Chapter 3

I spun around. The dining room stood perfectly empty. Only the shattered envelope remained on the mahogany table.

"I am not inside your house, Elsa," the man on the phone said. "I am parked on the street. Check your messages."

I moved the device away from my ear. A new text hovered over the active call screen.

*Annie: You always wanted to know who Mike loves? Come to the hotel. I will let you see for yourself.*

I stared at the glowing letters. I knew it was a trap. Annie thrived on these cruel games, setting up scenarios just to watch me break.

"He wants me to sign away the rest of my life," I spoke into the receiver, my voice trembling with fresh rage. "I need to look him in the eye when I confront him about the stolen money."

"He will only humiliate you further," the stranger replied.

"I have to go."

"Go, then," the man said. "I will handle the rest."

I drove straight to the Grand Hotel. My hands gripped the steering wheel so hard my knuckles ached.

I pushed the heavy oak door of the penthouse suite open. It swung inward without resistance. The scent of expensive champagne hung in the air.

"Mike?" I walked onto the plush carpet.

He stood near the floor-to-ceiling window, facing the city. His arms wrapped tightly around Annie's waist.

Annie leaned her head against his shoulder. She smirked at me. Her fingers hooked into the collar of her white silk robe, tugging the thin fabric down to expose her neck. Dark, purplish bruises mottled her collarbone, fresh and unmistakable.

All the blood drained from my face. My chest hollowed out.

Mike did not flinch. He kept his arms exactly where they were, holding her close.

"Since you are here," Mike said, his tone entirely flat, "finish signing the divorce agreement. You missed the asset addendum."

"The addendum where you funnel every dime I earned into her shell company?" I asked.

Mike's jaw hardened. "I built Nova Holdings. You just played a few piano gigs to pay our rent."

"I destroyed my hands for you!" I shouted. "I gave up my entire future so you could play CEO!"

Annie laughed. The sharp sound grated against the quiet room. She traced a finger down Mike's chest. "Elsa, you should have known by now. The first love is always more important than the replacement."

"Keep your mouth shut, Annie," I said.

"Do not speak to her like that," Mike warned. He moved forward, shielding his mistress from my glare. "She is the only one who actually supports me."

A tearing pain ripped through my chest, shooting straight into my spine. The tumor pressing against my nerves flared with violent intensity.

I gasped. My knees buckled beneath me.

"Stop the theatrics, Elsa," Mike muttered, rolling his eyes.

I grabbed the edge of the glass coffee table to steady myself. My fingers slid against the smooth surface. I hit the floor hard, my shoulder striking the rug.

The pain exploded, blinding and white-hot. My lungs locked tight. I had no air.

"Mike," I choked out, clutching my chest.

"I told you, I am not falling for this fake cancer stunt," he said. He did not take a single step toward me.

My phone tumbled from my coat pocket. It clattered against the hardwood. The screen lit up instantly with a loud chime.

*URGENT: Mount Sinai Oncology. Patient Elsa Monroe. Immediate admission required. Blood panels indicate critical organ stress.*

I reached a trembling hand toward the device. The glowing screen was my only lifeline.

Mike kicked it out of my reach. The phone skidded across the floor, stopping at Annie's feet. "Get up. You are embarrassing yourself."

"I am suffocating," I wheezed, my vision blurring.

Mike turned his back to me. "Frank!"

A massive bodyguard emerged from the hallway, his face entirely devoid of pity.

"Take her out of here," Mike ordered. "Dump her in the lobby. I am done dealing with her."

"Yes, sir." Frank seized my arms and hoisted me upward. My joints screamed in protest.

My vision tunneled. The edges of the room turned black.

Through the fading light, I watched Annie scoop up my phone. She tapped the screen twice. A satisfied smile curved her lips. She deleted the hospital alert, erasing my only proof.

Frank hauled me down the hallway. My shoes scraped uselessly over the carpet. He dragged me through the double doors and dropped me onto the cold marble floor near the elevators.

"Crazy woman," he grumbled, retreating toward the suite.

The heavy doors slammed shut, sealing me out.

I lay alone on the marble. The freezing stone seeped into my skin, chilling my feverish body. The pain swallowed me whole, pulling me down into total darkness.

Beeping. Steady, frantic beeping pierced my ears.

"Her vitals are crashing! Push two milligrams of epinephrine!"

"She is in stage three! Her body is failing from the shock!"

"We need a family member to authorize the central line immediately!"

The medical staff's voices swirled around me, muffled and chaotic. Rubber soles squeaked against linoleum floors.

Then, a new voice sliced through the panic. Deep, commanding, and absolute. It silenced the entire room.

"Who permitted you to touch my fiancée?"

A doctor stammered. "Sir, you are not allowed in here! Are you family?"

"I am the only family she has left," the man declared. "Save her, or I will buy this hospital and fire every single one of you."

The monitors blared a high-pitched warning. The pain medication finally flooded my veins, dragging me down into a deep, dreamless sleep before I could see his face.

I forced my eyes open. The harsh fluorescent lights had vanished, replaced by a soft, warm glow from a bedside lamp.

I lay in a massive private hospital bed. The sheets smelled like fresh linen, not antiseptic.

A man sat in the chair beside me. He wore a tailored black suit that looked sharper than anything Mike had ever owned. His broad shoulders filled the frame of the chair.

He leaned forward. His dark eyes locked onto mine.

It was not Mike.

"Owen?" My voice cracked, dry and raspy.

Owen Mercer. The boy from the conservatory who used to sit in the back row and listen to me play. The man who had silently watched over me for years, never asking for a thing.

He extended his arm. His large, warm hand covered my freezing fingers, offering a strength I desperately needed.

"I told you to turn around, Elsa," Owen said. "You went to the hotel instead."

My heart skipped a beat. He was the stranger on the phone.

"You came back," I whispered, tears finally breaking free and tracking down my cheeks.

"I never left," Owen said, his grip tightening around my hand. "And now, we are going to make Mike Thorne beg for mercy."
