Chapter 2

The wine stain spread across the marble like a wound that wouldn't stop bleeding. I stared at it, at Marcus standing over me with that bored expression, at Zhuri's hand resting on her supposedly pregnant belly, and something inside me—something that had been holding together with scar tissue and spite—finally gave way.

I stepped away from the wall. Away from the shadows I'd lived in for six years.

The crowd parted as I walked toward the center of the ballroom, their whispers rising like static. I could feel every eye on me, every wolf waiting to see the Omega break down. Waiting for the entertainment.

I stopped beneath the largest chandelier, right in the heart of the light.

"I invoke the ancient law of challenge," I said.

The whispers died. Someone dropped a glass.

My grandmother's face went purple. "You can't—you have no right—"

"Every wolf has the right." I reached for the ceremonial silver blade displayed on the banquet table—the one used for formal pack oaths and blood bonds. My fingers closed around the hilt. It was heavier than I expected. Colder.

Marcus moved then, his Alpha aura flaring. "Ruby. Put that down. Now."

I looked at him. Really looked at him, maybe for the first time since Benedict's funeral. I'd spent six years trying to find something in this man worth loving. Some echo of the friend Benedict had died to save. There was nothing there. There had never been anything there.

I raised the blade to my neck.

"Ruby—" Marcus's voice cracked with something that might have been alarm, but I was already moving.

The silver bit into the fading mark on my neck—the one Loretta had forced him to give me in that second ceremony, the one that had never felt like anything but a brand. Pain exploded white-hot across my throat. Blood ran warm down my collarbone, soaking into the collar of my dress.

I didn't make a sound.

"I, Ruby Williams," I said, my voice steady even as blood dripped onto the white marble, "no longer recognize Marcus Mendoza as my Alpha or my mate. I sever this bond. I reject this mark. I claim my freedom under the Moon Goddess's law."

The ballroom erupted.

Marcus's face went from shock to fury in the space of a heartbeat. His Alpha aura crashed down like a physical weight, crushing and absolute. Wolves around me stumbled. Someone whimpered.

"You dare—" His voice boomed with Alpha tone, the kind that could force submission from entire packs. "You dare defy me? In my own territory? On your knees, Omega. NOW."

The command rolled through the room like thunder. I felt it hit me—felt the weight of his authority trying to force my body down, trying to make me submit the way I'd submitted for six years.

Zhuri laughed, high and delighted. "Finally! Watch the wolfless Omega crawl!"

My grandmother's voice joined hers. "As she should have from the beginning! Throw her out, Marcus! Send her to the rogue lands where she belongs!"

The Alpha tone pressed harder. My knees trembled. Blood still ran down my neck, hot and insistent.

I thought about Benedict. About his gentle hands and his absolute certainty that I was stronger than anyone believed. About the way he'd looked at me the day before he died, his eyes fever-bright, and whispered: *You're going to be magnificent, Ruby. Promise me you'll remember that.*

I'd forgotten. For six years, I'd forgotten.

I stopped trying to resist Marcus's Alpha tone.

Instead, I reached for something deeper. Something that had been sleeping inside me since the day I lost everything that mattered. Something that had been waiting.

My wolf rose.

Not the broken, absent thing everyone assumed I'd been born without. Something else. Something vast and luminous and absolutely furious.

My aura exploded outward.

The ballroom went silent. Not the silence of anticipation—the silence of wolves who'd suddenly forgotten how to breathe.

My Alpha presence filled the space like light, like weight, like the moment before lightning strikes. It was massive. Crushing. Undeniable. The chandeliers flickered. The windows rattled in their frames.

Zhuri made a choking sound. Her knees buckled.

My grandmother gasped, one hand clutching her chest as she bent forward, her own aura flickering like a candle in a storm.

All around the ballroom, wolves dropped their eyes. Bowed their heads. Even the strongest Betas couldn't meet my gaze.

Marcus stood frozen, his Alpha tone dying in his throat. For the first time since I'd known him, he looked uncertain.

I touched my bleeding neck with steady fingers, then held up my hand so everyone could see the blood—the proof of what I'd just done.

"I am not your Omega," I said quietly. My voice didn't need to be loud. My aura carried every word. "I never was."

The document inside my jacket pressed against my ribs. I pulled it out slowly, deliberately, and let it unfold in my bloody hand.

"And I am not leaving the Silverfang Pack," I continued, my eyes locked on Marcus's shocked face. "Because as of three months ago, I own fifty-one percent of it."

I held up the signed share transfer—Loretta's signature at the bottom, legal and binding and absolutely real.

"I'm not going anywhere," I said. "But you are."

Marcus's face went white. Then red. Then something beyond rage.

My Alpha aura blazed brighter.

And I smiled.
