Chapter 3

3: 3

I took out my resignation letter and set it down in front of Caspar.

"This is my resignation. Mr. Rodriguez, please approve it."

Caspar frowned.

Evelyn's eyes reddened. "Lucy, you're the one who introduced me to Caspar's company in the first place. Now you want to quit—is it because you think Caspar and I have gotten too close?"

"If that's it, then I'm the one who should go."

Caspar stared at me. "Lucretia, you're the one who told me back then that Evelyn was your best friend, that I should look out for her. If you're really jealous over how I've cared for her, then you've disappointed me."

"I only looked after Evelyn out of respect for you."

Out of respect for me?

So it turned out my face carried that much weight, enough that these two could work late into the night and go home together, over and over.

And even after they got home, when there were still topics left to discuss, he'd go into Evelyn's bedroom to talk.

I'd said clearly that it bothered me.

Caspar said they were discussing work, and that was something I really couldn't argue against.

Because every time I saw them, they were genuinely discussing product upgrades.

Evelyn, as product director, always had some fresh idea, and it always happened to align with Caspar's thinking.

And I, as sales director, had no new ideas—I was just in charge of selling the product.

The things they discussed, I couldn't get a word in.

Even when I did offer my own opinion now and then, Caspar would criticize it.

He said I was shortsighted, that I only fixed on short-term profit, only cared about the short-term market.

He said Evelyn was thinking about long-term growth, that the products she designed were what would build the group's core competitiveness.

Once, when I argued with them, he even said Evelyn's position couldn't be replaced, because hers was a job that ran on brains.

My position, anyone could fill—it was just running the market.

As long as the product was good, sales would take care of themselves.

For the person no one values, even breathing is a mistake.

I couldn't be bothered to keep arguing. "Mr. Rodriguez."

I put weight into it. "I'm resigning."

"Lucy, are you really going to throw away all our years of friendship, and force me out this way?"

Evelyn looked at me. "Ever since I joined the group, I've thought of nothing but what's best for you and Caspar. I suppose I gave my heart to the wrong person. Don't go—I'm the one who should leave."

"Evelyn, you're not the one who should go." Caspar rose and wiped away her tears.

He looked at my own face, streaked with tears. "I think you really do need to take a break."

He signed the resignation quickly. "Go home and think things over."

I was no longer this group's sales director—and there was another title I no longer wanted either.

"Caspar."

"We're breaking up."
