Chapter 5

The taxi cut through rain-slicked streets, its headlights carving pale tunnels through the dark. Elena pressed her forehead against the cold glass and watched the city blur past, each block carrying her closer to the place she had once called home. A safe haven. The brownstone where Alessandro Leoni had first carried her across the threshold, where he had whispered promises against her hair in the small hours of the morning. Now the memory of it sat in her chest like a stone pulled from a river, smooth and heavy and suffocating.

The building loomed against the night sky as the taxi pulled to the curb. She paid the driver without counting the bills and climbed the steps on legs that felt borrowed from someone else.

Inside, the silence was worse than noise.

"Stop it. Please, stop it." She pressed her palms against her ears, but the sounds followed her. Those wet, animal moans. Ginevra's breathless laughter threading through the dark like poison smoke. They clung to the inside of her skull, burrowing deeper with every heartbeat, and Elena staggered through the hallway toward the bathroom, her shoulder catching the doorframe as her body swayed.

She dropped to her knees before the toilet. Her stomach convulsed, a violent wringing that brought nothing up. Nothing at all. She stayed there, fingers white-knuckled on the porcelain rim, and realized with a distant, clinical clarity that she had not eaten a single meal that day. Alessandro had insisted she be ready on time for Ginevra's gathering. He had not wanted to be disgraced by tardiness. So she had skipped breakfast. Skipped lunch. Dressed herself in silence and walked into that room on an empty stomach and a full heart, and both had been gutted before midnight.

The thought of her children cut through the fog. Two small lives growing inside her, dependent on a body she had been neglecting. Elena dragged herself upright, gripping the edge of the sink until the bathroom stopped tilting, and made her way to the kitchen. She ate whatever her hands found first. Cold bread. A bruised pear. Leftover broth she drank straight from the container. Tears ran freely down her cheeks the entire time, dropping onto the countertop in a quiet, steady rhythm she did not bother to wipe away.

When her hands stopped shaking enough to hold the phone steady, she unlocked the screen and dialed.

The line rang twice.

"Please draft a divorce agreement for me."

A pause. Brief and knowing. Her best friend, a lawyer whose reputation in Family legal circles was built on discretion and an iron spine, did not ask why. She already knew. She had known for longer than Elena had been willing to admit.

"Alright."

The papers arrived the following morning, slipped beneath the front door in a plain manila envelope sealed with red wax. Elena read every clause twice, then folded them and placed them inside the lining of her coat.

It was noon when Alessandro came home.

He swept through the front door with the easy confidence of a man who believed the world rearranged itself around his convenience. In his hand he carried a bouquet of white lilies, their petals luminous and untouched, the kind of flowers one brought to an altar or a grave. He twisted the brass doorknob and stepped into the dining room, and the sight of Elena sitting alone at the long table with a plate of food before her made him stop mid-stride.

She did not look up.

He set the lilies on the table between them. Her favorite flowers. A peace offering calibrated with the precision of a man who had learned which gestures kept his wife compliant. Elena glanced at the bouquet, then moved it to the side of the table without a word, the way one might move a glass that was in the way.

Alessandro's jaw tightened. Something flickered behind his eyes, a brief fracture in the composure he wore like armor.

"Yesterday you embarrassed me in front of my associates." His voice carried the clipped authority of a man accustomed to being obeyed. He loosened his tie as he spoke, pulling the silk knot free with one hand. "Not only did you make a scene, you ruined the entire evening. Next time, you will apologize to each of them individually for soiling their mood."

Elena looked up.

Their eyes met across the table. His gaze was hard, commanding, the gaze of an underboss who brokered in fear and expected submission as his birthright. Hers was something else entirely. Quiet. Emptied out. The kind of exhaustion that lived beneath the skin, in the marrow, in the place where a woman stored every wound she had ever swallowed whole.

Alessandro stopped talking. His mouth remained slightly open, the next reprimand dying on his tongue. He could not name the thing he saw in her eyes, but it unsettled him the way a locked door unsettles a man who has always held the key.

"I apologize that I forgot my place."

The words fell between them like a coin dropped into still water. Alessandro blinked. In three years of marriage, through every argument and every silence, Elena had never spoken those words. Not with that voice. Not with that terrible, glassy calm.

The screech of her chair against the marble floor filled the silence as she rose. She moved to the kitchen without waiting for his response and returned carrying a plate, a linen napkin, and polished silverware that she arranged before him with the practiced grace of a woman who had performed this ritual a thousand times.

She uncovered the dishes one by one. Ossobuco braised in a slow reduction of San Marzano tomatoes and bone marrow. Hand-rolled gnocchi in brown butter and sage. A bitter green salad dressed with aged vinegar and Calabrian oil. Every plate was something Alessandro loved. Every plate had been prepared by her hands alone.

Years ago, after the assassination attempt by a rival family, Alessandro had nearly died. The bullet had shredded his kidney, and Elena had given him one of her own. The transplant saved his life, but recovery had been a war of its own. The nutritionists brought in by the Leoni Family's personal physician, Dottore Giannini, could not solve the impossible equation of keeping Alessandro's diet both palatable and safe for his compromised system. Specialist after specialist had failed. So Elena had taken it upon herself. She sought out an old master, a retired chef from the old country who had once cooked for Sicilian nobility, and she learned. Traditional preparations. Ancestral recipes modified with surgical precision for a man with one borrowed kidney.

For three years, even when fever had her shivering so badly she could barely hold a knife, even when exhaustion pressed her to the floor like a hand on the back of her neck, she cooked every meal Alessandro ate. He would touch nothing else. He accepted this as his due, the way a king accepts tribute, never once asking what it cost her.

Alessandro watched her limp back to the table. His gaze dropped to her leg, to the wound from the night before, the place where broken glass had opened her skin while she knelt on the floor of Ginevra's celebration and no one had moved to help her. His expression shifted. Guilt crept across his features like a stain spreading through white cloth, followed closely by shame, though neither emotion stayed long enough to change anything.

They sat down together. The last lunch they would ever share as husband and wife, though only Elena knew it.

"Elena." His voice had softened. Not gentle. Alessandro Leoni did not do gentle. But the sharp edges had been filed down, the way a man sands the blade of a knife before sliding it back into its sheath. "I drank too much last night. Is your wound alright?"

She hummed. A small, noncommittal sound. He took it as permission to continue.

"There is no need to take what happened to heart. Once you apologize to Ginevra, everything returns to normal." He reached for the bread, tore a piece, dipped it into the braising liquid. "I know you were raised outside the Family. That old woman in the countryside, she did what she could, but certain manners were never instilled in you. You must understand that what I tell you is only for your benefit. I am trying to make you worthy of this name."

He said it without shame. Without hesitation. The way he had said it a hundred times before, each word a small incision designed to pare her down, to keep her grateful and desperate and small. For three years she had accepted these words as gospel. She had believed that she was the one who needed to change, to improve, to earn the right to stand beside him. That if she cooked well enough, smiled wide enough, bled quietly enough, he would one day look at her the way a husband should look at his wife.

Now she understood. Ginevra Castellano was the one who occupied the chambers of his heart. She always had been. And Elena, with her orphan's hands and her borrowed name and the scar on her side where a kidney used to be, had never once been in the running.

She picked up her fork and continued eating in silence.
