The conference room was all glass and gray light. Midtown, thirty-second floor, the kind of building where the elevators smelled like ambition and dry-cleaning. I set my portfolio on the table with both hands and didn't let myself look at the skyline.

Two women sat across from me. Elena Voss and Dana Park, co-founders of Meridian Studio. Forties, minimal jewelry, the specific stillness of women who have already stopped needing to prove things. Elena had her hands folded on the table. Dana had a pen she wasn't using.

I talked for twenty-two minutes. The typography system. The color logic. The way the visual identity could hold both strength and softness without letting either one apologize for existing. I'd rebuilt the whole pitch in six evenings on my kitchen table, Blaire reading copy aloud beside me, the Meridian brief spread out like a map I was finally ready to follow.

When I finished, neither of them spoke for a moment.

Then Elena said: 'You shelved this for a year and a half. What changed?'

I considered the question. One second, maybe less.

'I stopped making space for things that weren't about me.'

Dana looked at Elena. Elena looked at me. Something passed between all three of us that didn't need a word.

'When can you start?' Dana said.

I wore the blazer. The one I'd packed into Caiden's box, then unpacked at the last second, pressing the fold back into place and hanging it on the door. It still had a ghost of his cologne on the collar. By the time I shook Elena's hand across the conference table, I couldn't smell it anymore.

Gerald called up at 4:17 in the afternoon.

'Miss Wheeler. Mr. Fisher is in the lobby. He has a coffee — looks like it's from that place on Fifty-Third you go to.'

I was standing at my kitchen window. Below, the street was doing its usual Thursday thing: a man arguing with a taxi, two women sharing an umbrella, a dog pulling hard toward a pretzel cart. The city, indifferent and ongoing.

'Gerald,' I said, 'please let him know I've already had my coffee this morning. And that I hope he has a good day.'

A pause. Gerald had been the doorman in this building for eleven years. He had watched me move in with three boxes and a secondhand lamp. He had held the elevator for me more times than I could count and never once asked personal questions, which was its own form of love.

'Of course, Miss Wheeler,' he said. There was something in his voice — not quite satisfaction, but close.

I set the phone down and went back to the Meridian contract spread across my kitchen table. The signature line was still blank. I picked up a pen.

My phone buzzed forty minutes later. Gerald again.

'He's gone. Left about eleven minutes after I relayed the message. Just so you know.'

'Thank you, Gerald.'

'Have a good evening, Miss Wheeler.'

Eleven minutes. I thought about that. Caiden in his pressed suit in the lobby of my building, holding a coffee that was getting cold, standing in the specific way he stood when he was deciding how to look like he wasn't waiting. Eleven minutes is a long time when no one is coming down.

I signed the contract. Took a photo of it. Sent it to Blaire with no caption.

Her response was immediate. Three fire emojis and then: *open the good wine.*

Sunday. Gray and quiet, the kind of morning that asks nothing of you.

Blaire had her laptop open on the coffee table, a legal pad beside it, two mugs of coffee going cold while she worked. I'd woken up to find her already at it, barefoot, hair pulled back, with the focused stillness of someone who had been thinking all week and was finally ready to show her work.

'Sit down,' she said, without looking up. 'And drink your coffee first.'

I sat. I drank.

She turned the laptop toward me.

It was clean. Organized with the kind of precision that felt like anger expressed as architecture. A folder structure, color-coded, timestamped. At the top: ARCHIVE — FINAL. Inside: six subfolders.

The Juliet DMs, all four accounts, screenshots with metadata visible. The public video, downloaded and saved. The Instagram likes — the one that had started it all, 2:17 a.m., moving backward through my life — screenshotted, dated, mapped against a timeline Blaire had built in a separate document. Caiden's letters. The voicemail I'd recorded in the stairwell — habit, reflex, the instinct of a woman who had learned young that memory alone doesn't hold up in court — clear enough that every word landed.

And then the last document. A timeline. Caiden's romantic gestures down the left side — the handmade lasagna, the lavender tea, the playlist titled *For D*, the Sunday in October we adopted Mochi — and on the right side, cross-referenced, Marcus Reid's confirmed dates. The first time Juliet texted him after two years of silence. The week the lasagna appeared on my kitchen table. The month the playlist was created.

I scrolled slowly. I didn't say anything for a while.

'Marcus sent the last of it Thursday,' Blaire said. 'He wasn't happy about it. But he sent it.'

'He's a decent person.'

'He is.' She wrapped both hands around her mug. 'The voicemail is the anchor. Everything else supports it. The DMs show she was already escalating before you'd done anything. The timeline shows the pattern — that it wasn't a moment of weakness. It was a system.'

I thought about the lasagna. The way Caiden had stood at my stove like a man who had always known this kitchen, moving with a familiarity I'd found so easy to mistake for intimacy. I'd watched him and thought: *this is a man who knows how to be home somewhere.*

He did. Just not with me.

'We're not using this yet,' Blaire said.

'I know.'

'But when we do —'

'Surgical.' I closed the laptop gently. 'Yeah.'

She looked at me for a moment. Then she reached over and refilled my coffee without asking, the way she'd been doing all week — quietly, without ceremony, like keeping me warm was simply something she had decided was her job.

Outside, the city went about its Sunday. Somewhere on the other side of Manhattan, a woman with a cream linen background was probably framing her next move. Somewhere else, a man in a pressed suit was probably rehearsing his next version of an apology.

I opened my sketchbook. Picked up my pen.

The archive sat on the coffee table between us. Patient. Waiting.

We were not done yet. But we were ready.
