Chapter 2

I couldn't sleep. How could I? The image of Ethan's hand on Rebecca's pregnant belly burned behind my eyelids every time I closed them. Luna whimpered restlessly in my mind, our shared pain a constant ache that no healing ability could mend.

As dawn broke, a sharp knock rattled my door—not our door anymore, but the guest room I'd retreated to after last night's revelation.

"The Alpha requests your presence in the Great Hall. Immediately." Delta Warren's voice was stiff, formal. News traveled fast.

I dressed mechanically, fingers trembling as I fastened my father's crescent moon pendant around my neck. Its familiar weight against my collarbone was the only comfort I had left.

"We'll get through this," I whispered to Luna, though neither of us believed it.

The Great Hall loomed before me, its massive wooden doors suddenly intimidating. I'd walked through them countless times as Luna of the Silver Claw Pack. Today, I entered as... what? A discarded mate? A barren she-wolf with no place?

The council members sat in a semi-circle, their expressions ranging from pity to poorly disguised contempt. Rebecca wasn't present—small mercies. Ethan stood at the center, tall and imposing in his ceremonial Alpha attire, his face a mask of cold determination.

"Olivia Bennett," he announced as I entered, using my maiden name already. "The council has been informed of my decision."

I lifted my chin, refusing to show weakness before these wolves who had once respected me. "And what decision is that, Alpha?"

The formal title tasted bitter on my tongue. Luna growled low in my mind.

Ethan unfolded an ancient parchment, his eyes glowing Alpha red as he began to read. "I, Ethan Crawford, Alpha of the Silver Claw Pack, reject you, Olivia Bennett, as my mate."

Each word was a physical blow. I felt our bond—already strained—begin to crack further.

"Our union has failed to produce the necessary heir for pack continuation. By the power vested in me as Alpha, I hereby dissolve our mating bond, effective upon the completion of the rejection ceremony at tonight's half-moon."

The council members avoided my gaze. Only Beta Mitchell—Rebecca's father—looked pleased, a smug smile playing at the corners of his mouth.

"Do you consent to the rejection ritual?" Ethan asked, his tone suggesting there was only one acceptable answer.

"And if I don't?" The words escaped before I could stop them.

A dangerous flash crossed Ethan's face. "Then you will be stripped of all titles and pack protections. You will leave Silver Claw territory by nightfall with nothing but the clothes on your back."

The threat hung in the air between us. I needed time. Guidance.

"I'll give my answer by noon," I said, turning on my heel before he could object.

I fled to the only place that felt safe—the pack healer's cottage at the edge of our territory. Miriam had been a friend to my mother before she passed, and she'd taught me much of what I knew about healing.

"I sensed you would come," she said, opening the door before I could knock. Her ancient eyes were sad as she ushered me inside. "The pack bonds are shifting. I felt it in my bones."

"He wants to reject me," I whispered, collapsing onto her worn sofa. "For her. For Rebecca."

Miriam's wrinkled hands clasped mine. "What does pack law say about this?"

"That's why I'm here. I need to know my options."

She sighed heavily, the sound of someone delivering bad news. "There are none, child. If you refuse the ritual, you lose everything—your status, your home, your protection. At least with a formal rejection, you retain your dignity and rights to seek another pack."

"Another pack?" The thought had never occurred to me. "Who would take in a rejected Luna?"

"You are more than your mating bond, Olivia. You are your father's daughter. A healer. A wolf with her own strength." She squeezed my hands. "But for now, you must consent. It is the only way forward."

As the half-moon rose that night, I stood in the sacred grove where Ethan and I had once pledged our eternal love. The pack gathered in a circle around us, silent witnesses to my humiliation. Rebecca stood at the front, her hand protectively cradling her swollen belly, triumph gleaming in her eyes.

Ethan approached me, his expression unreadable. "Kneel," he commanded, using his Alpha tone.

My knees buckled against my will. Luna howled in protest as I sank to the ground before him.

"I, Ethan Crawford, Alpha of the Silver Claw Pack, reject you, Olivia Bennett, as my mate before the Moon Goddess and this pack."

He bent down, his breath hot against my neck where his mating mark had resided for over a year. His teeth sank into the same spot, but instead of the pleasure of our first bonding, white-hot pain shot through me as he severed our connection.

I bit my lip until I tasted blood, refusing to cry out. As he pulled away, I felt something fundamental inside me tear loose—the mate bond shattering like glass.

In that moment of blinding pain, as my world collapsed around me, a strange voice brushed against my mind—deep, powerful, and entirely unfamiliar.

*Hold on, little wolf. This is not the end of your story.*
