Chapter 1

I woke up with a smile on my face, the morning light filtering through our bedroom curtains. Today marked three years since I had become Mrs. Christina Hughes, and my heart fluttered with the same excitement I'd felt on our wedding day. Dante was still asleep beside me, his dark hair tousled against the pillow, his breathing deep and rhythmic.

Quietly, I slipped out of bed and padded to the kitchen. I wanted everything to be perfect for our anniversary. I prepared his favorite breakfast—blueberry pancakes with maple syrup and freshly brewed coffee. The dress he'd bought me for our first anniversary—a simple blue sundress that he said matched my eyes—hung in the bathroom where I'd placed it last night.

As I whisked the pancake batter, my mind wandered to the small white stick hidden in my purse. I'd taken the test yesterday, hands trembling as two pink lines appeared. After three years of hoping and trying, we were finally going to have a baby. I imagined Dante's face when I told him tonight during our dinner at La Mer, the restaurant where he'd proposed.

"This is going to be the best anniversary yet," I whispered to myself, touching my still-flat stomach.

After breakfast, Dante kissed me goodbye, promising to meet me for our dinner reservation. "I have a surprise for you later," he'd said with that smile that still made my heart skip a beat. Little did he know, my surprise would change our lives forever.

I spent the day getting ready, visiting the salon for a blowout and manicure. By mid-afternoon, I was practically buzzing with excitement. On impulse, I decided to surprise Dante at The Grand, the boutique hotel where he mentioned he had a meeting. I could steal him away early, maybe share a drink at the hotel bar before our dinner.

The hotel lobby was elegant, with marble floors and crystal chandeliers. I smoothed down my blue dress, suddenly feeling nervous like a girlfriend on a first date rather than a wife of three years. That's when I saw him.

Dante stood near the elevator, but he wasn't alone. Sadie Ryan, his childhood friend, was with him. Her face was turned up to his, tears streaming down her cheeks. My husband—my Dante—tenderly wiped them away with his thumb, his expression so intimate it made my stomach clench.

"It's okay," I heard him murmur. "I'm here for you, Sadie. Always."

I froze, unable to move as I watched him guide her toward the elevator, his hand resting on the small of her back in a gesture so familiar it made me sick. They hadn't noticed me standing there, partially hidden behind a large decorative plant.

My heart hammered against my ribs as I followed them, maintaining distance. The elevator numbers climbed to the fifth floor. I took the stairs, my legs shaking beneath me, telling myself there must be an explanation. Dante was a doctor; maybe Sadie was having a medical issue. Maybe this was innocent.

I found their room by following the sound of Sadie's voice down the hallway. The door wasn't fully closed—just a sliver of space remained, enough for me to see inside. What I saw shattered my world into a thousand pieces.

Sadie sat on the bed in nothing but a silk slip, her blouse discarded on the floor. Dante sat beside her, stroking her hair as she leaned against his chest. The intimacy between them was unmistakable.

"You always know exactly what I need," she purred, running her hand up his arm.

I pushed the door open, the sound making them both turn. Dante's face drained of color.

"Christina," he stammered, jumping to his feet. "This isn't—I can explain—"

"Explain what?" My voice sounded foreign to my own ears. "How you're spending our anniversary in a hotel room with her?"

"He's helping me with my intimacy issues," Sadie said, not bothering to cover herself. Her lips curved into a smirk. "We've been having therapy sessions for months now."

"Therapy?" I repeated, the word bitter on my tongue.

"Christina, please," Dante pleaded. "Sadie has been struggling—"

"Do your therapy sessions include sharing our private videos with her?" I demanded, watching his expression change from panic to guilt. "Because she just mentioned details about us that only someone who'd seen them would know."

Sadie's smirk widened. "He has such a distinctive birthmark on his lower back, doesn't he? And you make the cutest little sounds when he—"

"Enough!" Dante shouted, but the damage was done.

I stood there, clutching my purse where the positive pregnancy test still lay hidden, as my entire world collapsed around me.
