Chapter 2

Morning light filtered through the blinds as I forced myself out of bed. The hospital vigil had left me drained, but there was no time to rest. Mom was stable for now, but the doctors' expressions told me everything their careful words didn't. I needed to gather some of her personal items, photos, and the soft blue cardigan she always wore when she was cold.

And I needed my own things. Documents, clothes, the keepsakes I'd left at the condo I'd shared with Jason until he'd suggested I 'give him space' three months ago. A temporary arrangement, he'd called it. I should have known better.

The drive to Pacific Heights was automatic, muscle memory guiding me through streets I'd traveled countless times. I parked in my usual spot and headed for the entrance, punching in the security code.

Nothing happened. The keypad flashed red.

I tried again, more carefully this time. Red light. Denied.

My key didn't work either. I pressed the intercom button, heart pounding.

"Hello?" A woman's voice answered—not Lily's, but unfamiliar.

"It's Olivia Bennett. I need to get some of my things."

A pause. "One moment, please."

Five minutes later, the door opened to reveal a burly man in a moving company uniform. Behind him, the condo was in disarray—boxes stacked, furniture shifted.

"Ms. Bennett?" He consulted a clipboard. "I'm afraid we weren't expecting you."

"What's happening here?" I stepped forward, but he blocked my path.

"Mr. Ford's instructions were clear. No entry except for authorized personnel."

Over his shoulder, I spotted movers carrying boxes labeled "Bennett Papers." My father's research journals. His handwritten notes from thirty years of architectural work. The only things I had left of him.

"Those are my personal belongings," I said, my voice rising. "Family heirlooms. They have nothing to do with Jason."

"I'm just following orders, ma'am." His expression was sympathetic but firm. "Mr. Ford said everything goes to storage until further notice."

"Let me speak to Jason." I pulled out my phone, but the call went straight to voicemail. Of course it did.

I tried pushing past the mover, desperation making me bold. "Those papers belonged to my father. They're all I have left of him!"

Strong hands gently but firmly stopped me. "Please don't make this difficult, ma'am. I can lose my job."

I stood helpless as they loaded the last of the boxes into the truck. My entire life, packed away on Jason's command.

Back in my car, I sat trembling, too shocked to cry. My phone pinged with a notification. Someone had tagged me on social media.

The headline from TechBeat hit me like a physical blow: "GOLDDIGGER EXPOSED: OLIVIA BENNETT'S NINE-YEAR CON ON TECH MOGUL JASON FORD."

Below it was a photo of me from years ago, laughing with Jason, doctored to appear beside images of his wealth—his cars, the condo, FordTech's headquarters. The caption read: "Sources close to Ford reveal Bennett's calculated efforts to claim stake in his fortune despite contributing nothing to his success."

Comments flooded in:

"Always knew she was riding his coattails."

"Poor Jason, finally free from the leech."

"Lily Hart is twice the woman—accomplishing more with her disability than Bennett ever did with all her advantages."

My phone kept buzzing with notifications as the story spread. Friends from college, acquaintances, even my former coworkers were seeing this. Sharing it. Believing it.

I drove to Lucas's office in a daze, barely registering the traffic or the rain that had started to fall. He took one look at my face and cleared his schedule.

"Eleanor Vance can see us now," he said, guiding me toward his car. "She's the best attorney in the city."

Eleanor's office was sleek and imposing, much like the woman herself. She listened without interruption as I explained everything—the nine years with Jason, my investments in FordTech, the locked condo, my father's papers.

"Let me be direct," she said finally, sliding a folder across her desk. "These are copies of FordTech's founding documents. Your name has been systematically removed over the past year."

I stared at the papers, seeing Jason's signature beside amendment after amendment.

"He's been planning this," I whispered. "All this time."

"Yes," Eleanor's eyes were sharp with controlled anger. "And he's about to learn he made a very serious mistake."
