Chapter 3

I stood before the gilded entrance of the Hamilton Museum, my heart pounding against my ribs like a trapped bird. Camera flashes exploded around me, each burst of light accompanied by shouted questions that felt like physical blows.

"Evelyn! How does it feel to be left at the altar?"

"Is it true you fabricated the affair story out of jealousy?"

"Any comment on Jenna's pregnancy?"

I gripped my clutch tighter, knuckles whitening beneath my skin. The Annual Children's Hospital Benefit had seemed like the perfect opportunity to show the world I wasn't hiding—that I wouldn't be broken by Brandon and Jenna's betrayal. Now, surrounded by this feeding frenzy, I questioned my judgment.

A particularly aggressive photographer lunged forward, his camera inches from my face. "How does it feel knowing your best friend won the man you couldn't keep?"

Something inside me cracked. I turned, abandoning the red carpet for the relative safety of the garden path that wound around the side of the museum. The clicking and shouting followed, footsteps crunching on gravel behind me.

"Ms. Harper! Just one statement!"

The garden path narrowed, and panic rose in my throat as I realized I'd trapped myself. The museum's side entrance was still thirty yards away, and the press pack was closing in.

"That's enough." A deep voice cut through the chaos, followed by the sound of someone pushing through the crowd.

A tall figure materialized beside me, and suddenly a suit jacket was draped over my shoulders, creating a barrier between me and the flashing cameras. A strong arm curved protectively around my back, not quite touching me but clearly signaling a boundary.

"Ms. Harper is a guest of honor tonight. Show some respect." The voice was calm but carried an undercurrent of steel that made the photographers hesitate.

I looked up into the face of Carter Quinn—Brandon's half-brother. The outsider of the Quinn family. His expression was unreadable, but his eyes held a quiet intensity that steadied me.

"Mr. Quinn," one of the reporters called out, "are you choosing sides against your own brother?"

Carter's jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. "I'm choosing basic human decency. Now step aside."

Somehow, his quiet command worked. The sea of reporters parted, and Carter guided me toward the side entrance, his hand hovering near the small of my back without actually touching me—respecting my space while making it clear to everyone watching that I wasn't alone.

"Thank you," I whispered as we reached the door.

"Don't thank me yet," he murmured. "Eleanor is inside, and she's brought reinforcements."

The ballroom glittered with New York's elite, but all I could see were the whispers behind hands, the gazes that slid away when I looked their direction. Carter remained beside me, a silent sentinel, as we navigated the crowd.

"You didn't have to do that," I said finally, accepting a champagne flute from a passing waiter. "Won't this complicate things for you with your family?"

A ghost of a smile touched his lips. "My relationship with the Quinn family has always been... complicated."

Before I could respond, a familiar voice cut through the ambient chatter. "Carter, darling. How unexpected to see you here."

Eleanor Quinn approached, resplendent in midnight blue, her smile as sharp as a blade. Her eyes flicked dismissively over me before returning to her stepson.

"And with such interesting company," she added, her voice dripping with disdain.

Carter didn't flinch. "Evelyn is a patron of the children's hospital. I'm merely being courteous."

"Courtesy." Eleanor's laugh was like breaking glass. "A quality sadly lacking in some quarters recently." Her gaze locked with mine, the threat unmistakable. "Such a shame when people forget their place in the world."

I felt Carter tense beside me, but I placed my hand lightly on his arm. "My place, Mrs. Quinn?" I kept my voice deliberately soft, forcing her to lean slightly closer. "I believe I'm exactly where I belong—standing in my truth."

Eleanor's eyes narrowed. "Truth is such a malleable concept, my dear. Especially when weighed against consequences."

With that parting shot, she glided away, leaving the scent of expensive perfume and menace in her wake.

Carter looked down at me, something like admiration flickering in his eyes. "You realize she'll make you pay for that."

"She's already trying," I replied, taking a deliberate sip of champagne. "But I'm discovering I'm not as easily broken as they thought."

For the first time, I saw genuine emotion transform Carter's usually guarded features—a flash of something that looked almost like pride.
