Chapter 3

I found Landon in the main hall the next morning. He stood by the fireplace with his father and two uncles. Coffee in hand. Laughing about something. Nyla sat on the sofa behind him, legs crossed, scrolling through her phone.

I walked straight to him.

"Landon."

He turned. Smile still on his face. "What is it, Maren?"

"I need to talk to you about what happened to Malia yesterday."

The uncles glanced at each other. Randy set down his coffee cup.

Landon sighed. "Not this again."

"She was surrounded by five children. They told her you don't love her anymore. They shoved her against a wall. She has bruises."

One of the uncles shifted uncomfortably. Randy's eyes narrowed.

Landon rolled his eyes. "Jesus Christ, Maren. Kids being kids. You're overreacting as usual."

"She's six years old."

"And she needs to learn that the world isn't going to coddle her every time her feelings get hurt." He turned back to his father. "Dad, can you believe this? She wants me to—"

"I'm not asking you to do anything," I said.

My voice was quiet. Flat. Something in the tone made everyone stop.

Landon looked at me. Really looked. His smile faded.

I held his gaze for three long seconds.

Then I turned and walked out.

Behind me, I heard Nyla's voice, soft and concerned. "Is Malia okay? I had no idea..."

I didn't look back.

That night, after Malia fell asleep, I sat in the bathroom with my laptop balanced on the edge of the tub. The estate had terrible cell service but decent Wi-Fi. I opened the encrypted folder I'd been building for two weeks.

Text messages between Landon and Nyla. I'd pulled them from the cloud backup he didn't know I had access to. Hundreds of them. Some sweet. Some explicit. Some that made my stomach turn.

Credit card statements. Hotels in Boston. Philadelphia. One weekend in the Hamptons when he'd told me he was at a conference.

Receipts. Jewelry. Dinners. A weekend rental in Vermont.

Photographs. Not many. But enough. Landon and Nyla at a restaurant. His hand on her thigh under the table. Another of them leaving a hotel. Timestamped. Geotagged.

I organized everything into a single PDF. Forty-three pages. Chronological. Annotated.

Then I opened my contacts.

Elena Cho. Senior researcher. The first person I'd hired when I joined Vasquez BioGenesis six years ago. I'd recruited her from Stanford. Mentored her. Watched her publish three groundbreaking papers.

I sent her an encrypted message.

*Elena. It's Maren. I need to talk. Can you call me in ten minutes? Use Signal.*

She called in five.

"Maren? What's wrong?"

I kept my voice low. Malia was asleep in the next room. "I'm leaving Landon. And I'm leaving Vasquez BioGenesis."

Silence.

"I've accepted a fellowship at Imperial College London. Full autonomy. Unlimited funding. I'm building a new team. I want you to come with me."

"Maren—"

"I know what I'm asking. But you need to know something first." I paused. "Everything we built at Vasquez? The methodologies. The protocols. The patents. That was us. Not him. Not the Vasquez name. Us."

Another pause. Then: "When do we start?"

"January fifteenth. I'll send the offer letter tomorrow."

"I'm in."

I called six more scientists that night. Then three more the next night. Then the last two on New Year's Eve while fireworks cracked outside and Landon drank champagne downstairs with Nyla on his arm.

Every single one said yes.

On the last night at the estate, I waited until the relatives left. Until Catherine went to bed. Until Nyla disappeared upstairs.

Landon was in the study. Pouring himself a scotch. He looked relaxed. Happy.

I walked in. Closed the door. Locked it.

He turned. "Maren. I thought you'd gone to bed."

I crossed to the desk. Set down two folders. One thick. One thin.

"What's this?" he asked.

I opened the thick folder. Turned it toward him.

He glanced down. I watched his face change. Watched the color drain.

"That's forty-three pages of evidence," I said. My voice was calm. Almost gentle. "Text messages. Credit card statements. Hotel receipts. Photographs. All of it timestamped and verified."

He looked up at me. Mouth open.

I opened the second folder. Divorce papers. Two copies.

"Sign these now," I said. "Or I send everything to your father. To the board. To Page Six. To every media outlet in New York."

"Maren—"

"You have sixty seconds."

He stared at me. Then at the papers. Then back at me.

"You're bluffing."

I pulled out my phone. Opened my email. Showed him the draft. Subject line: *Landon Vasquez affair evidence*. Twenty-three recipients.

"Fifty seconds."

"Jesus Christ, Maren, you can't—"

"Forty."

His hand shook as he reached for the pen.

He signed both copies. Barely legible. His signature looked like a child's.

I picked up the papers. Folded them. Put them in my bag.

Then I looked at him. Really looked.

"You just lost everything," I said quietly. "And you don't even know it yet."

I unlocked the door. Walked out.

Behind me, I heard the scotch glass shatter against the wall.

I didn't look back.
