yarn. Noor's fingers were intertwined with Knox's as they worked on matching scarves. The caption beneath the photo was innocuous: "Craft night with my favorite person! #BestFriends #SohoNights."

I stared at the image, taking in every detail. Knox's smile—the one I hadn't seen directed at me in months. The easy intimacy of their posture. The fact that he'd chosen this, chose her, on our anniversary.

Slowly, I deleted the restaurant reservation confirmation from my email. I placed enough cash on the table to cover the water and tip, then stood.

"Mrs. Montgomery?" the maître d' called, hurrying over. "Is everything all right? Would you like me to call your husband?"

"No need," I said, gathering my purse. "I'm just going home."

The December air hit me like a wall as I stepped outside. The wind cut through my dress, but I didn't hurry my pace. I walked—deliberately, methodically—through the frozen Manhattan streets. My heels clicked against the pavement, a steady rhythm that matched my heartbeat.

I didn't call Knox. I didn't cry. I didn't even feel the cold after a while. Something else was happening inside me—something quiet and final.

By the time I reached our apartment building, twelve blocks later, I understood what it was. A door had closed. Not with a slam or a crash, but with the soft, irrevocable click of a lock being turned for the last time.

Knox arrived home past midnight. I heard his key in the door, his footsteps in the hallway. He smelled faintly of wine and Noor's signature vanilla perfume.

"Hey," he said, appearing in the bedroom doorway. "Sorry I'm late. Lost track of time with Noor. She had some crisis with her apartment and needed help."

I lay in bed, facing away from him, my eyes open in the darkness. I didn't respond.

"Willa?" he called, his voice softening. "You awake?"

I remained perfectly still. He assumed I was asleep. Good.

Knox moved through the room, changing clothes, brushing his teeth. Within minutes of sliding under the covers beside me, his breathing deepened into sleep.

I stared at the ceiling, the city lights casting shadows across it. In the silence of our bedroom, with Knox's steady breathing beside me, I made my decision. Not with anger or tears or dramatic declarations. Just a quiet, certain knowledge that had crystallized somewhere between the restaurant and this bed.

Eight years of waiting was enough.
