Chapter 1

I woke up alone.

The hospital room was white. Too white. The kind of white that made you feel like you were disappearing into the walls. I blinked at the ceiling tiles and tried to remember how I got here. My body felt wrong. Hollow. Like someone had scooped something vital out of me and left only the shell.

A nurse came in. She was young, maybe twenty-five, with her hair pulled back tight. She checked the IV in my arm without looking at my face.

"How are you feeling?" she asked.

"What happened?" My voice came out hoarse.

She glanced at the chart. "You had emergency surgery. You lost a lot of blood."

"The baby?"

Her expression went flat. Professional. "I'm sorry. There was nothing we could do."

She left before I could ask anything else. The door clicked shut. I stared at the white ceiling and felt nothing. Not yet. The nothing was worse than pain because I knew what was coming after it.

Then the memory came back in pieces.

Keyla standing in my living room. She'd come by that afternoon with tea. "I wanted to check on you," she'd said, smiling that soft smile she used around Jasper. "You must be so tired carrying that baby."

I'd been seven months along. Heavy and slow and trusting.

She'd handed me the cup. I'd drunk it because refusing felt rude. We'd talked about nothing—the weather, her trip to the Hamptons, Jasper's work schedule. Then I'd felt dizzy. I'd stood up to go to the bathroom and the floor tilted under me.

I remembered the stairs. I remembered reaching for the railing and missing. I remembered falling.

But what I remembered most clearly was looking up from the bottom of the staircase and seeing Keyla at the top. She wasn't panicked. She wasn't calling for help. She was just watching. Her face was calm. Almost curious. Like she was waiting to see if I would get back up.

Then she'd taken out her phone and dialed 911. Her voice had been perfect. Shaking just enough. "Please help. My friend fell. She's pregnant. There's so much blood."

I closed my eyes in the hospital bed. My hands moved to my stomach. It was flat under the blanket. Empty.

The door opened again. This time it was Jasper.

He looked awful. His shirt was wrinkled and his eyes were red. He crossed the room in three steps and took my hand. His grip was too tight.

"Willow. God. I came as soon as I heard."

"Where were you?" I asked.

"A meeting in Boston. I got on the first flight back." He sat on the edge of the bed. His thumb rubbed circles on the back of my hand. "They told me about the baby. I'm so sorry."

I looked at his face. At the pain there. It was real. I knew it was real. That made what I had to say harder.

"Keyla did this," I said.

His hand stopped moving. "What?"

"She came to the house. She brought tea. I drank it and then I fell. Jasper, she was standing at the top of the stairs just watching me. She didn't try to help. She waited."

His face went through something. Confusion first. Then something that looked like anger. But when he spoke, his voice was careful. Controlled.

"You hit your head when you fell. The doctors said you might be confused."

"I'm not confused."

"Keyla called the ambulance. She saved your life."

"She pushed me."

"Willow." He said my name like I was a child. "Keyla would never do that. You're in shock. You're grieving. I understand. But you can't accuse her of something like this."

I pulled my hand away from his. "I want to file a police report."

"No."

"Jasper—"

"No." He stood up. "I'll talk to the hospital. Make sure this doesn't go any further. You need rest. Not police and questions and stress."

He left the room. I heard him in the hallway talking to someone in a low voice. When he came back, he didn't meet my eyes.

"It's handled," he said.

That night, after he thought I was asleep, I heard him on the phone in the chair by the window.

"Keyla. Hey. I'm sorry. Willow's not herself right now. She's saying things. No. No, of course I don't believe it. I know you would never. I'll handle it. I promise."

I kept my eyes closed and my breathing even. I pressed my fingertips to the inside of my left wrist until I felt the pulse there. Steady. Still alive.

I came home three days later. The house felt too big. Jasper had cleared out the nursery while I was gone. All the boxes and the crib and the tiny clothes I'd folded. He thought he was being kind.

I spent most of my time in bed. The surgical wound hurt. A deep ache that wouldn't go away. On the fifth day, it started to burn. By the seventh day, I had a fever.

The doctor came to the house. She examined the wound and frowned. "This shouldn't be infected like this. You've been keeping it clean?"

"Yes."

"It's severe. Inconsistent with normal post-operative healing."

She prescribed stronger antibiotics and left. That night, Jasper sat on the edge of the bed with his hand on my forehead.

"You're burning up," he said.

"Keyla was here," I said. "Two days ago. While you were at work. She came into the bedroom while I was asleep."

His hand went still.

"I think she did something to the wound."

He pulled his hand back. Stood up. Turned away.

"Willow. Stop."

"Jasper, please. Just listen—"

"No." His voice was hard now. Angry. "I've listened. I've been patient. But this has to stop. Keyla is my oldest friend. She has been nothing but kind to you. And you're accusing her of—what? Trying to kill you? Do you hear yourself?"

I didn't answer. There was nothing to say that he would hear.

He left. I heard his car start in the driveway. He didn't come home that night.

The next morning, I saw the social media post. Keyla at a restaurant, smiling at the camera. The caption read: "Dinner with my favorite person." Jasper was tagged. In the photo, there were flowers on the table between them.

I closed my phone. I lay back down. I pressed my fingertips to my wrist and counted my heartbeat until the numbers stopped meaning anything.

A week later, Jasper came home from a business trip. He was in a good mood. He kissed my forehead and handed me a small box.

"I brought you something from Monaco," he said.

I opened it. Inside were earrings. Cheap ones. The kind they give away in gift bags at events. The metal was already tarnishing.

"I thought of you," he said.

I looked at the earrings. Then at his face. He meant it. He actually meant it.

"Thank you," I said.

That night, I saw another post. Keyla again. This time she was wearing a necklace. A fire opal, massive and flawless, catching the light like a piece of the sun. The caption read: "When he remembers your favorite stone."

Jasper was tagged in that one too.

I put the earrings in a drawer. I closed it. I would never open it again.

I lay in bed and stared at the ceiling and felt the infection burning under my skin. I pressed my fingertips to my wrist.

I was still alive.

For now, that was enough.
