Chapter 2

At the dinner table, Hailey made a deliberate show of picking up food for Chris, her every gesture a calculated display of familiarity and affection. As she recalled shared memories from the past, her voice was laced with nostalgia and her smiles were aimed directly at Chris, who seemed to bask in the attention. Her behavior was a clear attempt to remind everyone of their history and it only served to make me feel like an outsider in my own home.

Chris, initially casting nervous glances my way, seemed increasingly uneasy. It was as though he was waiting for a reaction from me, unsure how to handle the situation. His attempts to initiate conversation were hesitant and he kept glancing at me, as if hoping I would soften my stance.

"I'm full," I declared abruptly, just as Chris was about to speak. I slammed my bowl down on the table with a loud clatter, causing everyone to flinch.

Chris looked up, startled and a bit alarmed, his eyes widening in surprise. "What? Are you so fascinated by what you hear?" he asked, his voice tinged with confusion and defensiveness.

I turned to him with a forced smile, my eyes cold. "It’s not about being fascinated," I said, my voice clipped. "It's about observing how things have changed."

Chris seemed momentarily embarrassed, his cheeks reddening as he quickly shook his head, clearly uncomfortable with the escalating tension.

Before the situation could spiral further, Susan cleared her throat with exaggerated emphasis. "Yasmine, I have something to tell you," she said, her voice taking on an unusually soft and conciliatory tone. Her expression, which had always been stern and critical towards me, now held a semblance of gentle concern. It was clear that whatever she was about to say was intended to smooth over the discomfort.

"Go ahead, Mom," I said, maintaining my smile. Despite our strained relationship, I was determined to keep things civil for Chris’s sake.

"Well, you know Hailey has been studying abroad and just graduated with a degree from a prestigious business school," Susan began, her voice brimming with pride. "She’s a real talent—many large domestic companies are clamoring to hire her."

Her excitement grew with each sentence and she spoke with such fervor that I could almost see her enthusiasm spilling out. "I told her, with just one sentence, that she should turn down all those job offers and come work at my son’s company instead!" She spoke with a sort of triumph, her hands gesticulating wildly and I noticed her excitement even made her spit a little.

The realization hit me like a punch. My company, which had always been my pride and joy, was now being linked to Chris’s family dynamics. It was clear that Susan’s enthusiasm was not just about Hailey’s career, but about exerting her influence.

I couldn’t help but respond with a touch of sarcasm. "Mom, are you suggesting that you can just place people into positions at the company on a whim?" I asked, my smile never wavering but my tone sharp.

Susan’s face fell, her expression shifting from smug pride to startled discomfort. Her mouth opened and closed as if searching for words, but no sound came out. She had been caught in the act of boasting about her influence and the truth of her meddling was now exposed.

The room grew even more tense, the silence heavy with unspoken challenges and the weight of confrontation. Susan struggled to regain her composure, while Hailey looked on, her earlier smugness replaced by a nervous glance.

"Never mind, Mom, I was just joking," I said, my laughter coming out more strained than I intended. My body shook with the effort to seem lighthearted, but the humor was clearly lost on Susan. Her face twisted further into a scowl, clearly displeased with my response.

Turning my attention to Hailey, I continued with an edge of sarcasm, "Even though you’re just an outsider with no real connection to me, I have to give credit where it’s due. You really know how to win people over."

My gaze locked onto Hailey’s, my expression a mix of cold amusement and disdain. "For the sake of Susan’s wishes, I’ll begrudgingly approve your request to join my company."

My tone was intentionally haughty, making it clear that I was asserting my authority. Hailey’s face reddened with barely concealed anger, but she bit her lip and managed to keep her emotions in check, knowing that a public outburst would not be wise.

Inside, I felt a grim satisfaction. If Hailey wanted to play the charming, submissive guest, she would have to face my resistance. I wasn’t about to let her undermine me or my position in my own home.

