After betrayed by my dearest brother, friend, and husband Chapter 1
I spent four hours arranging the flowers and finalizing the menu for our third wedding anniversary.
When I pushed open the double doors of the private dining room, laughter spilled into the hallway.
A woman in a cream silk blouse sat directly to the right of my husband, Elon, occupying the seat that was always reserved for me.
She turned her head. It was Betty Moore.
"Uliana!" Elon smiled warmly, wiping his mouth with a linen napkin. "You're finally here. Look who Charlie ran into in the lobby."
My brother, Charlie, waved a fork toward me. "Can you believe it? Betty just signed on as the senior director for Elon's new merger project. Small world, right?"
My closest friend, Tessa, sat across from them, pouring white wine into Betty's glass.
"What is going on here?" I asked, staying by the doorway. "Elon, tonight was supposed to be our private dinner."
"Don't be stiff," Elon said, gesturing toward the empty chair at the far end of the long table. "Betty just moved back to the city. We're old classmates. We're just catching up. Take a seat."
Betty offered a soft, apologetic smile. "I really hope I'm not intruding, Uliana. Elon insisted I join."
"You aren't intruding at all," Charlie cut in quickly. He signaled the server. "Bring another appetizer, but remember—no raw onions for Betty. Her stomach flares up instantly."
"And dressing on the side," Tessa added without missing a beat. "You still hate creamy dressings, right, Betts?"
"You actually remember?" Betty touched her chest, her eyes sparkling.
"Of course we do," Tessa laughed. "High school cafeteria rules still apply."
"I even had the pastry chef bake that spiced walnut cake you used to obsess over," Elon said, turning his entire body toward Betty. "They had to source the nuts from an artisanal bakery across town."
A cold weight dropped into my gut.
"Walnuts?" I stepped forward, gripping the back of the empty chair at the end of the table. "Elon, what did you just say?"
Elon glanced up, his brow furrowing slightly. "What's wrong with you tonight? You've been standing there scowling since you walked in."
"I'm severely allergic to tree nuts," I said. Every word felt like sandpaper against my throat. "Anaphylactic. A trace amount puts me in the emergency room."
Silence flickered across the room for half a second before Charlie groaned.
"Oh, come on, Uli. The cake isn't even on your plate yet."
"It's being served at this table," I answered, my eyes locked on my husband. "Elon, you ordered a dessert packed with the one thing that could kill me. On our anniversary."
Elon set his wine glass down with an irritated clatter. "The chef kept the kitchen clean, Uliana. You don't have to touch it. Just scrape the frosting off if you want a taste. It's just eating a crumb or two anyway, so don't be so delicate."
"Delicate?" I repeated.
The maid stepped into the room just then, carrying a silver platter. She set a rich, roasted-nut sponge cake directly in front of Betty, the scent of crushed walnuts instantly filling the space between us.
My fingers tightened around the wood until the joints turned white.
Three years of marriage. Twenty-five years of having Charlie as an older brother. Seven years of being Tessa's confidante.
Not one of them had remembered. Yet all three remembered Betty's minor aversion to raw onions.
A quiet sniffle broke the heavy air.
Betty dropped her head, her lower lip trembling. A glistening layer of tears welled in the corners of her eyes.
"I'm so sorry," Betty whispered, her voice cracking. "I had no idea today was your anniversary, Uliana. Elon just said it was a family gathering. If I knew, I never would have agreed to stay. Did I ruin everything? I should just leave."
She reached for her purse, her hands shaking with fragile distress.
"Betty, sit down," Charlie snapped, throwing a harsh glare in my direction. "You don't need to leave. Uliana is just throwing a tantrum like she always does when the spotlight isn't on her."
"Seriously, Uli," Tessa sighed, handing Betty a silk handkerchief. "She didn't know. Look how upset you've made her. Can't you be gracious for once?"
Elon didn't even look at me. He placed a steady hand over Betty's wrist to stop her from gathering her things. His voice softened to a register he hadn't used with me in months.
"Don't cry," Elon murmured to Betty. "You're my guest. You stay right here."
I stared at his hand resting over hers. He didn't pull away.
"I'm leaving," I said quietly.
I didn't scream. I didn't throw a glass. The sudden urge to fight simply evaporated, leaving behind a cold, hollow shell.
I picked up my clutch from the sideboard and turned toward the doors.
"Uliana, if you walk out that door right now, don't bother coming back tonight," Elon warned, his voice sharp and dismissive. "I'm sick of your childish drama."
I didn't stop. My hand reached for the polished brass handle.
Behind me, Betty let out a shaky, timid sigh that cut through the silence like a blade.
"Elon..." Betty called out, her tone dropping into an intimate, velvet murmur that carried across the room. "You didn't forget, did you? You used to love celebrating birthdays with me the most."
The dining room went dead still.
My fingers froze against the cold brass of the door.
