Chapter 2

Theo walked into Richards Capital like he owned it.

He came through the executive entrance at nine in the morning. Dior was on his arm. She wore a white suit that probably cost more than most people's rent, and her heels made sharp little sounds on the marble.

"Morning," Theo said to the receptionist. He didn't stop walking. "We'll take the executive floor."

The receptionist looked up. Her fingers paused over the keyboard.

"Mr. Richards," she said carefully. "I'll need to check —"

"It's fine," Theo said. He was already at the elevator. "I'm family."

Dior laughed. She pressed the button herself.

By the time they reached the fourteenth floor, word had already gone up. I got the text from Celeste while I was scrubbing in for a valve replacement at Cedars-Sinai.

*He's at the office. Making noise. Board convening.*

I read it once. I put my phone in my locker. I turned on the water and began washing my hands.

The valve replacement took four hours. The patient was seventy-three. She had grandchildren waiting in the family room. I closed the incision in layers, slowly, the way my professors had taught me. Skin to fascia. Fascia to muscle. Every stitch placed exactly where it needed to be.

When I came out, Celeste had sent three more messages.

I didn't open them until I was in my car.

***

Theo had called a meeting.

That's what the senior staff told the board later. He had walked into the conference room, Dior beside him, and announced he was "taking a more active role in the family business." He wanted an office on the executive floor. He wanted his name on the door. He wanted the quarterly reports sent to him first.

"I've been in London finishing my degree," he said. "But I'm back now. Time to step up."

One of the senior VPs — a man named Gerald who had worked for my father — asked, very politely, if Theo had reviewed the shareholder structure.

Theo waved a hand. "My parents founded this company. I'm the heir. That's all the structure I need."

Dior smiled. She was sitting in one of the leather chairs, legs crossed, looking at her nails.

"Babe," she said, "you're so good at this."

Gerald looked at the general counsel.

The general counsel opened her briefcase.

She placed a single document on the table.

"This," she said, "is the current shareholder registry for Richards Capital."

Theo glanced at it. Then he picked it up.

He read it once. Then again.

Dior leaned over his shoulder. Her smile flickered.

"What is that?" she said.

The general counsel folded her hands.

"Isabelle Dixon," she said, "holds sixty-two percent of Richards Capital through the Dixon family estate. She has held majority control since her parents' deaths. She is, legally and financially, your employer."

The room went quiet.

Theo set the paper down. His fingers touched the collar of his shirt.

"That's —" He stopped. "That's not possible."

"It's a matter of public record," the general counsel said. "Your parents retained a thirty percent stake. The remaining eight percent is distributed among early investors. Ms. Dixon has never exercised her voting rights aggressively, which is why the board has operated with relative autonomy. But the structure has always been clear."

Dior stood up. Her chair scraped.

"This is insane," she said. Her voice was too loud. "She's his wife. She works for him."

Gerald looked at her.

"No," he said. "He works for her."

Theo's face had gone very still. He picked up the document again. He stared at my name.

Dior grabbed her purse.

"We're leaving," she said.

Theo didn't move.

She said his name twice before he stood.

They left through the executive entrance. No one said goodbye.

***

I got the full summary from Celeste that night.

I read it at my kitchen table with a glass of water and the same dish towel I had used to dry my hands the morning I stopped crying.

The document was thorough. It included timestamps. It included direct quotes.

I read Theo's voice asking for an office.

I read Dior's voice calling the shareholder registry insane.

I read Gerald's reply.

I closed the file.

I sat there for a long time.

Then I stood up. I washed my glass. I folded the towel.

Tomorrow I had a coronary bypass scheduled for six AM. The patient was fifty-one. He had two daughters and a wife who held his hand in pre-op and cried when she thought no one was looking.

I went to bed.

I did not dream about Theo.

***

Two weeks later, I saw them in a parking garage.

I had finished a fourteen-hour shift. I was walking to my car in the structure behind the Beverly Hills Hotel. I heard voices on the level below.

One of them was crying.

I stopped.

"I can't keep doing this," Dior said. Her voice echoed off the concrete. "My dad cut me off. Do you understand? I have nothing."

"Babe —"

"Don't 'babe' me. I need money, Theo. Real money. Not your mom's credit card. Not some allowance. I need —"

Her voice broke.

I stood very still.

"I thought your family had billions," Theo said. He sounded tired.

"We did," Dior said. "Before the lawsuits. Before the feds started asking questions. It's all frozen. Everything. I have nothing."

There was a long silence.

"So that's what this is," Theo said quietly. "You need me because —"

"No." Her voice turned sharp. "No. I love you. But I also need — I need stability. I need —"

She didn't finish.

I walked back to the stairwell. I took the stairs down one level. I got in my car.

I sat there with my hands on the wheel.

Mutual financial dependency dressed in romantic language.

That's what I had just heard.

That's what their epic love actually was.

I started the engine.

I drove home.

I did not tell anyone what I had heard.

I didn't need to.

The truth was already eating them alive.