Feeling the mounting tension and their nauseating display of affection, I decided to retreat upstairs. As I made my way up, their laughter and conversation grew louder, a backdrop of insincerity that I was eager to escape.

From above, I overheard Hailey speaking to Chris with a tone of feigned sweetness. "Chris, since you and Sister are back, let’s give you the bedroom," she said, her voice dripping with false affection as she tenderly pulled on Chris’s hand.

Chris looked visibly distressed, torn between his desire to placate Hailey and his awareness of the awkwardness of the situation. "No, no," he said, his voice wavering. "You’ve been living here for several days already. Are you getting used to it?"

He reached out to stroke Hailey’s hair gently, his voice softening as he spoke. "You’ve always been so shy and now that you’re finally accustomed to it, how could I possibly ask you to move?"

Hailey’s face lit up with a mixture of joy and smug satisfaction. She leaned closer to Chris, basking in his attention and the apparent validation of his words.

Unable to tolerate their insincerity any longer, I decided to make my presence known. "So you knew it was our wedding room, our bedroom?" I said sharply, my voice cutting through their conversation like a knife. "I thought you weren’t aware."

The suddenness of my remark made both Chris and Hailey startle as if they had been jolted awake. Their faces turned to me with a look of shock and discomfort. Chris’s hand was still in mid-air from where he had been touching Hailey’s hair and Hailey’s expression of satisfaction was replaced with surprise and awkwardness.

I stood at the top of the stairs, my demeanor composed but my eyes cold. I had successfully disrupted their little charade, making it clear that I was fully aware of their manipulative games. The atmosphere in the room shifted, leaving Chris and Hailey visibly unsettled and uncertain.

Chris’s face turned a deep shade of red and he looked at me with a mix of surprise and hesitation. "Yasmine, when did you get here?" he asked, his voice tinged with nervousness and confusion.

I chose to ignore his question, focusing instead on Hailey. My tone was dripping with sarcasm as I addressed her. "If you didn’t know that this was our bedroom, you’d probably think we were kicking you out of it."

Hailey’s face flushed with anger, not embarrassment. Her eyes narrowed and she stamped her foot in frustration. "Oh, Chris! Look at your wife—how does she speak to me like that?" Her voice was sharp, filled with indignation.

"Don’t I know I’ve made a mistake? I’m trying to make room for you and yet, you’re still treating me like this!" She pouted, her voice quivering with a mixture of hurt and resentment.

Her melodramatic display of grievance was almost laughable and I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. Did she really think this act was endearing or convincing?

As Chris started to speak, likely trying to mediate, I gave him a pointed look, signaling him to be quiet. He hesitated, clearly unsure of how to handle the situation.

"Do you know you’re wrong?" I asked, my voice cold and mocking. I let out a short, harsh laugh. "If you truly understood your mistake, you’d have the decency to leave my house."

My gaze was unwavering as I fixed Hailey with a chilling stare. I wanted her to understand that her presence and the pretense of remorse were both unwelcome and unacceptable.

Chris’s expression changed to one of distress and frustration. He whispered urgently, "Yasmine, you’re going too far!" His voice was low, but it carried a note of desperation.

I chuckled softly, finding his reaction amusing. "Going too far? Look at you, why are you so anxious?" I said, walking up to him and adjusting his shirt with a dismissive gesture, almost as if he were a child needing correction. "Don’t worry, I won’t make her move to another room."

I turned away from them, my tone final and dismissive. "Such a disgusting place—one in my house is more than enough. By the way, you’ll be sleeping in another room tonight. Don’t bother me."

I didn’t look back as I walked away, leaving my words hanging in the air. Chris stood there, frozen and embarrassed, not making any move to stop me. His silence confirmed his discomfort and resignation. If he had tried to follow me or plead for my forgiveness, I might have felt conflicted, but as it stood, I felt a grim satisfaction in having asserted my authority and drawn a clear line in the sand.
