Chapter 1

I STARED AT the two faint lines on the pregnancy test, my heart pounding so loudly it felt like it was echoing in the small bathroom. Pregnant. The word replayed in my mind, a mixture of joy and fear swirling in my chest.

I had dreamed of this moment for years, but I knew Philip, my husband, didn’t share that dream. His stance on having kids had always been clear. I suddenly remembered a moment when I had asked him about it one evening while we were eating dinner.

“P-Philip? Can I ask you something?” I asked, a bit tense. I had never opened up about us having a child since I knew we weren’t ready for that. But this time, I was sure. I was ready, and I was hoping Philip shared the same idea.

“What is it?” Philip asked, his brows furrowed like he was annoyed about something. He had been like that since he got home earlier. Maybe something had happened at his company. He was probably stressed from work. After all, running the biggest wine company in New York wasn’t easy.

“Uhm… I was just thinking… what do you think about us finally having a… b-baby?” I finally mustered the courage to ask, nervous about his reaction.

He looked at me as if I had said something absurd. “Why are you suddenly bringing that up now? Don’t tell me you stopped taking your pills without informing me,” he said in a sarcastic tone, though his expression made it clear he was already annoyed.

I immediately shook my head. “O-Of course not…” I replied nervously. The last thing I wanted was to make him mad. “I just… asked randomly. It just popped into my mind.” I tried to smile to ease the tension that had suddenly formed in the air.

“Good. This… us… we’re fine. A baby would just complicate everything,” Philip said dismissively. “Don’t bring this up again. My answer will always be the same.”

“I-I know, but… I couldn’t help but wonder. You know, we’re getting older,” I said, despite the turmoil in my stomach.

“Do you think I don’t know that? We can live without a baby. Besides, what makes you think you’d be a good mom?”

That… stung. It hurt that he thought that way about me. Maybe he was right—I didn’t know much about being a mom. But I knew I could give our baby all the love and care they would ever need. I wasn’t perfect, but I was willing to learn how to be the best mom. If only he wanted it too.

That was my cue to shut my mouth. I didn’t have the courage to voice what was in my heart anymore.

Philip had always been serious about not having a child. But now… it has happened. I was terrified of how he would react when he found out.

I sighed, instinctively placing a hand on my stomach. It felt surreal. This tiny life growing inside me—unplanned but so deeply wanted.

My mind raced back to the night it must have happened. I’d forgotten to take my pill that one time. I told myself it was a small mistake, that it wouldn’t matter. But here I was, standing in the bathroom, staring at the undeniable proof of that slip.

“But I have to tell Philip. He has the right to know,” I murmured, staring at my reflection in the bathroom mirror.

Even if Philip didn’t like the idea of us having a baby, he was still the father of my child.

With trembling fingers, I picked up my phone and dialed Philip’s number. The dial tone felt endless before he finally answered.

“Hey,” Philip said casually, like he wasn’t expecting anything serious. “What made you call me? I’m in the middle of an important meeting,” he added.

“Philip, I…” My voice wavered, and I cleared my throat, trying to steady myself. “I need to tell you something.”

“What is it?” His tone was distracted, like he wasn’t fully paying attention. “Can’t it wait? I’m really busy right now.” His irritation was evident, making me bite my lower lip.

Before I could respond, a woman’s voice cut through the line.

“Drop the call if it’s just your wife,” she said, her voice sultry and teasing. “We were just getting started. Don’t keep me waiting, honey. Come here and kiss me…”

My heart stopped. Who is that… woman?

I wasn’t naïve. I knew something was wrong. My hands trembled, barely able to hold the phone. Tears began to form at the corners of my eyes.

“P-Philip?” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. I didn’t even know how I managed to say his name, my heart breaking with each passing second.

“I’ll call you later,” Philip said coldly.

There was a pause, and then the line went dead.

I stood there for what felt like hours, the phone still in my hand, my mind blank with shock. The woman’s voice echoed in my ears, and Philip’s silence after her words felt like a knife to my chest.

A thousand questions swirled in my head. Who was she? How long had this been going on? But above all, how could he do this to me… now, of all times? What about our baby?

Tears blurred my vision as I curled up on the bathroom floor, clutching my stomach protectively.

“It’s okay,” I whispered, my voice breaking. “It’s just you and me now, little one. We’re going to be okay.”
