Chapter 2

Holly POV

The taxi meter's clicking was a frantic heartbeat. Each jump in fare tightened a knot in my chest. The cab left Manhattan behind, crossing a bridge into the lush, manicured world of Long Island's Gold Coast. The houses grew larger, hidden behind towering hedges and imposing stone walls.

The driver slowed, pulling up to a pair of massive, wrought-iron gates. A stylized letter 'S' was woven into the metalwork. I gave my name to a disembodied voice from an intercom. The gates swung inward without a sound.

A long, gravel driveway crunched under the tires.

At the end of it sat a sprawling structure of glass, steel, and dark stone, perched on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic. It wasn't a house. It was a statement.

A man in a perfectly tailored gray suit stood waiting at the entrance. Trim, with sharp features and an even sharper gaze that took in my simple dress and worn handbag in a single, swift appraisal.

"Miss Vaughn," he said, his voice as crisp as his suit. "I am Mr. Foster, the estate manager."

He led me inside. The foyer was vast and minimalist, dominated by a floating staircase and a single, enormous abstract painting. The silence was absolute.

"Mr. Sharpe is concluding a call," Mr. Foster explained. "He asked you to wait in the playroom. With Noah."

The playroom was as large as my entire apartment. Sunlight streamed through a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows. It was filled with beautiful, educational toys—German wooden blocks, intricate building sets, a library of classic children's books.

The room was eerily quiet.

A small boy, maybe five years old, sat on a plush white rug in the center of the room, his back to them. He was building a tower with a complex set of architectural blocks. He didn't flinch or turn at their entrance.

"That is Noah Sharpe," Mr. Foster said, his voice dropping to a near whisper.

I watched the boy's small, determined hands. He was trying to place a final, delicate piece on top of his structure. I noticed the tower was perfectly symmetrical—each block placed with a precision that was almost ritualistic. That level of rigid order was a textbook self-regulation mechanism. I'd read about it in clinical literature, but seeing it in a five-year-old was something else entirely.

"Noah... he doesn't speak," Mr. Foster added. The words landed like stones in the quiet room. "Not since his mother left a year ago. We've had a dozen specialists. None lasted more than a week."

The boy's shoulders tensed as the top block wobbled.

It fell.

A year. An entire year of silence.

Mr. Foster excused himself, leaving me alone with the child.

I didn't approach him. I walked to a bookshelf, selected a different set of building blocks, and sat down on the floor some distance away.

I watched him out of the corner of my eye. He was trying again with his tower, his small body rigid with frustration. Each time, the top block fell. He never made a sound. No cry of anger, no whimper of defeat.

Finally, the whole tower came crashing down with a soft clatter of wood on wool. Noah's shoulders slumped.

I didn't say, "It's okay."

I didn't say, "Let me help."

Instead, I began to build with my own blocks. I mimicked his design, creating a similar tower. But near the top, I deliberately left a single, obvious gap—a foundational piece missing that made it impossible to complete.

I sighed, a small, theatrical sound of frustration, and pushed the unfinished tower away slightly. Then I picked up a picture book and began to read to myself.

I waited.

One minute.

Two.

I saw movement. Noah had gotten to his feet. He walked slowly, hesitantly, across the vast expanse of the rug. He stopped in front of my flawed tower. His small hand reached out, picked up the correct block from the pile beside me, and slotted it perfectly into the gap.

He looked up at me then.

It was the first time their eyes had met. His were the color of a deep sea, wary and guarded, but with a flicker of something else.

Curiosity.

I gave him a small, gentle smile. I didn't speak. I just held his gaze for a second before returning to my book.

He didn't leave. He sat down near me, not too close, and began to build with my set of blocks.

A shadow fell across the doorway. Mr. Foster stood there, his expression frozen. He stared at Noah, sitting calmly near a stranger for the first time in a year. He lifted a hand to his earpiece and murmured something I couldn't hear.

Noah seemed to sense the intrusion. He looked at me, then quickly, almost secretively, pressed one of the warm wooden blocks into my hand.

A gift.

A secret.

I closed my fingers around the smooth wood.

Mr. Foster stepped fully into the room. "Miss Vaughn." His voice held a new note. Respect. "Mr. Sharpe will see you now."
