Chapter 3

Eleanor didn't move for a long moment. She just stood there, one hand on the wall, staring at her son like she was seeing a stranger wearing his face.

"How long?" she said. Her voice was quiet. That was worse than shouting.

Douglas straightened up, buttoning his jacket like that would fix anything. "Mother, it's not what it looks like."

"It looks like my son has a child with another woman while his wife buried their daughter alone." She said it flat, no rise in her voice at all. "Tell me I'm wrong."

He didn't answer. That was the answer.

Eleanor turned to Magnolia next. Magnolia had pulled her blouse closed by then, the baby fussing against her shoulder. She opened her mouth—to explain, to charm, to do whatever she always did—but Eleanor's look stopped her cold. I'd never seen anything like it. Pure contempt, no heat in it at all, just ice. Magnolia actually stepped back, like the look had physically pushed her.

Then Eleanor looked at me.

I braced myself. I thought she'd be angry at me too, somehow, the way people twist things when they're in pain. But she wasn't. Her eyes were wet, and something in her face cracked open—grief, and under it, something that looked almost like an apology, though for what, I didn't know. Like she was sorry for all of us. Like she already knew there was no fixing what had just broken.

She didn't say another word. She turned, walked to the elevator, her heels sharp against the marble, and left.

Twenty minutes later, my phone rang. I didn't know yet. I was still standing in the living room, Magnolia gone into the guest bathroom, the baby crying somewhere down the hall, Douglas pacing by the window with his hands laced behind his neck like a man trying to hold his own head on.

It was Douglas who told me. He came back into the room holding his own phone, his face gray.

"She's dead," he said. "My mother. Car accident. FDR Drive."

I sat down hard on the arm of the sofa. "Oh my God."

He wasn't looking at me. He was looking at nothing. "She ran a red light. A truck hit her." His voice shook, and for one second I almost went to him, old habit, muscle memory of comfort.

Then he said, "This is your fault."

I stopped. "What?"

"If you hadn't made a scene—if you'd just known your place and kept your mouth shut—she wouldn't have been upset. She wouldn't have left like that." His voice cracked on the last word, but the accusation didn't waver. "You did this."

I stood there holding the phone against my ear in our kitchen, and something in me went very still and very clear. Not sad. Not even angry anymore. Just clear.

"Douglas," I said, "you had a baby with my best friend. You hid it for a year. And somehow, in your head, I'm the one who killed your mother."

He didn't answer that. He just hung up.

I stood there a long time after the line went dead, and I understood something I hadn't let myself understand before. There was no truth in this marriage. There never had been. And there was no justice waiting for me inside it either. If I wanted anything back—my name, my dignity, my life—I was going to have to go get it myself.

So three days later, I went to the courthouse alone.

I didn't tell Douglas. I put on a gray coat, took a cab downtown, and stood in line behind a woman arguing about a parking ticket. When it was my turn, I gave the clerk my name and Douglas's, and asked for the forms to file for divorce.

She typed for a while. Frowned. Typed again.

"I'm not finding a marriage record," she said. "Can you confirm the date and county?"

I gave it to her. She typed again, longer this time.

"Ma'am, there's no marriage license on file for a Raina Stone and a Douglas Burke. Anywhere in the state."

"That's not possible," I said. My voice came out steadier than I felt. "I have a certificate. I had a ceremony. Two hundred guests. I've worn this ring for six years." I held up my hand like that would prove anything.

She looked at me the way people look at something breakable. "I understand this is upsetting. But whatever document you have, it isn't registered with the state. What I do see"—she turned her screen slightly, like she didn't want to say it out loud—"is a marriage on file between a Douglas Burke and a Magnolia Riley. Filed nine years ago. No dissolution recorded. That marriage is still active."

The room tilted. I heard myself say, very quietly, "That's impossible."

"I'm sorry," she said, and she sounded like she meant it. "Legally speaking, Mr. Burke's wife is Magnolia Riley. Whatever ceremony you had—it wasn't legal. You were never his wife."

I stood at that counter and felt the last solid thing under my feet give way. Six years. A dead daughter. A funeral I paid for. And in the eyes of the law, in the eyes of the entire state of New York, I had never been anything but the other woman.
