After Donating My Liver, My Husband Chose His Assistant

9.2 / 10.0
Eight months after giving Donovan half her liver, her life revolves around recovery and devotion. Fresh from physical therapy, she carries his beloved pad thai to his office, only to pause at a cracked door and hear the cold truth of his betrayal. A modern romance of sacrifice, heartbreak, and the instant that reshapes everything she thought she knew.

After Donating My Liver, My Husband Chose His Assistant Chapter 1

The takeout bag was still warm in my hands when I stepped off the elevator onto the executive floor of Campbell Media Group. Pad thai from the little place on Melrose — Donovan's favorite, the one he always ordered when he worked late. I'd picked it up on the way back from my physical therapy appointment, the one where they'd measured my incision site and told me the scar tissue was healing beautifully. Eight months post-surgery. Eight months since I'd given him half my liver and watched my entire life reshape itself around that choice.

The hallway was quiet. Marble floors, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking downtown LA, the kind of silence that only exists in buildings designed to make you feel small. Donovan's office was at the end, double doors with frosted glass panels. One of them was open maybe six inches.

I heard his voice before I saw anything.

"I can barely stand being in the same bed anymore."

I stopped walking. The bag crinkled in my grip.

"It's that bad?" A woman's voice. Young. Breathy. I knew that voice — Kayleigh Ferguson, his executive assistant. The one who always wore pencil skirts and smiled too much.

"Worse." Donovan's voice had that edge it got after his second scotch. "She's let herself go completely. I look at her and my stomach turns. I try to be understanding, I really do, but Christ — it's been over a year. How long am I supposed to pretend I'm still attracted to that?"

Something in my chest cracked. Not loud. Just a hairline fracture, the kind you don't notice until everything collapses later.

"She saved your life," Kayleigh said softly. There was no weight behind it. It sounded like she was reading from a script.

"I know. And I'm grateful. But gratitude doesn't make me want to touch her." A pause. The sound of ice in a glass. "You, though. You're everything she used to be. Beautiful. Disciplined. Someone I'm actually proud to be seen with."

Kayleigh laughed. It was a soft, breathy sound that made my skin crawl.

Then I heard the kiss. Wet. Unmistakable.

I looked down at the takeout bag. The grease was starting to seep through the paper. I set it on the floor outside his door, carefully, quietly, the way you'd set down something fragile. Then I turned and walked back toward the elevator.

My reflection caught in the polished steel doors as they closed. Sixty pounds heavier than my fighting weight. Softer jaw. Wider hips. The body I'd built through years of martial arts training, the one that had made me Hollywood's top action star, was gone. I'd traded it for a medical miracle. I'd eaten my way to donor eligibility because the transplant team said I was too lean, my liver too small. I'd done it because he was dying and I loved him and I thought that was what love meant — turning yourself into whatever was needed.

The doors slid shut. I didn't cry. I felt nothing at all. Just a strange, weightless quiet, like the moment after a gunshot when your ears are still ringing and you're not sure if you've been hit.

When I got home, Teresa was hosting a luncheon in the sunroom. I could hear the clink of champagne flutes and the low hum of society voices before I even opened the front door. I tried to slip upstairs unnoticed, but my footsteps must have carried.

"Some women simply don't have the discipline to bounce back," Teresa's voice floated out into the hallway. Clipped. Precise. The way she spoke when she wanted to sound charitable but wasn't. "It's been over a year — at a certain point, one has to wonder if she's even trying."

Laughter rippled through the room.

I stopped at the bottom of the stairs. Teresa was framed in the archway, her back to me, silver hair perfectly coiffed. She was holding court in front of a half-dozen women I recognized from charity galas. The same women who'd called me an angel when I'd donated. The same ones who'd sent flowers to the hospital.

None of them looked at me. I wasn't sure if they saw me at all.

I went upstairs. Sat on the edge of the bed I shared with Donovan. Stared at the wall. The room smelled like his cologne and my lavender lotion and something else I couldn't name — the scent of a marriage that had already ended but hadn't been buried yet.

I didn't eat dinner. I didn't move. Three hours passed. The light changed. The house went quiet.

Somewhere downstairs, a door closed.

The next morning, I drove to the *Iron Phoenix* production office. My agent had called the day before to confirm my role — not the lead anymore, that had been "restructured," but a comedic sidekick part. Small. Safe. The kind of role they give action stars when they don't look like action stars anymore.

The assistant handed me a revised call sheet without meeting my eyes. I scanned it.

Female Lead: Kayleigh Ferguson.

I stared at the name until it blurred. The film we'd spent two years developing. The comeback vehicle my agent had fought for. The role that was supposed to prove I was still here.

Gone.

I looked up. The assistant was already turning away. Behind her, crew members moved through the office, heads down, voices low. No one looked at me.

I folded the call sheet in half. Then in half again. My hands were steady.

I walked out into the parking lot and sat in my car. The sun was too bright. The steering wheel was hot under my palms.

I thought about the takeout bag I'd left outside Donovan's office. Whether he'd found it. Whether he'd known it was from me.

Then I stopped thinking about him entirely.
