Chapter 4

The rumors started small. A whisper at the coffee machine. A glance that lasted too long across the Shaw Technologies lobby. By the end of the week, they had shape and teeth.

I heard about them from Elias. He called on a Tuesday morning while I was signing reinstatement documents at his office.

"Miss Matthews," he said, "I've been contacted by three separate sources. Scarlet Wilson is telling people you threatened her pregnancy."

I set down my pen. "What?"

"She claims you've been harassing her. Spreading lies about the child's paternity. Refusing to accept that she and Mr. Shaw are building a family." He paused. "Two of Shaw Technologies' board members have privately suggested that Camden 'manage the situation' before it affects investor confidence."

I stared at the document in front of me. My signature looked strange. Too steady. Like it belonged to someone else.

"She's escalating," I said quietly.

"Yes," Elias agreed. "And Mr. Shaw appears to be repeating her narrative."

Of course he was. Camden had never asked me a single question about how I felt. Why would he start now?

I finished signing. "Accelerate everything," I told Elias. "I want the audit completed in one week, not two."

"Understood."

I drove back to the apartment that afternoon. My apartment. Technically. My name was still on the lease Camden had never known I paid for.

He was waiting when I walked in.

He stood in the living room with his arms crossed, jaw tight. He'd positioned himself between me and the door to the bedroom. Like a bouncer. Like I was the threat.

"We need to talk," he said.

I set my purse on the counter. "Okay."

"You're making this difficult, Autumn."

I looked at him. His hair was perfect. His shirt was pressed. He checked his watch before continuing.

"Scarlet is pregnant. That's not going to change. You need to step back gracefully. For everyone's sake."

"Step back," I repeated.

"Yes." He sighed, like I was a child refusing to understand simple instructions. "You're creating problems. People are talking. It's bad for business."

"People are talking because Scarlet is lying."

"She's not lying." His voice sharpened. "She's scared. You've been hostile since the moment you found out about the baby. She thinks you're going to hurt her."

I felt something cold settle in my chest. "I was in the hospital, Camden. You left me there."

"You had your EpiPen." He waved a hand, dismissing it. "You're fine."

"I almost died."

"But you didn't." He checked his watch again. "Look, I don't have time for this. I have a meeting in twenty minutes. Just... stop making things harder than they need to be."

I stood very still. I looked at him — really looked at him — and tried to find the man I'd loved for ten years. The man I'd built a life around. The man I'd hidden my entire identity for.

He wasn't there. Maybe he never had been.

"I'm leaving," I said quietly.

He blinked. For the first time, he looked genuinely surprised. Not hurt. Not panicked. Just... surprised. Like a lamp had announced it was moving out.

"What?"

"I'm leaving. I'm taking my things. I'm done."

He stared at me for a long moment. Then he shook his head and reached for his phone.

"You'll come back when you calm down," he said. He was already scrolling through emails. "You always do."

I walked past him into the bedroom. He didn't follow. I heard him on a call in the living room, his voice smooth and easy, like nothing had happened.

I packed quickly. Clothes. Toiletries. The few things that were actually mine. I left the candles. I left the dinner plates. I left the framed photos on the nightstand.

When I walked back through the living room with my suitcase, Camden was still on the phone. He glanced at me, then away.

I closed the door behind me. He didn't look up.

The Matthews estate sat behind iron gates in the Upper East Side. I hadn't seen it in ten years. The driver pulled through, and the house rose in front of me like something from another life. Marble columns. Tall windows. A fountain in the circular drive.

The staff were waiting at the door. Mrs. Callahan, the head housekeeper, stepped forward. Her face was carefully neutral.

"Welcome home, Miss Matthews," she said.

No questions. No surprise. Just quiet efficiency.

I walked inside. The foyer smelled like lemon polish and old money. My heels clicked on the marble. Everything was exactly as I remembered. The chandelier. The staircase. The portrait.

I stopped in front of it.

It was me at eighteen. Before Camden. Before I'd made myself small. I wore a black gown, shoulders back, chin high. My eyes looked directly at the viewer. Unafraid. Unhidden.

I stood there for a long time. The girl in the portrait stared back.

"I'm sorry," I whispered.

She didn't answer. But I felt something shift inside me. Something that had been bent too long, finally straightening.

That evening, I called Elias from my childhood bedroom.

"Accelerate everything," I said again. "I want the audit. I want the arson lawyer. I want every piece of evidence we can find."

"Consider it done," Elias said. "Miss Matthews... may I ask what you're planning?"

I looked out the window at the city lights. Somewhere out there, Camden was checking his watch. Scarlet was posting photos. The world was spinning forward without me.

Good.

"I'm planning," I said quietly, "to stop being furniture."

Elias was silent for a moment. Then I heard the smile in his voice.

"Understood," he said. "Let's begin."
