Chapter 1

The tray slipped from my hands at 11:42 on a Friday night, the exact second Wyatt’s real scent hit the back of my throat.

It was not the faded cedar of a rankless stray. It was dark pine, iron, and suffocating Alpha command—a crushing weight that made the hair on my arms stand up. The heavy silver tray clattered against the VIP mezzanine railing, sending champagne flutes smashing across the floor.

I looked over the edge.

Wyatt stood at the center of the ceremonial floor below, wrapped in tailored charcoal and radiating an aura so hot it felt like a furnace. He was smiling down at Skylar Torres. The rogue she-wolf knelt before him in cream silk, her neck bared. Wyatt lifted a moonstone-studded collar and fastened the clasp around her throat with steady fingers.

"Witness this," Wyatt announced, his voice carrying effortlessly to the visiting Alphas ringing the hall. "I claim Skylar Torres as the future Luna of the Ironveil Pack."

My mate mark—bare and unbitten for five years—turned violently cold. It felt like someone had scooped a hollow out of my collarbone and packed it with dry ice.

Wyatt glanced up. His grey eyes found mine through the dim club lighting. There was no guilt in his face. No surprise. Just cold, quiet assessment.

Five years of scraping shift work to pay his rent collapsed into ash. He was never poor. He was never weak. He was the hidden Alpha of Ironveil, and he had hidden our bond behind black-market suppressants while I worked myself to the bone.

In my chest, something snapped with the violent crack of splintering bone.

My dormant wolf—silent since I was fifteen—tore awake. She did not whine. She did not whimper. A jagged, furious snarl ripped through my lungs, so loud in my head it doubled my vision. Heat slammed through my veins, incinerating the numbness.

*He lied,* she snarled, clawing at my ribcage. *He caged us. He is not worth one more breath of grief—he is worth a reckoning.*

I pressed my left thumb hard into the pulse point of my wrist, forcing my breath to slow. I gripped the cold brass rail until my knuckles went white, turned on my heel, and walked into the service stairwell before anyone could look up and see me bleed.

I caught him five minutes later in the concrete corridor behind the dressing rooms.

"How long?" I asked. My voice did not shake.

Wyatt paused, smoothing his cuffs. He looked at me with the same calm, patronizing patience he had used for half a decade. "Don't make a scene, Arabella. You're smarter than that."

"You're the Alpha."

"I am," he said smoothly. "And tomorrow night, the five-year legal clause closes. Your grandfather’s borderlands formally merge into Ironveil territory. You ran out the clock for me. Be grateful I kept you fed and gave you a roof."

The disgust came up like acid. "I, Arabella Hayes, reject you, Wyatt—"

"Quiet."

The Alpha tone hit me like a solid wall of lead. The invisible command wrapped around my windpipe, slamming my jaw shut and driving me half an inch into the floorboards.

My inner wolf reared up, baring silver fangs against the crushing mental pressure, refusing to bow. I held his gaze, blood pounding in my temples.

Wyatt stepped closer, leaning in until his breath stirred my hair. "Speak another syllable of that vow, and I cancel your mother’s wolfsbane treatments before sunrise. Her next dose is in forty-eight hours. Let's see how Diana breathes without the pack Healer."

He released the tone. Air rushed back into my lungs.

He patted my shoulder once, like checking a lock, and walked out toward the applause in the hall.

I didn't cry on the drive back.

In our small basement room at the edge of the pack grounds, my mother lay under a wool blanket. Her skin was the dull grey of ash, her breaths thin and rattling. Wolfsbane poisoning had eaten her lungs for six years, and Wyatt held the only antidote vials in the county.

I sat at the rickety wooden table and pulled out my black ledger. For five years, I had written down every dollar I earned at the lounge, every overtime hour, every cent poured into Diana's medical bills.

*Find another way,* my wolf urged, pacing restless circles in my blood. *We are not his cattle.*

My hands were trembling, but I picked up a pencil. I flipped the ledger to the cardboard back cover and began writing down the names and frequencies of independent Healers across the river boundary. I would not beg him. I would buy her out.

At 5:00 a.m., the gray dawn crept over the windowsill. I slipped into the hallway and dialed Marcus Bellweather, the pack’s chief Healer.

"Arabella?" Marcus’s voice was rough with sleep.

"Marcus," I whispered. "Can Diana’s treatments be moved? An outside clinic. Off the pack grid."

The line went dead silent for five full seconds.

"Pack medicine is tied directly to the Alpha's terminal," Marcus said, his voice dropping an octave, tense and hushed. "Any transfer request flags Wyatt's desk in seconds." He paused, breathing hard. "Listen to me. I’ve handled Diana's charts for five years. Things... don't match up. The dosage reports don't match the symptoms. Be careful, Arabella."

The line clicked off.

My wolf snapped her head up. *He knows something. That is a card he just handed us.*

I folded the paper with Marcus's private frequency, shoved it deep into the hem of my boot, and walked up the stone stairs toward Wyatt’s study.

I reached the second floor just as his study door cracked open, his voice cutting clearly through the corridor:

"Tell the decorators the Mark Ceremony starts at eight sharp. And make sure Diana Hayes is placed right beside the platform stairs."
